Abstract

The increase in antibiotic resistance is very fast throughout the world, this is a problem because it threatens human health globally. The increase in antibiotic resistance is due to overprescribing of antibiotics, as well as poor infection prevention and control. The use of traditional medicine can be used as an alternative treatment in overcoming health problems, prevention, and healing. Traditional medicine is considered safer than synthetic medicine, one of the plants that has antibacterial benefits is turmeric rhizome (Curcuma domestica Val). Turmeric rhizome has an antibacterial effect against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity and active compounds contained in turmeric rhizome extract that can produce an antibacterial effect. The type of research used is descriptive using the Literature Review method by collecting various sources from 8 research journals that have been published and come from the internet. Turmeric rhizome extract is known to contain curcumin, alkaloids, flavonoids, essential oils, phenols, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids compounds that have antibacterial properties. The results of the literature review of the antibacterial activity test of turmeric rhizome extract showed that the antibacterial activity was classified as moderate to very strong against Escherichia coli (9 mm), Pseudomonas aeroginosa (7,8 mm), Bacillus cereus (11,1 mm), Salmonella typhi (12.1 mm), Staphylococcus aereus (10 mm), and Propionibacterium acnes (20.8 mm), while Bacillus subtilis (1.03 mm) was classified as weak.

Abstract

Abstract

Basil leaves  (Ocimum sanctum L.) and honey contain flavonoids and polyphenol compounds such as methyl eugenol, which are known to have antioxidant activity. Liquid soap is a form of pharmaceutical product that is often used to cleanse the body and provide additional protection to the skin. Objective: The aim of this study was to obtain the best physical formulation of a liquid soap combination of basil leaf extract and honey and its antioxidant activity. Method: Liquid soap preparations were made by adding basil leaf extract with various concentrations of 2g (FI), 4g (FII) and 8g (FIII) and honey, namely 5g (FI), 5g (FII) and 5g (FIII). Evaluation of liquid soap preparations included organoleptic, pH, and homogenity, as well as antioxidant activity test using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method with a wavelength of 516 nm. Results: The results showed that Formula III (FIII) had the best results, namely organoleptic milk chocolate color, pH preparation (9.71-9.89), homogeneous preparation, stable preparation in storage for 12 days and showed the best IC50 value of 118.39 ppm. Conclusion: In conclusion, the combination of basil leaf extract and honey can be formulated as a liquid soap preparation with a concentration of 8g basil leaf extract and 5g honey in formula III (FIII) showing the effectiveness as the best formulation.
