Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of studying characterization in novels as a means of understanding human values and character education relevant to social reality. Tere Liye's novel "Moga Bunda Disayang Allah" presents characters with complex characters that reflect empathy, compassion, and struggles facing limitations and social stigma. This study aims to comprehensively describe the characterization contained in the novel. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method with a structural literary analysis approach, specifically Nurgiyantoro's characterization theory. The research data, consisting of narrative excerpts and dialogues depicting the characters' characters, were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. Then, they were analyzed based on the categories of main and supporting characters, protagonist and antagonist, simple and round characters, static and developing characters, and typical and neutral characters. The results show that this novel displays diverse and dynamic characterization, with most of the characters experiencing significant character development and playing a crucial role in conveying moral values. The implications of this research are expected to enrich the study of Indonesian literature and be used as an alternative teaching material in character education-based literature learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the inner conflict of the main character in the novel Efek Halo by Fransisca Intan using a literary psychology approach. The focus of this research is to analyze the forms of inner conflict experienced by the main character, Andra, based on Kurt Lewin’s field theory. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive analysis technique. The data consist of excerpts from the novel that reflect the main character’s inner conflicts. Data collection techniques include library research and note-taking, while data analysis is conducted by identifying, classifying, and interpreting the data according to Kurt Lewin’s categories of conflict, namely approach–approach, avoidance–avoidance, and approach–avoidance conflicts. The results show that the inner conflict experienced by Andra is dominated by approach–avoidance conflict, a condition in which a single object simultaneously generates both attraction and rejection within the character. In addition, avoidance–avoidance conflict is also found in several events, where the character is faced with two equally undesirable choices that create psychological pressure. Meanwhile, approach–approach conflict is not found in the dynamics of the main character’s inner life. The dominance of approach–avoidance conflict indicates a strong sense of ambivalence within Andra, influenced by past trauma and ongoing emotional pressure, which ultimately affects psychological instability and difficulty in achieving self-integration.

Abstract

This study aims to represent female characters in the short story anthology "Kitab Kawin" by Laksmi Pamuntjak. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a Roland Barthes semiotic approach. The research data consists of quotations containing representations of injustice towards female characters. Data collection was carried out through reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was carried out by identifying signifiers, signifieds, denotations, connotations, and myths. The results of the study indicate that there are five forms of injustice towards female characters: marginalization, subordination, stereotypes, double workload, and violence. Marginalization is seen through restrictions on access to education and opportunities for self-development. Subordination is shown through women's limitations in making life choices. Stereotypes are evident in labeling women as weak, emotional, and bound by certain beauty standards. The double workload is seen when women must simultaneously carry out domestic and public roles. Meanwhile, violence is represented through physical and psychological actions experienced by female characters. The research findings indicate that patriarchal culture remains a major factor in injustice towards women in social and family life.
