Abstract

The synthesis of ester galactose fatty acid from methyl ester of arabica coffee seed oil (Coffea arabica) and galactose acetate with a toxic solvent-free synthesis process has been performed. Methyl ester oil of coffee beans is synthesized from coffee seed oil that has been macerated for 3 days with oil content of 17% and the result of methyl ester synthesis of coffee seed oil has a yield percentage of 87.93% with methanol reaction medium with 1% H2SO4 catalyst. Galactose acetate was synthesized from galactose and anhydrous acetic acid on a 1: 1 ratio resulting in galactose acetate with a yield percentage of 91.29%. The synthesis of fatty acid galactose ester from methyl ester coffee seed oil and galactose acetate was synthesized with a 1: 1 mole ratio using a 1 M M NaHCO3 catalyst with a temperature of 80-100 ºC for 6 hours yielding galactosil ester of fatty acid coffee seed oil. FTIR analysis showed that ester group formed from coffee seed oil methyl ester at wave number 1745,58 cm-1. FTIR analysis of galactosil acetate showed the presence of ester group formed from galactose at wave number 1728,22 cm-1. FTIR analysis of galactose oil seed oil ester showed the presence of ester group at wave number 1743,65 cm-1 and group (CH2)n at wave number 721,38 cm-1 with value of HLB obtained 3,494. Keywords: Coffee bean oil, galactose acetate, interesterification, fatty acid ester galactose

Abstract

Ornamental plants are one of the resources that have the potential to be developed on a large scale due to high public interest. The dollar leaf plant is one of the most common ornamental plants. The leaves of the dollar plant are commonly used in traditional medicine. The objective of this research was to determine the antioxidant properties by means of the 2,2 diphenyl -1-picryhidrazil (DPPH) method from the methanolic extract of dollar leaf (Ficus pumila L.). Based on the results of phytochemical tests, the methanol extract is known to contain alkaloids and steroids. The dollar leaf methanolic extract showed antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 387.753 mg/mL. From the antioxidant activity test results, dollar leaf methanol extract has relatively weak antioxidant power. Keywords: dollar leaf, antioxidant, 2,2 diphenyl -1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) method, extract

Abstract

Phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity from methanol extract of Dollar leaves (Ficus pumila L.) against Streptococcus mutans and Salmonella typhi bacteria has been done. The extraction was done by maceration extraction using methanol. Phytochemical test showed Ficus pumila L. contains secondary metabolites including alkaloids and steroids. Antibacterial activity test using diffusion methode of agar by well and disc indicate the presence of antibacterial activity (same MIC among concentration 0-0.625%) againts Streptococcus mutans and Salmonella typhi bacteria. The diameter range againts Streptococcus mutans and Salmonella typhi bacteria by well including with 13.5 mm (strong antibacterial activities) dan 16.67 mm (strong antibacterial activities) while by paper disc including with 15.66 mm (strong antibacterial activities) dan 16.3 mm (strong antibacterial activities). Keywords: Phytochemical, Antibactery, Dollar Leaves (Ficus pumila L.), Agar Diffusion

Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a fruit-shaped vegetable that has the characteristics of being easily damaged. Tomato plants before, during and after harvest can be damaged quickly if the handling is not done properly, resulting in a decrease in quality. It is necessary to improve the quality and storage time of tomatoes, by using one type of coating, namely edible coating which has a function to improve the quality and storage time of tomatoes. Edible coating is a type of thin layer that is environmentally friendly and safe for consumption, which functions to maintain the quality of tomatoes from decay for a certain time. The study was conducted on edible coating research based on chitosan, pectin, starch, and carrageenan. The purpose of this article review is to compare the results of edible coatings from chitosan, pectin, starch, and carrageenan on the quality and storage time of tomatoes. The method used is the literature review method. The results showed that edible coating from cassava starch where tomatoes coated with edible coating with starch made from cassava was able to maintain the quality of tomatoes when stored until the 15th day. Chitosan showed chitosan coating with a concentration of 50 ppm was the best level for storage of tomatoes for 7 days of observation. Grapefruit peel pectin showed the best treatment was found in 3% pectin which was effective for 14 days with a weight of 0.063%. Carrageenan shows that 1.5% carrageenan edible coating stored at room temperature can extend the shelf life of tomatoes from 6 days to 10 days. Keywords: edible coating, carrageenan, chitosan, starch, pectin, tomato

Abstract

Cultivation of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is mushrooming in Indonesia recently because of its benefits, including the BSF larvae is rich in protein and helps reduce waste pollution. One of the byproducts of this cultivation is the pupal exuviae which is still not utilized properly. Pupal exuviae of black soldier fly contain chitin and can be processed into chitosan. The purpose of this article is to review the results of research on the synthesis of chitosan based on pupal exuviae of black soldier fly from various articles. The method used in this research is the literature review method. The results of the literature review showed that pupal exuviae of black soldier fly content of around 12-30% due to the extraction method used. The structure of chitin and chitosan were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The characterization results showed that the physical characteristics of BSF chitin were α-chitin. The crystal index values of chitin is 52.8%, while chitosan is 55.4%. The surface morphology of chitin and chitosan is nanofiber structures. Based on the overall reviews, it can be concluded that pupal exuviae BSF can be an alternative source of chitin and processed into chitosan which is useful for various technological purposes. Keywords: Hermetia illucens, chitin, chitosan, pupal exuviae BSF
