Abstract

This study aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between Islamic financial development, economic growth, and CO2 emissions with Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) approach in Indonesia over the 2000-2018 period. This study employs the Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach and the Error Correction Mechanism (ECM) to examine the existence of long-run and short-run relationship between variables. From the results of the model, we do not find any support for the existence of the EKC for Indonesia. Moreover, the results present that there is no dynamic relationship in the short run among growth, Islamic finance development and CO2 emission. Long-run findings suggest that CO2 emission from transport; other sectors, excluding residential buildings and commercial and public services; and residential buildings and commercial and public services sector are significantly associated to the Islamic finance development in Indonesia. The findings of this study shows that Islamic finance development can help the country to adjust its CO2 emissions and play its role in protecting the environment by encouraging environmental-friendly and energy-efficient projects. A strong and efficient financial sector would be helpful in facilitating the investment process by advancing loans for business in condition with curbing CO2 emissions.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the distribution of the zakat policy of Umar bin Khattab and to relevance it with the condition of the pandemic of COVID-19 in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with content analysis and library research techniques. The result showed that Rasulullah SAW has confirmed to those who he made as zakat takers to distribute zakat assets taken from the rich to the poor, not returned and stored into the state treasury, which is then allowed to distribute zakat out of the area where zakat is collected due to certain factors which the priest or leader deems emergency, such as a disaster and a drought that has caused local residents to have difficulty getting supplies of much-needed staples and drinks. So it can be concluded that: (1) among the forms of Umar bin Khattab’s zakat distribution policy are: (a) distributing zakat outside the area where the zakat is collected, (b) paying great attention to illat in determining mustahik, (c) setting priorities distributing zakat and alms to the poor; (2) various policies of Umar bin Khattab have strong relevance to the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Abstract

This article deals with the public finance from the perspective of Islamic law according to al-Māwardī in his al-Aḥkām al-Sulṭānīyah wa al-Walāyāt al-Dīnīyah, particularly in the government expenditure sector and supervision of public finance. This article tries to analyze opportunities and challenges in aplying the concept of public finance from Islamic perspective. Using library research method with multidisciplinary approaches, namely: legal, philosophical and sociological, this article reveals some findings. Fisrt, the public finance according to al-Māwardī is divided into two parts, namely the limited expenditure and unlimited expenditure. A limited government expenditure includes the expenditure from the source of zakat, ghanīmah and fay’, while unlimited expenditures are allocated to fund the government activities, such as routine, civil and military, development, subsidies and social welfare. Second, the supervision of the public finances, according to al-Māwardī is covered in the h}isbah system, namely the amar makruf system that involves two parties, independent institutions created by the government and society. Third, the opportunity to enforce the financial concept based on Islamic law is open, because Islamic law has existed and become part of the source of positive or national law, and supported by the character of Islamic law itself which is fair or balanced between material (worldly) and spiritual interests and is dynamic. Fourth, there are challenges for the implementation of Islamic law in the field of public finance, such as the poor understanding of society to the teachings of Islam, the lack of religious norms in statutory products, weakness in the unity of Muslims, and the weak poor political will.

Abstract

The recent studies about the role of Islamic philanthropy in addressing socio-economic problems have been growing and confirming its significant role in overcoming the problem. This is in line with the existence of regulations that support the effectiveness of its role in poverty reduction in Indonesia, such as Law No. 23 of 2011 on Zakat Management and Law No. 41 of 2004 on Waqf. This study has two objectives. First, to analyze the impact of Islamic philanthropy on poverty reduction as the socio-economic problems in Indonesia in the short and long run. Second, to analyze the effectiveness of integrated Islamic commercial and social-economic or finance to address the poverty compared to unintegrated one. This study used Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach to analyze annual data for the period of 2002-2019 while investigating the long and short-run relationships among variables. It found that Islamic philanthropy reduces poverty both in the short and long run, particularly in the integration of Islamic social and commercial finance in a single model. The government should therefore include Islamic philanthropy or other Islamic social finances as a fundamental strategy for building financial stability and sustainable development.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the influence and correlation of interest rates as one form of the implementation of usury practices on inflation and poverty in Indonesia. This study uses secondary data from the publication of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and Bank Indonesia for the period 2005-2018. This study uses Simple Linear Regression Analysis Techniques and Pearson Correlation Techniques. The results showed that interest rates as one form of the implementation of usury practices had an effect and had a positive and significant correlation to inflation in Indonesia. The practice of ribawi actually will bring a negative impact on the economy of the people in Indonesia in the form of an increase in the level of inflation in society. Measures of monetary policy intervention in maintaining price stability and inflation in society have not shown a positive impact. Also, the results of the study showed that interest rate policy also had a positive influence and correlation on the increase in the poverty depth index. That is, when interest rates are set to rise, the poverty depth index in the community also tends to go up or get worse. The findings of this study reinforce the legitimacy of the word of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala in the Qur'an and the Hadith related to the prohibition of usury practices that can lead to injustice, wrongdoing, and economic destruction of the people.
