Abstract

Abstract. This research aims are to identify the uses of gerunds found in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes and to describe their application in teaching reading. It belongs to qualitative research. The researchers used a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle entitled The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes as the data source. The researchers then identified the sentences containing gerund, classified the gerund found in the short story based on its use, counted the percentage of the gerunds, discussed the finding of the analysis, applied the result of finding in teaching reading, and drew conclusion and suggestion. In conclusion, there are 2 gerunds as subject (0.71%), 13 gerunds as direct object (4.59%), and 268 gerunds as object of preposition (94.70%) and they can be applied in teaching reading for the twelfth-grade students of Language Program of senior high school.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the students‘ reading achievement and to find out the effectiveness of using story face in teaching reading narrative text. This research is quantitative using quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling technique. The population was tenth grade students and the sample was the students of X TKR 2 consist of 37 students as experimental group and X TKR 13 consist of 33 students as control group. The technique of collecting data are making instrument, expert judgment and conducting pre-test, treatment and post-test. The pre-test mean score in experimental class was 70.92 and control class was 70.55. Meanwhile, the post-test mean score in experimental class was 68.54 and control class was 67.76. It was obtained that z-value was 0.133 and the z-table was 1.96 for alpha (α) 5%. The z-value was lower than z-table (0.133<1.96) It means that Ha was rejected and Ho was accepted. Therefore, the researcher concludes that story face was ineffective in teaching reading narrative text at the tenth grade students of SMK TKMT Kebume in the academic year of 2019/2020.

Abstract

The research's goals are to compare speaking achievement between extrovert and introvert personalities, and to see if there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between extrovert and introvert personality on the tenth grade at Senior High School 1 Pejagoan in the academic year 2020/2021. This study is classified as quantitative research with a non-experimental design. The population of this study is the tenth-grade students of SMA N 1 Pejagoan in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used a purposive selection strategy to select 60 students as her sample. The data was collected using a questionnaire, and the teacher provided the researchers with a copy of the student's speaking achievement as a document. There are 24 Yes/No questions in the form. To answer the issue and hypothesis statements, descriptive and inferential analysis techniques are used to analyze the data. The results of this study demonstrate that extrovert students' speaking achievement is in the "good" category, with a mean of 79.34, while introvert students' speaking achievement is also in the "good" category, with a mean of 77.50. Extroverts have higher English speaking scores at Senior High School 1 Pejagoan of the tenth grade. The result of hypothesis testing showed that the z-value (2526) computation result is higher than the ztable (1.96). Because Sig (2- tailed) is less than 0.05 (0.0070.05), Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Furthermore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in speaking achievement between extrovert and introvert students in the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Pejagoan in the academic year 2020/2021.

Abstract

This research deals with the types and meaning of abbreviation found in the Jakarta Post’s articles published in January 2021 and its application in teaching vocabulary. The aims of this research are to identify the classifications of the type abbreviation found in the Jakarta Post’s articles and to describe the application of abbreviation found in the Jakarta Post’s articles in teaching vocabulary. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. In this research, the data source is taken from the Jakarta Post’s articles. In analyzing the data, the researcher was identified the abbreviation, classifying the data into types of abbreviation, giving code of each data, counting the data, applied the result of the analysis to teach vocabulary, and draw conclusion and suggestion. The result this study shows that there are 25 initialisms which contains 45%, 8 of unit abbreviation (15%), 1 of unit of measurement (2%), 5 of acronym (9%), 16 of contractions (29%), 0 suspensions (0%). This research can be applied in teaching vocabulary for the twelfth-grade students of senior high school.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to reveal student’s personality, the students’ speaking ability, dan to find out if there is any specific influence of student’s personality (extrovert introvert) on their speaking ability in English Education Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo. This research was quantitative research. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and documentation. Data collection techniques used questionnaire and documentation. Data analysis used descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. This study shows that (1) the dominant students’ personality was in extrovert category with the means score = 84.47. (2) The students' speaking ability was in good category with the means score = 77.55 at the interval of 70 - 79. (3) There was positive and significant influence of students’ personality on speaking ability with the value of regression analysis was 0.486 and the significant level score 0.000 was lower than 0.05. The regression model (students’ personality) was able to be explained its influence on speaking ability by 22.22%, while the influence of 77.78% is explained by other factors that are not used in this regression model.
