Abstract

The current study deals with the Power Relations between non-native English teachers and their students in the classroom. The objectives of the study is to describe the Power Relations between non-native English teachers and their students in the classroom. The data are in the form of utterances showing Power Relations which are taken from nine senior high schools in Purworejo. The researcher used the critical discourse analysis to analyze the data. The research results are as the follows: (1) in term of message units performance, non-native English teachers were more powerful than their students; (2) in five senior high schools non-native English teachers and their students performed turn distribution equally; (3) in performing the initiation, non-native English teachers are more powerful than their students; (4) the initiation of discussion topic was fully done by non-native English teachers; (5) non-native English teachers and their students had equal right to response; (6) the determination of turn-taking activities was mostly performed by non-native English teachers. In conclusion, non-native English teachers iunder the study were more powerful than their students in the classroom. It was much influenced by Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Anak berkebutuhan khusus (ABK) merupakan anak yang memiliki keunikan pada jenis dan karakter tertentu. Anak-anak ABK yang kehilangan salah satu indra tubuhnya akan menggunakan sisa indra yang ada, hal ini menyebabkan terganggunya fungsi penerimaan informasi sebagai kebutuhan pengetahuannya. Mereka memerlukan perhatian khusus untuk hidup seperti anak-anak normal lainnya seperti pemenuhan kebutuhan informasi untuk mendapatkan penghidupan yang layak. Kehidupan yang layak salah satunya pemenuhan pendidikan agar anak-anak ABK dapat menikmati pendidikan yang sama dengan anak normal lainnya sesuai dengan kebutuhannya. Oleh karena itu, untuk memenuhi kebutuhan anak berkebutuhan khusus di SLB terpadu Muhammadiyah Purworejo, dikembangkan media pembelajaran smart puzzle map, sebuah media pembelajaran peta cerdas dalam bentuk puzzle untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan geospasial. Pembuatan media pembelajaran menggunakan model pengembangan ADDIE yang dimulai dari proses analisis kebutuhan, tahap desain, tahap pengembangan, tahap implementasi, dan tahap evaluasi. Media yang dihasilkan menghasilkan kemampuan kognitif sebesar 78,3 %, kemampuan afektif sebesar 80%, dan kemampuan psikomotorik sebesar 86,25%. Adanya 3 kemampuan ini, siswa paling tidak dapat menunjukkan letak kecamatan siswa tinggal beserta batas-batas kecamatannya.

Abstract

In an effort to facilitate the Kebumen Regency Vocational High School English teachers regarding the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, community service is carried out by the English Education Study Program team. The objectives of the community service, i.e.: (1) explaining the concept of project-based learning, learning steps, benefits of PjBL and providing examples of its application in English subjects; (2) describing ways to develop and utilize interesting written text-based materials to design English learning; (3) Providing an explanation of concrete steps for solving learning problems in the classroom through classroom action research (CAR) and other classroom research as an effort to increase teacher professional competence. The service partner is a SMK English teacher in the Kebumen Regency MGMP group which was held at Kebumen State Vocational School 2 on Saturday, March 11 2023. The service activity is held face to face. The results of this activity can be described as follows: (1) participants are able to understand the concept of project-based learning, learning steps, PjBL benefits and examples of application in English subjects; (2 participants were able to develop and utilize interesting written text-based materials to design English learning; (3) participants were able to solve learning problems in class through classroom action research (CAR) and other classroom research.. Abstract

The objectives of the community service that will be carried out by the English Language Education Study Program service team include: (1) Providing an explanation regarding the form of the final assignment as a substitute for the student's thesis; (2) Provide an explanation of how to compose a scientific article as a substitute for a student's thesis; (3) Provide an explanation of how to publish scientific articles as a substitute for student theses. The service partners are students and lecturers of English Language Education and English Literature, Faculty of Languages and Arts, UNSIQ, Wonosobo. The community service was carried out on May 29 2024 in Room A5 FBS UNSIQ, which was attended by 41 participants. The results of this activity can be described one by one as follows: (1) Participants are able to understand the policy regarding writing final assignments as one of the requirements for undergraduate graduation; (2) Participants are able to understand the technicalities of writing scientific papers which include the elements which include Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (AIMRAD; (3) participants are able to understand the technical prerequisites for publishing scientific articles in journals and the stages. Bearing in mind the target of graduates must be able to publish articles in accredited national journals, especially Sinta 2. For those who will replace their final thesis assignment, students are expected to read as many references to accredited scientific journal articles as possible on topics they are interested in so that students are able to find research gaps as a guide in their research as material for write scientific articles

Abstract

This research aimed to get the three aspect of discourse analysis: contextual, grammatical and lexical aspect of the song lyric entitled Boulevard. In this study, the researcher would like to discuss the song lyric using qualitative approach. After analyzing it, the researcher found that the lyric was about a sad story of a heartbroken man and hoping to get a happy life with his lover if he got another chance. In the side of grammatical and lexical analysis give a cohession and coherence in the song lyric. The result of the grammatical and lexical aspect gives a depiction of cohesion and coherence of the song discourse of “Boulevard”. It can be seen that there are seven forms of first singular personal pronoun of “I”, nine forms of second plural personal pronoun of “you”, and three form of first plural personal pronoun of “we”. Though, it is difficult to find lexical aspect of this song discourse in the song lyric “Boulevard, there are collocation and equivalency aspect in it. They are “My love” and “lovers”, “happy forever” and “love together” as colocation aspect. Whereas “let me know” and “tell me”, “go” and “left” as the equivalency aspect.

Abstract

The purpose of this research aims to determine the student’s reading habits of Jakarta Post, their linguistic features of comprehension focusing on words and morphemes, and the impact of these habits on their linguistic features of comprehension focusing on words and morphemes. A mixed method was used in this research. The statistical population of this study was 45 students from the third semester of English language education. The sample of this research class B was 20 students.The result of the research revealed that the mean scores of pre-tests was 71.95, while the mean scores of post-tests was 83. The result of the two-sided significance value is 0.000. Compared to the significance level of 5% (0.05), the statistic shows that the two-fold significance level is lower than the significance level of 5% (0.00 < 0.05). In addition, the results of the interview also showed that students had a good answer about reading habit of Jakarta Post. This study’s result indicated that reading habit of Jakarta Post has a significant effect. It positively impacts students’ linguistic features comprehension, focusing on word & morpheme.

Abstract

English is a global language for communication, and it's essential to develop four critical skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In writing, using the right words and sentence structure is crucial. This research analyzed the sentence structures in Stephen Crane's short story A Dark Brown Dog. The study employs a descriptive and qualitative approach to explore the roles of different sentence types within the narrative and their potential applications in writing instruction. The data for this analysis was derived from Stephen Crane's short story A Dark Brown Dog. The results showed that there are four types of sentences in the story. Out of 144 sentences, 69 are simple (47.22%), 11 are compound (7.64%), 51 are complex (35.41%), and 14 are compound-complex (9.72%). These sentence types can help teach writing.

Abstract

This research seeks to identify the forms of figurative language present in Rachael Lippincott’s novel Five Feet Apart and to explain the meanings of the identified figurative language. This research employed a qualitative methodology. The primary instrument was the researcher herself. The researcher employed the content analysis methodology. The study indicates that five forms of figurative language exist out of twelve, according to Perrine’s theory. The figures of speech include personification, metaphor, exaggeration, metonymy, and simile. Personification constitutes the predominant form of figurative language, appearing in 27 of the 69 phrases. The preval___ent sort of figurative language in the novel is personification, which plays a crucial role in expressing the meanings of various figurative expressions. The novel explores the emotions (fear, anxiety, pain, anger, joy) experienced by the characters in the novel.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve the competence of teachers in designing child-friendly scientific learning activities through child-friendly scientific learning training activities at SDN 1 Temulus, Mejobo District, Kudus Regency, 2018/2019 academic year. The research was carried out in 2 cycles, each cycle of four stages, namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. There has been an increase in teacher competence in designing child-friendly school learning at SDN 1 Temulus. After being given action in the form of child-friendly scientific learning training activities, teacher competence increased in cycle I to 8 teachers (80%) in the good category and 2 teachers (20%) in the sufficient category, and in cycle II to 10 teachers (100%) in good category. So it can be concluded that the workshop for child-friendly school learning models can improve teacher competence in designing child-friendly scientific learning training.Keywords: Teacher Competence, Scientific Learning, Child Friendly School
