Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the differences in main account and second account Instagram uploads as a medium for self-disclosure among Gen Z students in Baubau city, and how the process of selecting information is carried out before being uploaded to each account. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to understand social events or symptoms, focusing on the overall picture of the research subject. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in uploads on the main account and secondary account of Instagram, considering various factors such as audience, level of trust, type of content, purpose, and socio-cultural aspects. Thus, it is not uncommon for informants to use private accounts and close friend features on their Instagram accounts. This process illustrates how informants have differentiated between the front stage and the back stage, specifically identifying which aspects of private life and which aspects of public life to balance and manage in terms of self-disclosure, privacy, and image.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the representation and impact of colonialism in the film The East (2020) through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. This film depicts the Dutch military aggression after Indonesian independence and presents the perspective of the perpetrators of colonialism who experience inner conflict. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method with semiotic analysis techniques on visual, verbal, and narrative elements in the film. The results of the study show that signs such as KNIL uniforms, military posts, Dutch, and acts of violence are symbols of repressive and dehumanizing colonial domination. The impact of colonialism in this film is not only shown physically through events and violence, but also psychologically on the main characters and socio-culturally on the local community. This representation provides a deep understanding of colonialism as a system of power that not only controls territory, but also influences individual identity and morality. The film The East is present as a medium for criticism and reflection on the complex and traumatic colonial history.

Abstract

This study compares OTT and influencer advertising across Malaysia and Russia and examines how cultural proximity shapes destination-marketing outcomes. A 2×2 between-subjects experiment (OTT vs. influencer × Malaysia vs. Russia) was conducted with online adult participants. The results show a significant main media effect on visit and purchase intention, as well as a Media × Culture interaction: influencer advertising performs better in Malaysia, whereas OTT performs better in Russia. Cultural proximity is positively associated with ad attitude, intention, and destination brand equity, and it also amplifies media effects. Practically, in markets similar to Malaysia, organizations should prioritize influencer-led strategies featuring culturally resonant creators. In markets similar to Russia, they should anchor reach and frequency through OTT, complemented by curated influencer activations. Overall, the findings clarify an operational bridge between nation-branding objectives, straightforward reach–frequency planning, and cultural proximity.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed the way individuals communicate, construct identity, and build influence in digital environments. Within this context, influencers play an important role in shaping audience perceptions, promoting products, and disseminating information through online platforms. This study aims to analyze the communication strategies used by local influencers in Baubau City to build personal branding on social media and to examine differences between influencers who consciously develop personal branding and those whose branding emerges organically. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach to explore influencer communication practices within their natural digital environments. Data were collected through observation, in depth interviews, and documentation involving three local influencers who actively produce content on social media. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman -qualitative analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that influencers produce content for multiple purposes, including gaining recognition, supporting local businesses, and generating economic benefits through digital collaborations. Storytelling, simple language, and audienceoriented communication styles were identified as the main strategies used to deliver messages effectively. The study also found differences in personal branding awareness among influencers. Some influencers deliberately design their branding through consistent content themes, slogans, and distinctive communication styles, while others develop their online identities gradually through ongoing interaction with audiences. Authenticity and ethical communication practices were also found to be essential for building audience trust and sustaining credibility. Overall, the study highlights the importance of strategic communication, authenticity, and content consistency in developing personal branding among local influencers. The findings contribute to the understanding of influencer communication within regional digital ecosystems and provide practical insights for emerging influencers seeking to build sustainable online identities.

Abstract

The Digital Literacy Action Program Based on a Website in Wasuemba Tourism Village, Buton Regency, is a community empowerment initiative to address limited digital literacy and underdeveloped tourism promotion. Despite being listed in the Top 100 ADWI 2024, marine, cultural, and local product potentials have not significantly improved community welfare due to inadequate internet infrastructure, low digital skills, and reliance on simple social media content. This program, implemented by Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton with Pokdarwis Lahonduru, involved socialization, management training, the development of an official village website (https://wasuemba-desa.id), Starlink internet installation, and digital content workshops. Results indicate improved digital literacy, with participants’ understanding rising from 38% (pre-test) to 60% highly proficient (post-test). Academically, the program contributes a community-based digital literacy model for tourism village development. Socio-economically, it fosters community participation, broadens promotion, increases tourist visits, and creates new entrepreneurial opportunities. Hence, the program emphasizes the importance of integrating digital literacy, infrastructure, and community participation to enhance rural tourism competitiveness in the digital era.

Abstract

The film Jumbo (2025) presents a compelling portrayal of bullying through the experiences of the protagonist, Jumbo, a young elephant marginalized by his peers. This study aims to analyze the representation of bullying in Jumbo using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory to explore how visual and narrative elements construct bullying behaviors, power dynamics, and moral messages. The research employs a qualitative, descriptive methodology, focusing on key scenes from the film. Through semiotic analysis, this study identifies the various forms of bullying depicted in the film—verbal, physical, and relational—and explores how the film critiques societal norms surrounding physical superiority. The findings highlight the transformative journey of Jumbo, whose personal growth challenges the normalization of bullying and promotes values of empathy, solidarity, and courage. By examining the ideological constructs embedded in the film, this research contributes to the understanding of how media, particularly animated films, can serve as powerful tools for social education and moral development. The study suggests that Jumbo offers important lessons for young audiences and calls for further research on the role of local animated films in addressing social issues in Indonesia.
