Abstract

Internet users have various purposes or motives for using internet service. Furthermore, internet usage proliferated by 40 percent amidst the COVID-19 pandemic social confinements. Interestingly, there is a tendency to do activities with the internet when under load or overload circumstance. This study aims to look at these two contradictory conditions and determine whether when someone is in a state of the tendency to be bored or depressed due to stressful conditions becomes a predictor for using the internet maladaptively. This study uses a quantitative approach with an accidental sampling technique. We recruited 235 internet users from adolescents to middle adulthood. The result showed boredom proneness and frustration intolerance predicted 34.4% of internet users' compulsive internet use. This study also showed a more significant impact of boredom to compulsive internet use rather than frustration intolerance. These findings indicate that people tend to use the internet more frequently in under load than overload conditions.

Awareness of attention, especially mind-wandering, is more prominent nowadays because of the development of technology that empowers a person to do several jobs and focus on several things simultaneously. This study examines internet-related behavior, namely online fear of missing out and compulsive internet use on mind wandering on active internet users. This study involved 327 internet users aged 17-40 years selected by convenience sampling. This research confirms that fear of missing out and compulsive internet use positively correlate with mind wandering. Furthermore, mind wandering and fear of missing are contrarily related with age. This study explicates that the contribution of internet-related behavior is significant to the incidence of mind wandering, which proves the influence of internet use on inattention, especially in young internet active users. Therefore, the younger generation must be cognizant of and monitor the use and impact of internet use, especially concerning the necessity to maintain focus when handling task demands. This study proposes addressing the adverse consequence of FOMO, compulsive internet use, and mind-wandering on productivity and wellbeing further, notably for the young age.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the online fear of missing out (ON-FoMO) scale in the Indonesian version. This research consists of two stages. In the first stage, this study also examines the dimensional structure of the ON-FoMO scale. A total of 327 respondents were involved in this process. The analysis used is exploratory factor analysis (EFA). In the second stage, this study was conducted to test the validity of the ON-FoMO scale. This test was carried out by calculating the correlation of the ON-FoMO scale with the fear of missing out (FoMO) scale and the big five inventory personality. This process involved as many as 245 respondents. This study indicates that the scale dimensions formed from the EFA testing process are the same as the dimensions of the original scale, namely four dimensions: anxiety, need to belong, addiction, and need for popularity. The anxiety dimension has contributed to the most significant variance value, 17.85%. The correlation of the four dimensions of ON-FoMO ranged from  r = .41 to r = .21. The results of the convergent validity test showed that the ON-FoMO scale was significantly correlated with the FoMO scale, neuroticism personality type, and openness personality type. Overall, the ON-FoMO scale has good validity. The correlation between ON-FoMO and the openess personality types is further discussed.

Abstract

Social well-being is a part of subjective well-being used to measure mental health as a measurement of mental health, which is an indicator of quality of life. People can achieve social well-being when they have a good and deep quality relationship with others. However, people use technology almost daily, impairing their social well-being. Moreover, they also tend to do cyberloafing, which makes them spend more time on their gadget. This project's principal objective was to investigate cyberloafing's effect on cognitive absorption and social well-being. A quantitative method using three questionnaires (cognitive absorption scale, cyberloafing questionnaire, and social well-being) involving 178 respondents was employed. The data was analyzed using Mediation Analysis in JASP software. The findings indicated a partial mediation in cyberloafing on the relationship between cognitive absorption and cyberloafing.
