Abstract

Desa Teuladan in Aceh Besar has significant potential for patchouli (Pogostemon Cablin Benth.) production. However, the development is constrained by limited access to quality local seedlings, weak institutional structures, and low women’s participation. This study aims to promote inclusive entrepreneurship through gender-responsive approaches, focusing on strengthening technical skills, establishing seedling enterprises, and fostering local economic institutions. Using Participatory Action Research (PAR) and gender mainstreaming principles, this study conducted training on seedling cultivation, organic composting, and basic business management, while facilitating the formation of women-led entrepreneurial groups and developing operational tools, including training modules, SOPs, and digital record-keeping systems. The initiative produces 1,500 high-quality seedlings with a 95% survival rate and establishes the Desa Teuladan Inclusive Patchouli Enterprise. The initiative also increases women’s empowerment, improves household income, and encourages more sustainable agricultural practices. These outcomes demonstrate a replicable model of gender-inclusive entrepreneurship that contributes to local development and university-community collaboration.

Abstract

Traditional pottery enterprises continue to face structural challenges that limit their ability to generate economic value, particularly in micro-scale, community-based settings where production relies heavily on manual techniques and tacit knowledge. These constraints often manifest in inefficient process design, uneven time allocation, and inconsistent quality control, all of which restrict value creation and weaken the economic resilience of artisans. Responding to these challenges, this study aims to examine how value is created within a traditional pottery production system and to assess whether targeted, context appropriate interventions can enhance value added without compromising artisanal identity. Using a production-oriented value chain approach, the research employs detailed observation, cost analysis, and semi structured interviews to map production activities and quantify value added across stages. This methodological combination enables a granular assessment of how specific production practices shape economic outcomes. The findings show that baseline value creation is weakly embedded in production activities and heavily dependent on extended labor input. Structural inefficiencies limit reinvestment capacity, particularly in drying and firing. However, targeted process improvements, including enhanced forming tools and controlled firing, significantly increased quality consistency and reduced defect rates. These interventions nearly doubled value added per production cycle while preserving traditional product characteristics. The study contributes to value chain scholarships by demonstrating the importance of production level granularity in informal manufacturing contexts. Practically, the results highlight the potential of modest, culturally aligned process improvements to strengthen productivity, income stability, and long-term sustainability in traditional craft industries.

Abstract

The global demand for patchouli oil as a raw material in the perfume industry is considerably high. However, the supply from exporting countries, particularly Indonesia, remains suboptimal. Aceh Province, one of Indonesia's key producers of patchouli oil, has been expanding its patchouli farming areas as a strategy to enhance productivity. Nevertheless, not all agricultural lands are suitable for patchouli cultivation. Therefore, it is essential to identify agricultural land resources that are ideal and sustainable for patchouli farming. The utilization of new potential lands could positively impact patchouli oil productivity. Land identification and mapping were carried out through observations and by utilizing candidate land indicator instruments. These indicators include land quality, land type, accessibility, land security systems, drainage systems, water sources, groundwater quality, and vulnerability to natural disasters. This article outlines the stages of community engagement activities conducted to identify the potential for patchouli farming in Teuladan Village, Lembah Seulawah Subdistrict, Aceh Besar Regency. The process involved program socialization, focus group discussions (FGDs), and interviews with farmers using candidate land surveys. The findings indicate that the agricultural land in Teuladan Village is suitable for sustainable patchouli cultivation. With the availability of ideal land and sufficient knowledge of proper patchouli cultivation practices, it is anticipated that high-quality patchouli oil can be produced. This will directly contribute to improving the welfare of the local community, particularly the farmers in Teuladan Village.

Abstract

This community service program aims to develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) cultivation system in Teuladan Village, Aceh Besar District. The methods applied include minimum tillage, a planting distance of 100 × 100 cm, planting holes of 30 × 30 × 30 cm, the application of compost at 20 tons per hectare two weeks before planting, and subsequent fertilization using urea (500 kg/ha), SP-36 (250 kg/ha), and KCl (500 kg/ha). Patchouli seedlings were sourced from the Patchouli Industry Center in Lhoong Subdistrict and distributed to farmers in quantities of 1,500–2,500 seedlings per person, depending on the available land area. The results of the program showed that this method supported optimal early plant growth, improved the physical and chemical properties of the soil, and enhanced farmers’ participation and understanding of sustainable cultivation practices. This approach has the potential to be replicated in other areas with similar agroecosystems, supporting the sustainable community-based development of patchouli as a commodity.

Abstract

Pengukuran kerja merupakan tata cara penetapan keseimbangan antara aktivitas manusia yang dikontribusikan dengan unit output yang dihasilkan. Pengukuran waktu kerja menghasilkan waktu baku untuk menyelesaikan suatu pekerjaan dalam kecepatan kerja dan kondisi kerja yang normal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghitung waktu kerja pada proses produksi parfum Neelam secara langsung dengan metode time study sehingga diperoleh kapasitas produksi parfum per-siklus pekerjaan dan per-bulan. Perhitungan waktu baku diawali dengan pemetaan proses kerja dalam bentuk peta proses operasi, kemudian melakukan pengukuran pendahuluan, pengujian keseragaman dan kecukupan data, penentuan faktor penyesuaian dan kelonggaran, menghitung waktu siklus, waktu normal dan waktu baku. Waktu baku yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis sehingga diperoleh informasi bahwa 1 siklus pekerjaan produksi parfum Neelam membutuhkan waktu 157,925 menit atau setara dengan 2,62 jam dengan jumlah produksi 111 botol parfum. Jika dibandingkan dengan jumlah permintaan parfum dalam 1 bulan, waktu baku produksi parfum Neelam telah memenuhi permintaan.Work measurement is a procedure for determining the balance between human activities contributed and the output units produced. Measurement of work time produces standard time to complete a job at average working speed and working conditions. This study aims to calculate the working time in the production process of Neelam perfume directly with the time study method to obtain perfume production capacity per-work cycle and per-month. The calculation of standard time begins with mapping the work process in the form of an operation process map, then taking preliminary measurements, testing the uniformity and adequacy of data, determining adjustment factors and allowances, calculating cycle time, normal time and standard time. The standard time obtained is then analyzed so that information is received that 1 cycle of Neelam perfume production work takes 157.925 minutes or the equivalent of 2.62 hours with the production of 111 bottles of perfume. Compared to the number of perfume requests in 1 month, the standard time for Neelam perfume production has met demand.
