Abstract

This study explores public sentiment on Instagram regarding advocacy around the tragic case of Nia Kurnia Sari, a young street vendor brutally murdered in an act of gender-based violence. The case underscores urgent issues of gender inequality and societal responses to violence against women, providing a significant context for this research. Using a critical feminist lens, the study analyzes 251 comments from the Instagram account @KalisMardiasih, employing a mixed-methods approach that integrates quantitative sentiment analysis and qualitative thematic coding. Sentiment analysis, conducted through Python notebooks to automate data processing, reveals that 45% of comments express empathy and solidarity with the victim, while 35% exhibit victim-blaming and skepticism toward feminist advocacy. The remaining 20% are categorized as neutral, including ambivalent statements, requests for more information, or non-committal responses. This neutral category offers essential insights into audience engagement dynamics. Thematic analysis identifies key themes such as solidarity, demands for systemic reform, and resistance rooted in patriarchal norms. Instagram emerges as an empowering platform for feminist advocacy and a contested space where progressive and conservative ideologies collide. These findings emphasize the importance of sustained advocacy and education to combat gender-based violence and advance gender equality.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of gender relations in best practices for accelerating the reduction of stunting in Labuhanbatu Utara Regency. Stunting, characterized by impaired child growth due to chronic malnutrition, remains a serious health issue in Indonesia. Although the prevalence of stunting has decreased, gender relations within families—particularly regarding child-rearing and nutrition—have yet to receive optimal attention in stunting reduction programs. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach conducted in Aek Korsik Village, which has achieved the status of a zero-stunting village. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with pregnant women, mothers with young children, prospective brides, and Family Assistance Team (TPK) cadres. The findings reveal that family roles are still predominantly assigned to women, especially mothers, who bear the primary responsibility for child-rearing and managing nutritional needs. Mothers play a central role in routine activities such as preparing meals and exclusively breastfeeding, while the involvement of fathers is more limited to important decision-making, particularly concerning the child's health. However, decisions like when to take a child to the doctor are typically made jointly by both husband and wife, indicating progress toward gender equality. Additionally, extended family support, especially from parents and in-laws, significantly helps mothers fulfill their caregiving responsibilities. Although traditional norms still influence the division of roles within the family, there are indications of movement toward greater gender equality, particularly in joint decision-making related to family health.

Abstract

Kenduri , a form of slametan ritual rooted in Javanese traditions, integrates religious devotion with cultural and social dimensions. It symbolizes collective identity, sustains moral values, and links individuals to the divine. This study aimed to understand how kenduri functions as a symbolic communication system, transmitting meanings through foods, prayers, spatial arrangements, and adaptive practices. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in a Javanese diaspora community in North Sumatra, employing participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data were coded and thematically analyzed to uncover how participants interpret and negotiate the ritual’s symbolic elements. The results indicate that kenduri ’s constituent symbols—such as bubur merah putih and ingkung—convey notions of purity, spirituality, and life cycles, while seating arrangements and prayer recitations foster communal unity and reinforce moral cohesion. Local adaptations, including the incorporation of regional ingredients, demonstrate kenduri ’s resilience in a pluralistic environment. These findings reveal kenduri as a dynamic communicative event, linking cultural heritage with contemporary realities and maintaining relevance despite historical shifts and demographic changes. By underscoring the ritual’s integrative and adaptive nature, this research advances our understanding of how religious practices generate and convey meaning across diverse contexts. Ultimately, kenduri exemplifies how ritual communication can preserve core values, reinforce community solidarity, and guide spiritual engagement, offering valuable insights for future comparative and interdisciplinary studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication strategy of Islamic da'wah in the digital era by utilizing social media as the main tool for spreading Islamic values. With rapid technological development, social media has become an effective platform for communicating religious messages to various levels of society, especially the younger generation. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method on several social media accounts that are active in conveying Islamic da'wah. The focus of the analysis includes content strategy, interaction with followers, and creative message packaging techniques to increase the audience's appeal and understanding of Islamic values. The results of the study show that effective da'wah communication strategies on social media include the use of attractive visuals, the use of easy-to-understand language, and two-way interaction with the audience through comments and question-and-answer sessions. In addition, collaboration with Muslim influencers has also been proven to expand the reach of messages. Although social media has great potential in spreading da'wah, there are challenges such as the risk of misinformation and negative comments that need to be faced wisely. This study concludes that a creative and adaptive approach in da'wah communication on social media can strengthen the dissemination of Islamic values and their relevance in the digital era. This research also provides recommendations for da'wah practitioners to develop communication strategies that are responsive to changes in digital trends

Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate that Javanese culture is not uniform. According to several research findings, there are numerous cultural variances among Javanese people, who regard themselves as different from other Javanese. In the Deli Serdang Regency, the marriage ceremony analyzed in this study does not only see a rich parade of a Javanese Deli cultural tradition. On the other hand, the Javanese Deli's marriage ceremony procession in Deli Serdang depicts identity that is produced through a historical process tailored to their socio-cultural environment. In this study, the building of the Javanese Deli identity during the wedding ceremony is examined from a Bergerian perspective, in which the Javanese Deli identity is constantly transformed and shaped socially and culturally. When in Deli, the essence of Java Deli is significantly influenced by changing situations and conditions that continue to evolve. As a result of the externalization, objectification, and internalization processes, Java Deli's manufactured identity is situational.

Abstract

The city of Medan is the third-largest city in Indonesia and has historical buildings or heritage that can be revitalized as a cultural heritage with tourism potential that can be developed. However, until now, the colonial heritage buildings have been destroyed up to 70%. This research method uses a tourism anthropology approach with a qualitative research type that focuses on tourist destinations. The research location is a heritage area, a colonial heritage building in the Merdeka Square segment, Maimoon segment, Benteng segment, Youth segment, Polonia segment, and Sambu segment. The study results reveal that Medan has a heritage in the form of historic buildings that have the potential to be developed and represent the identity of the city of Medan. The potential for tourism development can be carried out in 3 (three) potential areas, namely: 1) The youth segment, which includes Gedung Juang 45, which currently functions as the Sumatran Money Museum, Tip Top Restaurant, and Tjong A Fie Mansion. 2) the Maimoon segment, which includes: Maimoon Palace and the Great Mosque. 3) The Merdeka Square segment includes City Hall, which currently functions as the Grand City Hall, Hotel De Boer (currently called Grand Inna Hotel), and the London Sumatra building. Through urban tourism based on urban heritage tourism, tourists can be invited to appreciate and interpret the objects observed. It serves as education and recreation for the community. This activity is also a means of preserving the wealth and identity of the city of Medan.
