Abstract

This study explores critical discourse analysis in the context of the prolonged Israel-Palestine conflict. It examines the discourse of two prominent outlets with different geographic and cultural contexts, The Guardian and The Jakarta Post, during the May 2021 escalation. This qualitative study applies Van Dijk's (1984) three-dimensional framework, with adaptations from Van Leeuwen (2008), to analyze news articles at macro, super, and micro levels. The findings reveal that The Guardian emphasized humanitarian impacts and used euphemistic terms, while The Jakarta Post highlighted reactive actions and employed a more direct tone. At the superstructure level, differences in story organization and headline framing were evident, with The Guardian focusing on chronological sequencing and The Jakarta Post emphasizing Indonesia’s advocacy for Palestine. At the microstructure level, The Guardian framed Israel’s actions neutrally, while The Jakarta Post reflected a pro-Palestinian stance through dysphemistic lexical choices. Ideologically, The Guardian leaned toward a neutral stance, often legitimizing Israeli actions, whereas The Jakarta Post highlighted solidarity with Palestinian victims in alignment with Indonesia’s cultural and political context. These findings highlight geographic and cultural influences on media narratives. This study fosters deeper conflict analysis, enhancing critical discourse and offering insights into the ideological underpinnings of international media coverage.

Abstract

The lack of culturally relevant instructional materials for EFL learners, particularly in integrating linguistic competence with Islamic values, remains a critical challenge. This study addresses this issue by developing and validating the Speaking for Formal Interactions textbook, designed to enhance linguistic proficiency and ethical communication skills. Conducted within the English Language Education Department at AKM Islamic University (pseudonym), the research involved second-semester undergraduate students. Using the ADDIE model as a framework, data collection employed a mixed-methods approach, including semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and pre-tests and post-tests, with thematic analysis for qualitative data and statistical analysis for quantitative data. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ speaking skills and confidence, with qualitative feedback emphasizing the textbook’s alignment with Islamic values such as adab (courtesy) and tabligh (clear communication). Expert reviewers commended the content’s scaffolding and cultural integration while recommending the inclusion of advanced digital tools for enhanced interactivity. This study extends the ADDIE framework to culturally responsive education, offering a replicable model for integrating linguistic, cultural, and ethical dimensions, with future iterations suggesting broader applications and digital enhancements to increase accessibility and engagement.

Abstract

English language education in Indonesia spans from primary school to university levels. However, achieving mastery in English, particularly in speaking, remains a significant challenge for Indonesian university students. This study aimed to investigate the problems faced by these students in speaking English and describe their efforts to overcome this deficiency. The research utilized a descriptive qualitative method, employing questionnaires and interviews as instruments. The study participants consisted of 45 second-semester students from the English Education Department at AKM University (pseudonym). The findings revealed that students encountered both linguistic and psychological challenges when speaking English. Linguistic problems included confusion in tense usage, a lack of grammar understanding, and difficulty in selecting appropriate vocabulary. Psychological issues encompassed feelings of nervousness, lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and the fear of being laughed at. Furthermore, insufficient practice emerged as an environmental factor contributing to speaking difficulties. To address these challenges, students adopted various learning strategies proposed by Oxford (1990), including memory strategies, cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a fundamental component of language expression, alongside speech and grammar. Effective communication in a second language (L2) requires a broad vocabulary, irrespective of students' proficiency in grammar and pronunciation. Preliminary observations at AKM Islamic Senior High School revealed many students have low vocabulary proficiency. Morphology, the study of word formation, includes affixation—adding or removing prefixes and suffixes. Morphological awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate affixes, helps students deduce the meanings of unfamiliar words, thereby enriching their vocabulary. This study investigates the effectiveness of morphological awareness instruction in enhancing vocabulary among senior high school students. Using a true experimental design with a quantitative approach, participants were randomly selected by Mrs. F, an English teacher, and divided into experimental and control groups, each with 30 tenth-grade students. The experimental group received morphological instruction over three weeks, while the control group received traditional instruction using descriptive text material. Post-tests were administered to both groups, and data were analyzed using SPSS.25. The findings show a significant improvement in the experimental group's vocabulary proficiency, with an average post-test score of 68.40 compared to the control group's 53.80. An independent t-test confirmed a significant difference between the two groups. These results indicate that morphological awareness instruction is effective in improving the English vocabulary skills of senior high school students at AKM Islamic Senior High School.

Abstract

The rise of online platforms like "𝕏" (formerly Twitter) has transformed political discourse, where netizens frequently use expressive speech acts to communicate emotions and opinions. This study examines how expressive speech acts are used in netizen comments responding to President Joe Biden's post about U.S. economic growth, focusing on emotional expressions that reflect public sentiment. Through the application of Searle's theory of speech acts and Austin's felicity conditions, the research analyzes 46 comments using content analysis. The findings show a predominant use of literal and direct speech acts to express negative emotions, particularly dissatisfaction with Biden's economic policies. Additionally, the presence of sarcasm and irony demonstrates the complexity of online discourse, where non-literal speech acts convey more nuanced forms of criticism. These insights emphasize the evolving role of digital communication in political engagement and suggest the need for further research on how speech acts shape public opinion.

Abstract

This research analyzes the use of speech acts in the movie Heidi, selected for its rich content and depiction of effective communication and moral values, particularly the importance of adaptation in a new environment. The character Heidi, a talkative young girl, provides valuable examples of how communication is established and maintained through her interactions. The study aims to identify the forms and meanings of speech acts used by the characters and to understand the interpretation of dialogues between speakers and hearers. The descriptive qualitative analysis method is employed to examine all utterances in Heidi that contain speech acts and speech strategies. The data are classified based on the forms of speech acts according to Wijana's theories and the meanings of speech acts using Searle's theory. The findings reveal the presence of various types of speech acts, including direct literal, direct nonliteral, indirect literal, and indirect nonliteral speech acts. Specifically, 133 utterances were analyzed and categorized into Representative (27), Directive (50), Expressive (31), Commissive (25), and Declarative (1). The study also shows that characters in the movie predominantly use directive speech acts. This research enhances the understanding of speech act theory and its application in film dialogues, emphasizing the importance of context and intention in interpreting communication.

Abstract

Abstract. Snooker commentary, though often overlooked in linguistic research, presents a rich site for exploring how specialized vocabulary functions in live sporting contexts. In the broader field of sports linguistics, most register studies have concentrated on outdoor sports or E-sports, leaving cue sports like snooker relatively underexplored. This study aims to investigate the linguistic register of snooker commentary by identifying specialized vocabulary and analyzing morphological patterns in two professional finals. Adopting a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through non-participant observation and note-taking from live broadcasts, comprising 9,146 words of commentary and 525 register-specific terms, which were analyzed using Holmes’ theory of register and McCarthy’s morphological framework with focus on affixation and compounding. The analysis identified 69 unique register terms (e.g., frame-winning visits, potter, baulk color ball), showing that commentators used specialized vocabulary selectively to balance precision and accessibility. Morphological processes such as affixation (potter, doubler) and compounding (long pot, frame-winning visits) were central to constructing efficient, context-sensitive expressions. These findings indicate that register in snooker commentary functions both as a tool for technical description and as a strategy for audience engagement, contributing to broader discussions in sports linguistics and media studies about how specialized registers adapt to diverse audiences in global sporting broadcasts. Keywords: Affixation and Compounding, Morphological Analysis, Register, Snooker Commentary, Sports Linguistics.
