Abstract

Rapid and non-destructive method to determine maturity quality of mangoes accurately has played an increasing role in the fruits supply chain involving automation. Diffuse reflectance spectra (R) and absorbance spectra (Log 1/R) in the spectral range from 900 to 1400 nm were measured using NIRS spectroscopy at three different points of 257 Indonesians mangoes cultivar arumanis, manalagi, gadong, gincu and golek of different ripeness indices. Through principle component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) of the absorbance and reflectance spectra, cultivars can be differed with an accuracy of 99.8%. Multiple linear regression was applied to develop calibration models from mangoes with soluble solid content ranged between 5.5 and 13.5 % Brix and firmness ranged between 0.25 and 4.50 kgf. Log 1 /R calibration model could assess the soluble solid content and firmness of the mangoes with higher accuracy than R model with the coefficient of determination of 0.96 and 0.93, respectively. Results showed that NIRS spectroscopy has the feasibility to be employed in the maturity measures of Indonesian’s mangoes.

Abstract

Plants need an ideal and healthy soil condition for their growth and a sufficient amount of soil macronutrients. To determine soil nutrients, several methods have been widely employed. Yet, most of them are based on solvent extraction, which is normally time-consuming, requires complicated sample preparation, and sometimes involves chemical materials. Thus, a novel, fast and simultaneous method is required as an alternative method used to predict soil macronutrients in a short period and without involving chemical materials. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be considered for this need, since this method is fast, environmentally friendly, and non-destructive. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to apply an NIRS method to predict soil macronutrients (N, P, and K). The diffuse reflectance spectrum was acquired for soil samples in a wavelength range from 1000–2500 nm. Spectra data were corrected using a smoothing method whilst prediction models were developed using principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square regression (PLSR). Prediction accuracy and robustness were evaluated using these following statistical indicators: correlation coefficient (r), root mean square error (RMSEC) and residual predictive deviation (RPD). The results showed that NIRS was able to predict soil macronutrients simultaneously with a maximum correlation coefficient r = 0.97 for N prediction, r = 0.99 for P prediction, and r = 0.95 for K prediction. Thus, it may be concluded that an NIRS method is feasible to be applied as a novel, reliable and fast method to predict soil macronutrients (N, P, and K) simultaneously.

Abstract

Ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) pada spektra OSC menampilkan nilai tertinggi pula yaitu 3,63. Model kalibrasi yang diperoleh pada penelitian ini dapat ditransfer ke dalam spektrometer Vis-NIRS untuk prediksi kadar air melon golden secara cepat dan simultan.

Abstract

Microwave-assisted acid hydrolysis has an impact on the characteristics of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCCs). In this study, NCCs was prepared from banana peduncles through hydrolysis of sulfuric acid (concentrations of 1, 2, and 3 M) and hydrolysis time (0.5 and 1.5 h) assisted by microwave and ultrasonic energy to obtain the best NCCs. The characterization of NCCs properties, namely, yield, morphology, functional groups, crystallinity, heat resistance, particle size, and color. The results showed that the yield of NCCs decreased as sulfuric acid concentration and the time length of hydrolysis increased. The FTIR spectra of NCCs showed the most relevant molecular bands, namely O–H, C–H, and C–O, at the wavenumbers range of 3200–4000, 2500–3200, and 500–1500 cm−1, respectively. The TGA test showed that the decomposition of NCCs occurred at a temperature of 275.35–409.40 °C, with a weight loss ranging from 84.00% to 94.09%. Crystallinity index and crystal sizes range from 53.99% to 57.33% and 22.35 to 36.28 nm, respectively. The brightest color of NCCs powder was generated with 1 M sulfuric acid and a hydrolysis time of 0.5 h. In conclusion, barangan banana peduncles waste can be used as raw material for producing NCCs.

Abstract

A tool that can predict water quality by capturing sound vibrations generated by collisions between water samples and light is LPAS (Laser Photo-Acoustic Spectroscopy). To process the data acquired by LPAS, spectrum correction is needed to eliminate data errors when making acquisitions on water samples. The correction method used in this research is the cutting edge filtering correction method. The regression model that can be used is the PLSR (Partial Least Square Regression) regression model. This research was conducted in the Instrumentation and Energy Laboratory, Agricultural Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University. Water sample analysis was carried out at the Laboratory of the Industrial Research and Standardization Center (BARISTAND) Banda Aceh. This study used 4 monitoring wells within the TPA (Final Disposal Site) and 4 samples were taken from community wells outside the scope of TPA Gampong Jawa, Banda Aceh City. The results of this study indicate the parameters (temperature, turbidity, Ph, TSS, DO, BOD and Nitrate) are predicted to be in the frequency range 4000 - 10,000 cm-1. Raw spectrum data for pH and Nitrate (NO3-) parameters produce better data than the spectrum data for cutting edge filtering correction methods while cutting edge filtering spectrum data for temperature, turbidity, TSS, DO and BOD-5 parameters are better than spectrum raw data. This study also shows that the cutting edge filtering correction method is able to cut boundaries and compress the spectrum so that it can provide data limits on the spectrum so that the PLSR method can be applied to predict water quality. Keywords: water quality; Laser Photo-Acoustic Spectroscopy, correction method, regression method
