Abstract

Cultural products can form the identity of an area, one of which is Batik. Contemporary Semarang Batik is one of the cultural products of the City of Semarang that has a unique form of folklore content on its motives, which illustrates the identity of the city of Semarang. Regrettably, most of the people of Semarang city do not know the content of the folklore on their homemade Batik cloth. From an economic standpoint, this is not a problem, but when viewed in terms of the sustainability of cultural heritage, this should not happen. In the era of globalization, cultural products need to have collaborated with technology; it is necessary to re-create past art forms into something interesting for modern society to consume. The data collected in this study used a qualitative method in the form of interviews and direct observations visiting Semarang and quantitative Batik artisans by distributing questionnaires online. The process of transforming traditions, visually using Bahasa Rupa, and Augmented reality technology became the theory that underlies the re-creation of folklore in the Batik motif of Semarang. Through the collaboration of regional culture with technology has become an alternative to the re-creation of regional culture into a new form of media that is closer to the daily lives of the younger generation. This is also an effort to sustain the cultural heritage of the city of Semarang.

Abstract

Souvenir products produced by SMEs in the city of Bandung are very diverse. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the tourism industry to decline; souvenirs cannot be purchased directly at tourist sites. Advances in technology and government support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have opened up opportunities to migrate to sell products online. The souvenir food products need to be packaged attractively and have local characteristics because local identity can be one of the unique things that will attract consumers. Nine samples of food products as souvenirs from the Sabilulungan Community SMEs, assisted by Department of Industry and Commerce Soreang Regency, West Java, have redesigned their packaging. The old and new packages were arranged side by side; a comparative study was conducted, measured respondents' design tastes, respondents' reasons for choosing designs, and product sales results using the Chi-Square test. The data collection method is by distributing questionnaires filled out when visitors shop at the product bazaar. The results of data calculations reveal that well-designed packaging and have an identity that matches the food will increase purchases. Local characteristics can be used as an identity that is displayed aesthetically and uniquely to increase the value of local products. Local characteristics that are easiest for consumers to remember are symbols of local and familiar colors culture. A Packaging that uses zippers and is not too big is considered more efficient from the usability aspect. The form of packaging that is not just a box is considered more unique.

Abstract

Batik motifs are a medium for perpetuating collective memory based on the creator’s point of view of social, cultural, and political conditions of the time. There are differences in meaning and ideology in batik motifs made during colonial and post-colonial era. Using the theory of collective memory and postcolonial mimicry, we want to reveal the differences in meaning and ideology between batik made during the colonial era and after independence. The method in this study is descriptive analysis, using a purposive sample of batik motifs of Dutch East Indies soldiers made by Indo-European, Indo-Arab, Chinese Peranakan, and Bumiputera entrepreneurs. The results show that the Javanese and Lombok War Batiks made during the colonial era are a medium to documentthe collective memory of the colonial community with the ideology that the Dutch East Indies soldiers were brave and great protagonists. Batik Kompeni, contrastingly, is a documentation of the collective memory of the colonized people with the ideology that the Dutch East Indies soldiers were the cruel antagonists. The findings reveal that batik is a medium of collective memory; its creation is closely related to the ideology of the batik creator.

Abstract

Batang Batik has unique motifs that originate from its historical background as part of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, and its geographical area adjacent to the coastal batik center of Pekalongan. Batang Keratonan Batik is influenced by the Mataram Keraton Batik, while the Batang Pesisiran Batik is influenced by the Pekalongan Batik. The influence of the Mataram Keraton Batik can be seen from the use of sogan (brown) color, as well as geometric, and organic abstract motifs, while the influence of Pekalongan Batik in the use of bright colors and figurative organic motifs. Even though they have similar designs, there are also differences between the Batang Keratonan Batik and the Mataram Keraton Batik, as well as between the Batang Pesisiran Batik and the Pekalongan Batik. The similarities and differences in visual styles are interesting to study because they show the dominance of power over aesthetic tastes from Pierre Bourdieu's concept; and the phenomenon of mimicry from the STORM theory from the study of social psychology. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with purposive samples originating from the Pisan Bali motif on 2 pieces of Batang Keratonan Batik and 1 piece of Mataram Keraton Batik, as well as floral and bird motifs on 1 piece of Batang Pesisiran Batik, 1 piece of Rifa'iyah Batik, and Pekalongan Batik. To reveal the similarities and differences in batik designs, we conducted a visual content analysis of color, motifs, execution of forms, layout, and composition. Furthermore, the concept of Pierre Bourdieu and the STORM mimicry theory were used to reveal the causes of the similarities and differences in visual styles of the purposive samples. The results of the analysis show that the similarities in visual style are due to the influence of power domination on aesthetic tastes in a field, and mimicry is done to gain social advantage, while the differences come from heterodoxy which occurs due to changes in the constellation of power in the social field.

Abstract

Universitas Kristen Maranatha is a private university in Bandung with a work program based on the ICE principles of integrity, care, and excellence in the disciplines of teaching, research, and community service, with one of them focusing on social problems. So far, lecturers from various study programs have collaborated with partners from the Yayasan Indonesia Ramah Lansia in West Java Province to develop materials relevant to ecoprint training for the elderly. The goal of this exercise is to provide the elderly an understanding of the ecoprint process as an art therapy tool for improving cognitive function. Art plays a significant role in this activity since it is a sort of creative activity that keeps the elderly engaged and productive in their latter years. The exercise took place in the Seroja Elderly School in Cinambo, Bandung. It is believed that by participating in this activity, the elderly would be able to put the insights and ecoprint techniques they have learned to use to train their cognitive skills to stay in excellent shape.

Abstract

The research showed that historical events could create a narrative on batik motifs. The chronicle of the Javanese War had always been a part of the origins of Banyumasan Batik, including Maos Batik. The narrative about the Diponegoro War code on Maos Batik was a success factor in increasing the uniqueness of the Maos Batik. Although the truth was uncertain, this narrative was published and popularized through trusted online news media. The research used narrative analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. Narrative data were collected through reliable sources, narrative analysis from Propp, and the semiotics of the Barthes signification system to reveal the myths and ideologies contained in the Maos Batik motif. Online questionnaire data was from 108 respondents to determine the respondent interest level after knowing the Batik motif's narrative as the code for the Diponegoro War. The research reveals that the narrative of the Maos Batik motif as a code for the Diponegoro War cannot be clarified the truth of its history. However, the socialization carried out by the company owners through the popularity of the leading online news media has made this narrative considered historical truth. Strengthened by the myths contained in the Maos Batik motif, it can function to naturalize history. If this is not considered a historical fact, then the narrative can be accepted as a marketing strategy. The dissemination of the narrative in Maos Batik through trusted online news media can enhance the uniqueness of Maos Batik, which becomes a differentiation from other regions. This attracts consumers to buy and supports sustainability of Maos Batik.
