Abstract

The goal of this community service program was to assist teachers to learn more about technology and get better at using AI tools like ChatGPT, QuillBot, and Canva AI to make engaging learning materials. The program used a model of workshops where everyone could participate, followed by continuing mentoring and self-evaluation. Twenty English teachers from the Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) network went to SMPN 4 Gunung Sari for mixed-type training. Surveys, observations, and conversations were used to gather information. The results show that teachers' trust and ability to use AI in English Language Teaching (ELT) has grown significantly. Participants made lesson plans and teaching tools that used AI and shared the best ways to do things through digital communities. Teachers liked the practical method and were ready to keep using AI tools, even though there were some problems, like not enough infrastructures and not enough time for practice. This program shows that learning how to use AI can change the way teachers do their jobs and help schools build a culture of digital innovation that lasts. It is suggested that a training of trainers’ model be used to make the program more impactful to facilitate the MGMP community. Thus, it will create a chain effect that helps teachers become more independent and keeps the training going in their local areas.

Abstract

Motivation plays a central role in determining students’ success in learning English, particularly in rural educational contexts where exposure to the language is limited. In many rural senior high schools in Indonesia, students demonstrate fluctuating levels of engagement due to limited facilities, minimal communicative practice, and restricted access to authentic English input. Despite the importance of motivation in second language acquisition, qualitative investigations focusing on rural senior high school contexts remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to identify internal and external factors influencing students’ motivation and to examine instrumental and integrative motivational orientations among students at SMAN 1 Batukliang Utara. This research employed a qualitative case study design grounded in Gardner’s (1985) socio-educational model and Dörnyei’s (1998) motivational framework. The participants consisted of ten eleventh-grade students and two English teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s framework, using both deductive and inductive coding procedures. The findings indicate that internal motivation exists but is strongly influenced by students’ self-confidence and anxiety levels. External factors, particularly teacher encouragement, peer dynamics, and classroom atmosphere, significantly affect students’ engagement. Instrumental motivation is dominant, as students primarily associate English learning with academic achievement and career opportunities. Meanwhile, integrative motivation is present but remains underdeveloped and requires systematic reinforcement. The study concludes that students’ motivation is multidimensional and context-dependent, emphasizing the importance of balanced motivational development in rural EFL settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of sarcasm across different social contexts within the Sumbawanese speech community. The study used the Pragmatic Models: Conversational Implicature by Grice (1967, 1975; Grundy, 2000) theory. The sources of the data in this research were the daily conversations of Sumbawa people. The data was collected by doing procedures such as observations, interviews, notes, recording, books, and more. The data was analyzed by using thematic coding with following steps: identifying, classifying, describing, and giving conclusion. The result of this study showed that Sarcasm is an important aspect of communication in Sumbawa, and it is often used to criticize, ridicule, or mock someone's bad behavior. It can also be used to give advice or to humorously comment on a situation. Animal imagery, descriptions of human physical appearance, references to nature, and attitudes toward human behavior are all common elements of Sumbawan sarcasm. The context in which sarcasm is used varies, with different styles and approaches used in the family, society, and the work environment.
