Abstract

To meet the demand of current industries, the ability to write in English is highly essential in Indonesian vocational higher education. In today’s business world, students of business departments require a set of advance skills in writing business documents such as business letters and product descriptions. This research investigated the types of English sentence structures and errors in the descriptive paragraphs written by business management students of Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya. The method used was quantitative case study research. A total of 44 descriptive paragraphs were analyzed by using syntactical structure analysis and surface taxonomy-based errors. It revealed that all types of sentence structures were used in the descriptive paragraphs. There were 34.77% simple sentence structures, 22.96% compound sentence structures, 26.36% complex sentence structures, and 15.91% compound-complex sentence structures. Thus, the most widely used was simple sentence structures. Regarding the errors, it was found that only a few errors were made by them; omission (3 errors), addition (7 errors), misformation (19 errors), and misordering (1 error). Hence, misformation was the dominant error. In summary, the students wrote their descriptive paragraphs in simple sentences mostly and made errors in misformation the most.

Abstract

In today's digitalized world, written information is essential because eco-parks offer a variety of tourist attractions in one convenient location. Established in the regency, Plumeria Eco Park is a large eco-park located in Muara Enim. Its sustainability can be attained by collaborations by determining the potencies through a community service initiative. The purpose of this project was to map Plumeria Eco Park's potential as a new tourist attraction in Muara Enim to produce English-language content for its upcoming website eventually. Descriptive qualitative analysis through observation and interviewing was the methodology employed. For the potency mapping, every area within the eco-park was observed. Interviews were conducted with the owner and staff to get potency-related information. The mapping approach focused on five aspects of tourist destination potential: attraction, activities, amenities, accessibility, and accommodation. After the procedure, the results showed that Plumeria Eco Park could become the new tourism destination in Muara Enim since it fits the five criteria. This community service project is expected to help grow Plumeria Eco Park shortly as the first stage of a content-writing website.

Abstract

Websites for hotels are essential sources of information for prospective guests. Because of this, their readability and appeal are crucial to hotel internet marketing. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the linguistic strategies utilized by hotels for online promotion. This study initially introduces an analytical framework grounded in appraisal theory to elucidate the underlying mechanisms employed by hotels to foster interpersonal interactions. This framework is subsequently employed to analyze the online linguistic strategies utilized by the five-star hotels in Palembang. The overall linguistic strategy is found, along with the hotels' preference for using it. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, analyzing samples from hotel websites in Palembang based on their usage of language style. The findings indicated that metonym, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, simile, and synecdoche are the language types that the hotel frequently uses to entice readers to stay there with metaphor as the most dominant. In conclusion, one of the most important parts of making ads is using language style, which means changing the meaning of words and using figurative language to make them more fun to read.

Abstract

As vocational English emphasizes authentic workplace communication and digital literacy, this study examined integration of innovation technology and pedagogy in a vocational school. It investigated how vocational English teachers used technology innovation in the classroom, the opportunities it offered to help students become more proficient in the language, and the challenges encountered when putting it into practice. Fifteen English teachers of SMKN 2 Palembang, Indonesia, became the participants. A descriptive qualitative method was used as interviews, observations in the classroom, and documentation were conducted to gather data. The results of thematic analysis demonstrated how they incorporated interactive learning platforms, internet applications, and multimedia presentations into their lesson plans. Furthermore, it facilitated real-world, student-centered learning opportunities related to professional communication requirements and vocational contexts. There were still a number of issues, such as inadequate technology resources, inadequate training for teachers, erratic internet access, and disparities in students' digital competence. This study contributes to vocational English education by showing how innovative technology and pedagogy improve students' communication skills, learning engagement, and workplace preparedness while addressing the implementation challenges.

Abstract

Despite the growing integration of digital technology into English language instruction in vocational higher education, little research has explicitly looked at how technology-supported learning affects learner autonomy, English proficiency, and learning challenges among Indonesian vocational college students. This study examined how first-year students at Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya, Indonesia, learned English with the aid of technology based on their patterns of technology use, perceptions, contributions and challenges. Data from 474 students were gathered via an online survey utilizing a descriptive quantitative methodology, and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. The results showed that students regularly employed digital technologies to help them learn English (M=3.79, SD=0.95), with online videos, mobile applications, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, and online resources being widely used. Additionally, students showed positive perceptions of technology-supported English learning (M=3.98, SD=1.01), especially with regard to simple access to educational resources, heightened enthusiasm for learning, and enhanced comprehension of lessons. Additionally, it was believed that technology improved English language proficiency (M=3.92, SD=0.98), particularly speaking, listening, and reading. Additionally, the results demonstrated that technology fosters learner autonomy (M=3.81, SD=0.96) by allowing students to autonomously access resources, participate in self-directed learning, and assume more accountability for their educational journey. Despite these advantages, students reported a number of difficulties (M=3.40, SD=0.98), such as the need for more teacher supervision, inadequate internet access, technological difficulties, and learning distractions. Overall, the study shows that technology significantly improves vocational higher education students' English learning experiences, language growth, and learner autonomy. To optimize the advantages of technology-supported English learning, the results emphasize the significance of efficient technology integration, sufficient infrastructure, and pedagogical support.
