Abstract

Chitosan-pectin membranes are biodegradable polyelectrolyte complexes, derived from biomaterials, with good stability for drug delivery applications. This study investigates the potential of these membranes to encapsulate quercetin, a flavonoid known for its therapeutic properties but limited for its low solubility, poor bioavailability, and rapid elimination. The membranes were synthesized using a 1:1 (w/w) chitosan-to-pectin ratio and loaded with quercetin via solvent evaporation. Characterization using FTIR confirmed the presence of OH, C=O, and NH groups; XRD indicated semi-crystalline structure; and SEM revealed a uniform, porous morphology. The maximum quercetin loading efficiency reached 82.43%, with the highest release (90.39%) observed at pH 1.2, following first-order kinetics. The resulting membrane was thin, brown, homogeneous, and tear-resistant, demonstrating its potential as a controlled drug delivery matrix for quercetin

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of the discovery learning model using chemistry monopoly media on the critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of 11th-grade students. This research employs a quantitative descriptive approach with a quasi-experimental design and a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design, utilizing instruments in the form of tests and an observation guide. The sampling technique used is cluster random sampling. Both the experimental class and the control class have 35 students. This study collected data through tests (pretest and posttest). Data analysis was conducted using normality and homogeneity tests, followed by the Mann-Whitney U test (since the data are not normally distributed), and the N-Gain test for assessing learning effectiveness. The research results indicate that the experimental class achieved a 58.79% increase in learning outcomes, whereas the control class experienced a 36.51% increase. In terms of critical thinking ability, the experimental class showed an improvement of 56.00%, while the control class improved by 37.18%. The Mann-Whitney U hypothesis test revealed the significance of cognitive learning outcomes to be 0.041 and the significance of critical thinking ability to be 0.019. Thus, the implementation of discovery learning affects students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes in the context of acid-base chemistry

Abstract

This research aims to assess the ability of Zn-crosslinked chitosan (Chi) and alginate (AG) membranes to deliver quercetin into the body by testing the release with variations in the pH of the dissolution medium. Chi-AG membrane crosslinked with Zn and loaded with quercetin to produce Chi-AG-Zn membrane with tear-resistant and elastic properties. The FTIR spectrum of the Zn crosslinked Chi-AG membrane containing quercetin shows the formation of a Chi-AG-Zn membrane with a shift in the characteristic peaks and the formation of new characteristic groups, namely Zn at a wavelength of 549 cm−1 and phenol at 1379 cm−1. SEM testing showed that the surface of the fibrous membrane and quercetin were successfully loaded. Entrapment efficiency testing yielded relatively high results, specifically 91 ± 0.08%. The release of quercetin from the Zn-crosslinked Chi-AG membrane was investigated by varying the pH of the dissolution medium, specifically at pH 1.2, 5.0, and 7.4. The results showed the highest release at pH 7.4. Membrane release follows the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, and the release mechanism is governed by Fick's diffusion. These findings suggest that the Zn-crosslinked Chi-AG membrane has potential as a pH-responsive drug delivery system for targeted release in intestinal conditions.

Abstract

This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach that aims to describe and analyze the quality of Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) questions developed in integrated ethnoscience learning with a focus on scientific literacy and numeracy literacy in the topic of salt hydrolysis. There are various question formats, namely multiple choice, complex multiple choice, matching, short answer (fill in the blank), and true-false. The item quality analysis in this study involved: difficulty level testing, discrimination power testing, and instrument reliability testing. The difficulty level testing was conducted to determine the proportion of students who were able to answer each item correctly. The discrimination power testing aimed to determine the ability of each item to distinguish between high-ability and low-ability students. Meanwhile, the reliability testing was conducted to assess the overall internal consistency of the test instrument in measuring students' scientific literacy and numeracy skills. The variety of question formats is designed to accommodate the characteristics of AKM which emphasizes higher-order thinking skills, conceptual understanding, and the application of knowledge in the context of everyday life based on ethnoscience. The analysis results show that the majority of test items fall into the moderate difficulty category, indicating that they are neither too easy nor too difficult for students. Furthermore, the discriminatory power of the test items is in the good category, meaning each item effectively differentiates students with different ability levels. High instrument reliability indicates that the test instrument has good consistency and can provide stable and reliable measurement results.
