Abstract

Reading is really challenging for visually-impaired students, compared to other skills. The visually-impaired students learn reading skill in a different manner from the majority of students, such as they use Braille book and auditory media due to their inabilities to accommodate the visual teaching media. The visually-impaired students are required to be taught by means of specific strategies. Accordingly, it is of urgency to study further deeper how reading skill is taught in SMA-LB Negeri Pembina Lawang. The specific purposes of this study were describing the strategies used by English teacher, describing the problem faced by English teacher, and explaining how the English teacher solved the problem in teaching reading to the visually impaired student. The qualitative research design was employed in this study. The instruments used were observation checklist, field notes, and interview guide. It is found that there were six strategies used by English teacher in teaching reading to the visually impaired student, namely: (1) identifying the purpose of a text, (2) skimming the text for main ideas, (3) scanning the text for specific information, (4) analyzing the vocabulary, and two other strategies shown by the use of media suchlike (5) e-text strategy and (6) auditory strategy. There were five problems along with the ways to overcome the problems (1) English teacher could not use game-based strategy; (2) the English teacher had difficulty to introduce new vocabulary, but then the English teacher explained it clearly in other ways; (3) the English teacher could not use interactive teaching strategy because the visually impaired student was only one; (4) the English teacher had problem in time management, but then the English teacher gave additional time to teach visually impaired student; and (5) the English teacher had problems in implementing e-text strategy to the visually impaired student because the student had difficulty in understanding the dialect of native speaker (the voice of computer), but the English teacher let the visually impaired student get accustomed to that native like voice.Key Words: Teaching Reading, Teaching Reading Strategies, Visually-Impaired Student

Abstract

Story telling has been an icon of local culture preservation. Since local wisdoms knotted in local cultures are prone to be eroded along the changing eras, an effort to bring back and preserve them should be the penultimate concern, before implementing those values in real basis. Folklores have been the media to incarnate those local wisdoms, and thus this book is worth referring to when it comes to the topic of folklores for storytelling. All folklores covered in this book are originating from Indonesia, as the name suggests, “Nusantara”, served in bilingual versions – Bahasa and English. A series of training and drilling were planned to be conducted in SMP Negeri 02 and 03 Batu so as to project the English pronunciation precision. The stages include the followings: (1) FGD (Focused-Group Discussion) between researchers and the teachers as well as the students to tap challenging sounds susceptible to be mispronounced during storytelling the folklores taken from the book; (2) mapping corresponding English-Hijaiyah sounds to train; (3) modeling by CS Team and English teachers; (4) the students’ English pronunciation training by means of Hijaiyah corresponding sounds; (5) reflection and feedback for the betterment of training activities; (6) the students’ simulation for storytelling; and (7) video taking and making.

Abstract

The research was focused on solving the problems in a classroom and finding out that the diary writing can improve the students’ writing achievement. The research was classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this research were eight grade students of SMPN 3 Malang, VIII-1 class with total number of students 32. Diary writing was the treatment that had been given during 2 cycles. Additionally, the instruments to collect the data were test and observation field notes. After implementing the diary writing in two kinds of text, descriptive and recount, and analysing the collected data, it is found that the students’ score gradually improved specifically when they wrote recount text. Besides, the changing topics in every meeting were needed to make the students more interested in writing. The researchers found two weaknesses at the first cycle; those were students’ lateness in submitting their diaries which made the researcher also late in giving the feedbacks, and the students’ limited vocabulary which made them tend to use simple sentences and the same vocabularies. Dealing with those weaknesses, the researchers used award strategy. The researchers provided different emoticon stickers that rewarded the students’ punctuality and creativity. In addition, the researchers also conducted a pair work writing activity in the second cycle in order to make the students learn from their friends.Key words: Diary Writing, Writing Skill, SMPN 3 Malang

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendiskusikan bagaimana bunyi konsonan Hijaiyah diperkenalkan dalam pengajaran pronunciation di kelas Bahasa Inggris siswa sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah dua guru Bahasa Inggris dari Sekolah Dasar Islam di Malang; kedua guru tersebut masing-masing mengajar kelas satu dan dua. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik observasi dan wawancara. Data yang diperoleh kemudian ditranskripsi, ditinjau, dan dieksplorasi dengan cermat. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa ada tiga teknik yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran pronunciation, yaitu drilling, sound imitation, dan tes. Selain itu,  masing-masing teknik diintegrasikan ke dalam kegiatan EYL, melalui: menyanyikan lagu, mendongeng, dan permainan.

Abstract

Proper use of grammar is paramount as it affects the communication process between the addresser and the addressee. Ellipsis is one of the sub-topics in linguistics that focuses on the effective use of language in any type of discourse. To put it simply, ellipsis refers to the process of omitting/ellipting word(s) in any textual unit when the context is already established and can be assumed. This research is aimed at investigating: (1) the types of elliptical constructions found in advertisements of National Geographic Magazine and (2) the formulations of elliptical constructions in advertisements of National Geographic Magazine. A qualitative content analysis design was employed, taking all the advertisements found throughout the three issues of National Geographic Magazine from January to March 2018 as the research objects. All of the data were examined through the following steps: expert validation, identification, classification, and the elliptical operation analysis utilizing the concept of presupposition. The current study has revealed that all the three types of incohesive ellipsis were employed in the printed advertisements selected as the source material of this study. These three incohesive ellipsis types were: structural, situational, and textual, which are respectively 21, 18, and 6 data in total. These findings were associated heavily on the type of discourse used, the block-style language of printed advertisement is meant to be catchy, short, and effective for the readers upon delivering its information. This current study has come to its conclusion that ellipsis has colored the sentence formulations of advertisement in which economy contributes to its distinct features compared to other existing discourses.

Abstract

Abstrak: Guru mengajarkan siswa kosakata sederhana. Namun, para guru sering mengajarkan beberapa pengucapan secara tidak tepat. Ketidaksesuaian ini dipengaruhi oleh interferensi fonologis bahasa ibu serta tidak adanya beberapa bunyi dalam Bahasa Inggris dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Ini menjadi penyebab utama kesulitan dalam pengucapan guru yang berakibat pada pemodelan yang tidak tepat. Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, pengabdian masyarakat bertujuan membantu guru-guru untuk mengajarkan pengucapan Bahasa Inggris menggunakan bunyi konsonan dan vokal Hijaiyah yang sudah akrab di telinga siswa. Program ini dilakukan dalam tiga tahap; (1) inisiasi, di mana tim pengabdian dan guru berdiskusi tentang perencanaan pelaksanaan program, (2) implementasi, yang meliputi workshop, pelatihan mengajar, dan pengembangan media pembelajaran berbasis IT, dan (3) Presentasi dan Evaluasi, yakni melatih guru mengajar siswa pengucapan bahasa Inggris menggunakan huruf Hijaiyah dan media interaktif. Berdasarkan hasil Paired Sample T-test untuk nilai Sig. (2-tailed) adalah 0,002 < 0,05, dapat disimpulkan bahwa performa guru dalam mengajarkan Bahasa Inggris meningkat khususnya pada ketepatan melafalkan kosakata dalam Bahasa Inggris.Abstract: This community service program is carried out at Surya Gemilang Kindergarten, Malang City, where English is taught at the introduction level. The teacher teaches students simple vocabulary. However, teachers often teach some pronunciations incorrectly. This discrepancy is influenced by the phonological interference of the teachers' mother tongue and the absence of some English sounds in Indonesian. It results in improper modeling. To overcome this problem, the community service team aims to help Surya Gemilang Kindergarten teachers in Malang to teach English pronunciation using Hijaiyah consonants and vowels, which are already familiar to students. The program is carried out in three stages; (1) initiation, where the service team and teachers discuss the program implementation planning, (2) implementation: workshops, teaching training, and development of IT-based media, and (3) Presentation and Evaluation. This activity trains teachers to teach students English pronunciation using Hijaiyah letters and interactive media. Based on the results of the Paired Sample T-test for the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.002 < 0.05, it can be concluded that the teacher's performance in teaching English has increased, especially in the accuracy of pronouncing vocabulary in English.

Abstract

Bahasa di dunia sangat beragam, tetapi dimungkinkan adanya persamaan. Sebagai pelajar, sangat penting untuk mempelajari fonologi dan fonetik dari berbagai  bahasa untuk membandingkan dan menyamakan satu dengan yang lainnya. Bahasa Inggris dan Arab sama-sama memiliki struktur linguistik terbesar dari semua bahasa di dunia. Kedua bahasa tersebut memiliki kesamaan ciri, seperti konsonannya. Dari persamaan tersebut, Lestiono dan Gusdian (2017) melakukan penelitian terhadap konsonan bahasa Arab dalam membantu pengucapan bahasa Inggris, yang dikenal sebagai tabel kosonan bahasa Inggris-Hijaiyah. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengucapan dari delapan anggota paduan suara universitas dalam menyanyikan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris sebelum dan sesudah pengenalan konsonan Hijaiyah sebagai mediasi. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan studi kasus, yang termasuk dalam desain kualitatif yang digunakan dalam mencapai pengucapan yang dibangun oleh subjek penelitian melalui observasi, analisis, dan deskripsi. Objek penelitian ini adalah bunyi konsonan yang dihasilkan oleh peserta penelitian saat menyanyikan lagu “When I Sing” oleh Russel Robinson dan Charolette Lee dan “The Seal Lullaby” oleh Eric Whitacre dan Rudyard Kipling. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah dokumen analisis. Dalam analisis ditemukan adanya partisipan yang salah dalam mengucapkan kosa kata yang ditargetkan sebelum diperkenalkan dengan konsonan Hijaiyah. Setelah pengenalan konsonan Hijaiyah sebagian besar peserta terdengar akurat. Hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa konsonan Hijaiyah dapat memfasilitasi anggota paduan suara mahasiswa untuk belajar dan menghasilkan kata-kata bahasa Inggris yang akurat saat bernyanyi.    Language in the universe is various; however, it does not close the possibility that each languages have an equation. As a learner, it is crucial to learn the phonology and phonetics of some languages to compare and equalize one another. English and Arabic both have the biggest linguistic construction. Both languages have the sameness of characteristics such as some of their consonants. From those similarities, Lestiono and Gusdian (2017) conducted a study on Arabic Consonant sounds to arrive at English Pronunciation, known as English-Hijaiyah consonant corresponding chart. The objective of the current research is to discover the pronunciation of eight university choir members in singing English songs before and after the introduction of Hijaiyah consonants as the mediation. In this present study acquire a case study, which is included to qualitative design that was used in arriving at the pronunciation constructed by the research subjects through observation, analyzation, and description.. The research objects were the consonant sounds produced by research participants while singing “When I sing” by Russel Robinson and Charolette Lee and 'The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre and Rudyard Kipling. The instrument was document analysis. In the findings, participants mispronounced  many of the targetted words before they were introduced to Hijaiyah consonants as the mediation . Whereas, the pronunciation after the introduction showed that most of the participants sounded correct. This can be concluded that Hijaiyah consonants can facilitate the university student choir members to learn and produce accurate English words while singing.

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring the similarity between Arabic and English vowel sounds that may benefit Indonesians to pronounce some English vowels. This investigation approached whether their Arabic acquisition could facilitate their learning target language, which is English. To come up with the sought-after similarities, requiring an in-depth study on the existing literatures discussing the phonetic features of those two languages was the step to take. Accordingly, an archival study was selected and employed as a qualitative research design supported by the secondary data analysis method. Several kinds of literatures as the data sources were comprising scholarly journal articles, theory books of Arabic and English phonology, and proceedings. All of the data were available online and were readily accessed through several search-engine platforms; one of which was Google Scholar. The data collection process involved identifying the data set, evaluating the data set, tabulating, and synthesizing the data. The findings have articulated that English and Arabic languages have lax/short and tensed/long vowels. The short vowels comprised /ʌ/; /ɪ/; and /ʊ/. Meanwhile, the long vowels encompassed /a:/, /i:/, and /u:/. This sort of similarity has conveyed the notion of linguistic proximity, which contributes to language transfers upon acquiring the target language.

Abstract

Translation shift is a part that is not far from what is referred to the notion of translation and constitutes a process in translating which aims to find the equivalent meaning between SL and TL. It is caused by the rules that every language has. Translation shifts are divided into 2 types that are category shift and level shift. Furthermore, category shifts fall into 4 categories which are structure shift, unit shift, class shift, and intra system shift. This current study aimed 1) to investigate the types of translation shift which are found in the English and Indonesian translation versions of the Holy Quran of Surah Az-Zalzalah and 2) to discover the most dominant shift appearing in the English and Indonesian translation versions of the Holy Quran of Surah Az-Zalzalah. To answer the quest, the design used in this study was qualitative. This study has affirmed that, except structure shift, there are 3 types of shifts belonging to the category shift found namely: class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. To wrap up, this study has revealed that not all category shifts and level shift are found in the Indonesian-English translation version of surah Az-Zalzalah. Pergeseran bentuk (translation shift) merupakan bagian tidak terpisahkan dari proses penerjemahan dan bertujuan untuk menemukan bentuk yang paling sesuai untuk memadankan makna dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran. Fenomena pergeseran ini disebabkan adanya perbedaan tata bahasa. Translation shift dibagi menjadi dua tipe, yaitu pergeseran kategori (category shift) dan pergeseran tingkat (level shift). Lebih lanjut, pergeseran kategori dibagi menjadi 4, yaitu pergeseran struktur (structure shift), pergeseran unit (unit shift), pergeseran kelas kata (class shift), dan pergeseran intrasistem (intra system shift). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) menemukan bentuk-bentuk translation shift dalam versi dwibahasa (Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia) Al-Quran Surat Az-Zalzalah, serta 2) menemukan pergeseran yang paling dominan dalam proses penerjemahan versi dwibahasa Al-Quran Surat Az-Zalzalah. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kualitatif. Temuan penelitian ini adalah 3 bentuk pergeseran kategori yaitu: class shift, unit shift, dan intra system shift. Tidak ditemukan adanya pergeseran kategori berjenis pergeseran struktur. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah bahwa tidak semua bentuk translation shift ditemukan dalam versi dwibahasa Al-Quran Surat Az-Zalzalah.

Abstract

This community service program focused on assisting SD Aisyiyah Kota Malang to play a virtual drama entitled ‘The Tale of Wendit' as the material staging the local folktale of Malang in effort to accomplish an international collaboration with Dajeong School Korea.  The community service was carried out by sharing session about virtual drama performance, casting, rehearsals, videotaping, video launching, and virtual drama performance to teachers and students of Dajeong Primary School, Korea. Every session provided both English for Young Learners’ teachers and students opportunities to practice their reading and speaking for the performance. Besides, they also learned how to deal with digital platforms used for the rehearsal and virtual performance. The findings revealed that it was possible for teachers and students to include literature in English for Young Learners (EYL) learning in this digital era. During this pandemic, virtual drama performance can be carried out in primary school which has similar characteristics with the school where the community service was conducted.
