Abstract

Reading is one of the English skills that has a significant role in helping students acquire English better and succeed in the academic field. Unfortunately, most students still struggle with reading comprehension, especially descriptive text. The students can still not scan what descriptive text tells about, although they have read it repetitively. This study is proposed to discover students’ difficulties in reading descriptive text. The method is qualitative design with 35 subjects. The data were collected through interviews and observation. The result of this study showed that the difficulties in reading comprehension faced by students are due to the fact that the length of the text can frustrate students to grasp the meaning. Secondly, there is a lack of vocabulary mastery; most students are poor in vocabulary mastery and face difficulty gaining information on descriptive text when they find unfamiliar words. Thirdly, when reading without strategies, most students only read the text without implementing the appropriate methods to comprehend it better. Fourthly, there is a lack of prior knowledge: most students do not have background knowledge of the topic they read. Lastly, limited reading practice, since students only practice reading when English subjects have limited reading references.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine how well the modeling method improves EFL students' understanding of descriptive texts. A total of fifty-nine seventh-grade students from SMPN 2 Susoh were split into experimental and control groups for this quasi-experimental study. Traditional training was given to the control group, whereas the experimental group was taught a modeling method that included four stages: text modeling, deconstruction, co-construction, and self-construction. SPSS version 26, which featured independent samples t-tests, normality, homogeneity, and descriptive statistics, was utilized to assess the data. The experimental group improved by an average of 40.62 points on the post-test, whereas the control group improved by 39.71 points, according to the results. Statistical significance was achieved by the change (p =.042). As a result, the modeling technique has a somewhat positive effect on students' comprehension and composition of descriptive texts. These findings imply that the modeling strategy provides a methodical and successful teaching approach for junior high school English instruction, especially in the setting of EFL.

Abstract

English is an international language that is essential to master, especially in terms of speaking skills. However, many students still face limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and a lack of confidence. This study, conducted in Aceh Barat Daya, Indonesia, explores students' strategies for improving their English-speaking proficiency using a qualitative case study approach. A total of 9 junior high school students (ages 13–15) from three schools were selected through purposive sampling based on their English proficiency, participation in academic activities, and additional learning experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. The findings indicate that students employ a range of strategies to enhance their speaking skills, with learning and practice strategies being the most prevalent. The strategies employed include direct strategies (reading, looking for pronunciation, practicing, listening, and using English applications) and indirect strategies (using social media, structured lessons, self-directed learning, making friends with foreigners, and asking teachers and peers). The study recommends that teachers integrate these varied strategies into classroom instruction and promote technology-assisted speaking practice to better support students' development.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of animated videos in improving students' vocabulary and pronunciation in English language learning. The subjects in this study were grade fifth students totaling 36 elementary school students who followed the learning process with animated video media as an intervention. The method used was a quasi-experiment with pre-test and post-test design. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The results showed a significant increase in students' vocabulary and pronunciation skills after the intervention. The statistical test showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results of students' vocabulary and pronunciation skills. These findings reinforce the theory that audiovisual media, particularly animated videos, can help improve students' memory, context understanding, and learning motivation. Therefore, the use of animated videos as learning media is highly recommended to improve students' English proficiency in an effective and fun way. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of using animated videos on students’ motivation in learning English. This research was conducted at MTsN 4 Guhang using an experimental-based approach. Class VIII.1 comprised 27 students as the experimental group, and the students of Class VIII.2 were in the control class with 27 students. The data is collected by using a questionnaire consisting of 24 items, in the form of a Likert scale. Based on the results of the independent sample t-test, there was a statistically significant difference in students’ motivation between the experimental class that used animated videos and the control class that received conventional instruction. The t-test produced a p-value of less than 0.001, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (H_a) was rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of animated videos effectively increases students’ motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study investigates the anxiety levels of students at STKIP Muhammadiyah Aceh Barat Daya when taking the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) as one of the graduation requirements. Using a descriptive quantitative research design, data were collected from 70 English Education students 6 male and 64 female—who had taken the TOEFL but had not yet reached the passing score of 485 for the paper-based test. The Test Anxiety Questionnaire by Nist and Diehl, adapted by Muliawati et al. (2020), was used to measure cognitive, physical, and emotional aspects of anxiety. The results showed that the majority of students (77.1%) experienced moderate anxiety, followed by 18.6% with mild anxiety, and 4.3% with severe anxiety. Cognitive anxiety emerged as the most affected aspect, with difficulty choosing an answer being the most frequently reported symptom. These findings indicate that while anxiety is common during TOEFL testing, most students can manage it effectively. The study suggests the need for targeted strategies such as exam simulations, stress management training, and counseling services to help students optimize their performance

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of picture media in enhancing students’ procedural text writing skills through a quasi-experimental design involving 60 senior high school students, equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received instruction supported by picture media, whereas the control group was taught using conventional methods. Pretests and posttests were administered, with data analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test for the experimental group (non-normal distribution), the Paired Sample t-Test for the control group, and the Mann–Whitney U Test to compare posttest scores between groups. The findings reveal that both groups demonstrated significant improvement; however, the experimental group achieved a greater mean gain score (27.26) compared to the control group (15.50) and a higher posttest mean (83.43 vs. 65.50). The Mann–Whitney U Test produced a p-value of 0.000, confirming a statistically significant difference in performance. The greatest improvement was observed in content development, followed by organization and vocabulary. These results highlight the effectiveness of picture media in fostering students’ comprehension, engagement, and ability to sequence ideas coherently when writing procedural texts. The study concludes that picture-based instruction offers a more impactful and inclusive pedagogical approach for teaching procedural text writing in senior high schools.

Abstract

One of the problems in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia is students' lack of understanding the use of slang or casual language. This problem occur because learning in school generally emphasize grammar rather than casual use of everyday language, as often found in film or native conversations. Slang is usually difficult for students to understand because the context of its use is not always clear, and the meaning can be different from the literal meaning. In addition, the limited authentic partially open materials become an obstacle in presenting contextual and interesting learning. Based on this background, this study aims to analyze types of slang in the film Inside Out 2 and assess its potential as an authentic material to improve students' speaking skills. This research useds a qualitative method with a content analysis approach to the discourse script of the film to identify, classify, and interpret the use of various slang in each dialogue film. The results showed that there are various types of slang used naturally and according to the context of adolescent life, which are classified into five categories ; consiting of fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acrinym, and clipping. For further research, it is suggested that the development of learning media be carried out by utilizing films that contain slang elements. This media can be a form of digital modules, interactive videos,or student worksheets (LKS) that include conversational exercises, context understanding, and active use of slang. This contextualized approach is believed to increase speaking ability and cultural understanding of native English speakers.
