Abstract

This study aims to identify strategies employed by English teachers to enhance high school students’ speaking skills and to explore the challenges encountered in speaking instruction. A descriptive qualitative design was applied, with data collected through semi-structured interviews involving nine teachers from three sub-districts in Southwest Aceh. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with verification. The findings reveal that the strategies used include direct practice, role play, grammar translation, group discussion, interviews, cooperative learning, listen-and-repeat, video dialogue, and filler activities such as singing, games, icebreakers, and warm-ups. The most frequently implemented strategy was direct practice, proven effective in improving students’ fluency, accuracy, and confidence. However, teachers faced challenges such as limited study time at home, low motivation, lack of vocabulary, inattentiveness, and low self-confidence. The study recommends integrating interactive strategies with educational technology and fostering a supportive learning environment to encourage students to speak confidently and stay motivated.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of using short video clips to enhance students’ comprehension of the Simple Present Tense in English language learning. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post- test model, involving 31 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kuala Batee. Data collection was conducted through multiple-choice tests administered before and after the treatment. The analysis showed a significant improvement in students’ understanding, with the average pre-test score rising from 43.39 to 74.19 in the post- test. A paired sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.000), confirming the effectiveness of short video clips in improving grammatical comprehension. These findings suggest that incorporating engaging and context-rich audiovisual materials can significantly support grammar instruction in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. However, limitations such as the small sample size call for further research involving broader and more diverse populations to generalize the results. Additionally, combining short video clips with other interactive teaching strategies is recommended to maximize learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using Blooket, a web-based educational game, to improve English vocabulary mastery among fifth-grade students at SDN 6 Susoh, Southwest Aceh. Employing a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved 30 students who received four sessions of Blooket-based learning focused on family member vocabulary. Data were collected using a 20-item multiple-choice test administered before and after the intervention. Analysis through descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test revealed a significant increase in students’ vocabulary scores from a mean of 37.53 on the pretest to 74.83 on the posttest, with a p-value of <0.001. These findings suggest that Blooket effectively enhances vocabulary mastery by increasing student engagement and reducing achievement gaps through interactive, gamified learning. Despite the study’s limitations—such as the absence of a control group and a small sample size—Blooket demonstrates promise as a practical and motivating tool for primary school vocabulary instruction, particularly in rural contexts where traditional methods may fall short.

Abstract

This study explores high school students’ English literacy in interpreting printed advertisements of hygienic products. Literacy in this context is understood not only as the ability to read and comprehend English texts but also as the competence to analyze persuasive language, visual symbols, and health-related discourses embedded in advertisements. Printed advertisements are authentic learning resources that expose students to real-life English usage, such as slogans, imperatives, and emotive language, while also challenging them to recognize exaggeration, hidden ideologies, and cultural references. Findings from recent studies indicate that adolescents often struggle with the multimodal aspects of advertisements, including the combination of text and image, and the implicit health messages. By engaging with such materials, students can strengthen their functional literacy, enhance their critical literacy, and develop awareness as responsible consumers. This highlights the importance of integrating advertisement analysis into English learning to foster both language proficiency and critical health literacy
