Abstract

Coastal areas are often seen as marginalized areas, tending to be the focus of poverty. In East Java, coastal areas experience poverty rates 9-10% higher than the average for other regions. This research aims to analyze factors such as economic growth, labor force participation, human development, and access to clean water that influence poverty in the coastal region of East Java, as well as designing poverty reduction scenarios using a dynamic systems approach. The analysis method uses explanatory research with a quantitative approach, including regression analysis using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and System Dynamics. Panel data from 22 districts/cities in the coastal region of East Java from 2013 to 2022 were used in this research. The results of the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) test show that GDP per capita has a negative and significant impact on poverty in the coastal region of East Java. The labor force participation rate and regional spending have a positive but not significant influence. The Human Development Index influences poverty negatively and significantly, while access to clean water influences it positively and significantly. Dynamic system simulations show that by involving several variables simultaneously with the assumption that each increase in GRDP per capita is 4% and TPAK, HDI, and AAB is 1 percent, there will be a decrease in the number of poor people in the coastal areas of East Java Province by 1 percent.

Abstract

The complexity of organic farming system problems starts from the increasingly scarce availability of land resources, farmers' business capital which is still very limited and marketing access and the organic rice market chain, population growth continues to increase every year and the low quality of community resources, and knowledge in the application of technology and quality standardization will impact on the sustainability of organic rice commodities. The aim of this research is to analyze the sustainability status of organic rice commodities in terms of ecological, economic and social dimensions. The analytical method used in this research is Rapfish which is modified into RAP-Organic rice using the Multidimensional scaling method. The results of research on the multi-dimensional sustainability status of organic rice commodities including ecological, economic, social and infrastructure & technology dimensions show that organic rice commodities have a fairly sustainable index value with an index value of 73.58, meaning that with this index value all dimensions include: ecological dimension, economic, social and infrastructure & technology influence the sustainability status of organic rice commodities. The implication of the analysis results is that the Regional Government needs to increase attention to organic rice farmer groups regarding the importance of organic rice businesses by making special policies for the development of organic rice businesses to continue to increase the sustainability of organic rice commodities.

Abstract

The Indonesian government strives to achieve environmental sustainability and economic growth as integral components of its development strategy. Two perspectives are applied to evaluate whether Indonesia’s economic growth adversely impacts environmental preservation: the Business as Usual approach and the Green Growth framework. This study examines Indonesia’s financial commitment to green growth, which is being implemented nationwide. Employing a quantitative research approach, this study analyzes the Green Growth Framework (GGF) concerning Financial Deepening and its impact on Sustainable Development Goals from 1973 to 2014. Methodologies include the Error Correction Model (ECM) and Vector Auto Regression (VAR). The research explores the dynamics between Indonesia’s economic growth and the implementation of the GGF, highlighting how various indicators within the GGF demonstrate both immediate and long-term relationships with the framework. The analysis provides insights into the extent of Indonesia’s progress in integrating green growth principles within its financial and economic systems. The ECM and VAR methodologies reveal the short-term fluctuations and long-term trends, respectively, offering a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between economic policies and environmental sustainability. Results indicate that implementing the GGF significantly impacts financial deepening, influencing sustainable development outcomes. The findings suggest that while there is a strong connection between economic growth and environmental preservation initiatives, continuous efforts and policy adjustments are necessary to ensure the long-term success of green growth strategies. This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development by presenting empirical evidence from Indonesia, serving as a potential model for other developing nations aiming to balance economic expansion with environmental stewardship. The research underscores the importance of adopting a green growth framework to achieve sustainable development goals, providing valuable implications for policymakers and stakeholders.

Abstract

East Java has shown strong economic growth, which negatively affects its environmental quality. Analysis of the functional relationship between economic growth and environmental quality is important to direct the growth without further deteriorate the environmental quality in this area. It is assumed that growth produces some externalities on environmental quality. The spread of technological information, economic productivity, population growth or investment, can be the source of the growth externalities. The objective of this study is to test the significance of the involved growth externalities on East Java’s environmental quality. Using spatial data, the externalities are accommodated in a spatial version of the STIRPAT model. It is estimated using per city/regency 2015 data. The analysis indicates that local density, local agricultural productivity, neighboring density, and neighboring mining activity significantly affect the local environmental quality. The latter two are the main sources of the growth externalities.

Abstract

The Balanced Inclusive Green Growth Index (BIGGI) offers a comprehensive framework for evaluating sustainable development by integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions. This study aims to assess the application of BIGGI across Java Island, Indonesia, a key region contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using cross-sectional data from 2023 and factor analysis, the research identifies disparities among 107 districts and cities. Results reveal that 68 regions achieved high BIGGI scores (>1.000), reflecting a balance in green growth dimensions, while 13 regions scored ≤0.500 due to economic stagnation despite strong social indices. The methodology includes data normalization using the Min-Max approach and factor analysis validated through the Bartlett and Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) tests. These techniques consolidate multiple variables into a single composite index. Findings emphasize the need for targeted local government interventions, particularly in low-performing regions, to address economic disparities through infrastructure development, renewable energy investments, and policy enhancements. This research contributes to sustainable development literature by providing actionable insights for policymakers to implement equitable and inclusive green growth strategies. The study underscores the utility of BIGGI as a replicable framework for regions with similar socio-economic and environmental challenges, aligning local development efforts with global SDGs.

Abstract

Sustainable development balances economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental preservation to promote long-term community welfare. This study examines rural development in Osing Traditional Village, Banyuwangi Regency, using the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) to identify key assets, vulnerabilities, and sustainability strategies. Employing a quantitative descriptive method, the study integrates pentagonal asset analysis, vulnerability assessment, and SWOT analysis with data collected through surveys and interviews. Findings reveal that natural capital is the dominant asset (value: 9.75), supported by social and physical capital. However, vulnerabilities such as fertilizer scarcity, rising input costs, and agricultural land conversion pose significant threats to sustainability. This study addresses a critical research gap by analyzing asset interactions in a rapidly transforming, tourism-dependent village, offering novel insights into the integration of cultural preservation, economic development, and risk mitigation. Beyond the case study, it contributes to the theoretical discourse on sustainable rural development and provides actionable policy recommendations. These include agricultural land protection, improved financial access, and community-driven initiatives to ensure long-term prosperity without compromising ecological integrity.
