Plaque is a sticky deposit, consists of bacteria and it’s products in the form of biofilm that breed in a matrix on the surface of the tooth. Plaque can control chemically by using mouthwash. The infuse solution of guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) can be used as a herbal mouthwash. Antibacterial potency from the flavonoid in guava leaf can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans and glucosyltransferase enzyme activity. The purpose of this studi is to determining the effectiveness of gargling guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) infuse solution in reducing plaque index. This study was conducted with pre-test post-test control group design to 32 students of Dentistry Faculty of Andalas University as respondents in two days. The first day, 32 respondents gargled with aquades as a control group and the second day, 32 respondents gargled with infuse solution of guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) with 80% concentration as the case group. The plaque index was observed with modified plaque index Turesky-Gilmore-Glicman of Quigley-Hein. Result of the study is there is difference in the reduction of plaque index between the control group and the case group significantly (p <0.05), which the plaque index is lower in the case group than the control group. Conclusion of this study concluded that the infuse solution of guava leaf (Psidium guajava Linn) was effective in decreasing plaque index. Periodontal disease is a disease characterized by inflammation of the gingiva, loss of attachment, and damage to the alveolar bone. Bone loss caused by periodontitis may lead to tooth mobility which causes discomfort during mastication, difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene, and persistent inflammation which results in tooth loss. Splinting is a treatment to stabilize a tooth that is experiencing mobility due to periodontal problems. The most common alternative is the use of a fiber reinforced composite material that bonds to the tooth surface. Fiber works functionally, has good aesthetics, and can improve tooth stability due to mobility that occurs due to bone loss. However, in practice fiber splint also has the potential to fail due to several micro mechanisms. One of them was found in this case report. The following case report is regarding the use of a fiber reinforced composite splinting on lower anterior teeth involving two posterior teeth.

A case of a 27-year-old female patient presented clinically with short clinical crown due to caries and after endodontic treatment on upper right central incisor needs ferrule effect for final endodontic restoration was managed by surgical crown lengthening. To maintain a healthy periodontal-restorative interrelationship, exposure of tooth structure supragingivally becomes necessary which can be achieved by surgical crown lengthening. Biological width measured by comparing clinical and periapical radiograph. The reported case highlights the importance of through examination, proper diagnosis and the multidisciplinary approach.

The low level of public awareness causes a negative impact on oral health, especially for children. The bad effects that can occur are gingivitis. One of the factors that cause gingivitis is plaque. Therefore, this study wanted to determine whether the habit of brushing teeth before sleeping at night had an effect on gingival status. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of brushing teeth before going to bed at night on gingival status in grade IV and V students of SDN 08 Parak Gadang Barat, Padang, Prov. West Sumatra. This type of research is analytical with aresearch design cross sectional. The number of research samples was 34 children. The data collection method was conducted by interviewing and checking the gingival status using the Gingival Index according to Loe and Silness. Based on the results of the study, it was found that 55.9% of respondents had mild gingivitis and 52.9% of respondents had a habit of not regularly brushing their teeth at night before going to bed. Then, based on the results of thebivariate analysis Chi-Square, it was found that the habit of brushing teeth before going to bed at night with gingival status (p <0.05). The conclusion of this study was that the habit of brushing your teeth at night before going to bed affected the gingival status.

Gingivitis is defined as gingival inflammation caused by dental plaque accumulation. Bacteria in the plaque is releasing toxin that would trigger neutrophil to move to gingival sulcus as a main protection. Plaque control mechanically or chemically will be an effective prevention and care for gingivitis. Chemical control is done by mouthwash. Pineapple extract (Ananas comosus L.merr) contains bromelain which has antibacterial and antiinflammation features. The aim of this study was to find the effect of using pineapple-extracted mouthwash (Ananas comosus L. Merr) toward neutrophil count drop in gingival crevicular fluid of mild gingivitis patients. This study was quasy experimental using pre-test and post-test design, conducted to 21 patients having mild gingivitis with gingival crevicular fluid were taken by paperpoint 30 for 30 seconds. The neutrophil count was done with microscope. Paired T-test analysis showed that there was significant reduction of neutrophil count before and after the intervention (p<0.05). Mouthwash using 50 % pineapple-extracted solution for four days was proven to reduce neutrophil count in gingival crevicular fluid of mild gingivitis patients.

Dental plaque is the main cause of gingivitis. Plaque control mechanically or chemically is an effort to prevent and eliminate dental plaque. Chemical control is done by mouthwash. Pineapple extract contains bromelain enzyme which has antibacterial feature. To find the effect of using pineapple-extracted mouthwash in reducing bacterial colonies in dental plaque of mild gingivitis patients. This study was experimental laboratoris using pre- test and post-test with control group design, conducted in January-February 2018. Sample was 20 female students living in dormitory of Andalas university, divided into two group of treatment (using 50 % pineapple- extracted mouthwash) and control (using aquadest). Data was analyzed by T-test using SPSS. The result showed average drop of bacterial colonies in dental plaque of treatment group was higher than control group. Independent T-test showed that there was significant difference of bacterial colonies count between two groups (p=0.00). This was influenced by bromelain which has antibacterial feature by reducing bacterial surface tension with hidrolizing protein and glycoprotein in saliva that become the mediator of bacteria to adhere in dental surface. Mouthwash using 50 % pineapple-extracted solution for four days was proven to reduce bacterial colonies in dental plaque of mild gingivitis patients.

Background: The dental plaque becomes the main etiology of many hard and soft dental tissue’s problem. The dental plaque has a similar color with the teeth, it cannot be seen without a coloring agent. There are two types of coloring used, namely synthetic dyes and natural dyes. Anthocyanin is a natural coloring found in tamarillo that can be used to identify the dental plaque. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental method with post-test only one group design with independent t-test. The study was conducted in February 2019. Twelve samples were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The samples were given two times plaque examination, then the result were recorded in RKP (Plaque Control Record) form. The data analyzed by using SPSS. Results: The average score of plaque control with disclosing solution was 26.93%, while the plaque control score with tamarillo extract was 20.02%. Bivariate test results obtained p=0.037 (p<0.05) which means there is a significant difference between the plaque control scores using disclosing solution and plaque control with tamarillo extract. Conclusion: Tamarillo extract cannot be used in the identification of dental plaque, because the color intensity is not as good as the use of disclosing solution.
