Abstract

The main objective of this review is to explain the great potential of herbal plants as anticancer agents. Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cell growth in the body. The high number of cancer incidents still become a global concern because of the high mortality rate. The treatments of cancer such as chemotherapy can cause serious side effects by killing the normal cells. This is the reason why it is necessary to develop an alternative treatment of cancer. I discussed a plant that is believed to has health benefit. Many studies have showed the positive effect of Tithonia diversifolia plant for health. After 2000, the researchers discovered a new potential through its cytotoxicity to neoplastic cells. This plant needs to be developed sustainably. However, in the future this plant might become an effective alternative to treat cancer with lower side effects.

Abstract

Obesity is a health problem with an increasing prevalence every year in many countries including Indonesia.  Obese patients are at risk for complications related to some non-communicable diseases. The difficulty of losing weight in obese patients is due to low awareness of a good lifestyle, appropriate dietary patterns, and discipline in taking drugs to prevent complications. However, the need for drug consumption takes a long time. The risk of side effects arising from long-term drug use needs to be considered. Using herbal plants as an additional dietary intervention could be a better choice. This review described the benefits of the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower as antiobesity. This study is a literature review by searching preceding published articles in Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, and Google Scholar journals. The keywords used are (Clitoria ternatea) OR (Bunga Telang) OR (Butterfly pea) AND (Obesity) OR (Antiobesity). Articles are limited by publication period from 2012 to 2022 and then selected based on the criteria. This literature review concluded that the administration of Clitoria ternatea extracts (CTE) can become an alternative antiobesity by inhibiting weight gain, increasing adipose lipolysis, and decreasing the expression of adipogenic and lipogenic proteins.

Abstract

High burden rate of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide encourages for more new studies of therapeutic strategies to minimize the further morbidities and mortalities, especially in country with heavy prevalence of infection disease. One of the alternative approach is through the nature. Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) or Asian Pigeonwing is indigenous decorative plant commonly found in tropical region of the world, such as Pacific Asia, South America and Madagascar. The bright purple colour is notably utilized as natural food colouring in many Asian cuisine. The particular plant has been used for years as medicinal plant in various preparations, mostly as decoction for herbal drink/tea. However, scientific analysis to identify the possible health benefits are required to support the vaguely empirical testimony. The antibacterial component owned by butterfly pea plant is not limited by its flower petals only, but also the rest of the body, from the roots to the stem. The extraction process of butterfly pea plant shows myriad of phytochemical compounds with high pharmacological activity, especially as antibacterial against various bacteria such as E. coli and Bacillus cereus. Thus, this review compiles the recent ten years original article reported the antibacterial activities of Clitoria ternatea.

Abstract

Catha edulis (khat), belongs to a group of psychotropic plants, which has an amphetamine-like structure and contains many catin and cation. The plant contains hallucinogenic compounds and known for its calming effect. The excessive catin contained inside the fresh leave of khat could potentially induce a plenty of side effects especially when the leaves are directly consumed and uncooked. The side effects vary according to how long the plant has been consumed, started from local organ disruption to cardiovascular complication such as increased blood pressure to myocardial infarction. In the contrary, positive effects of the composition of khat have also been reported such as anti-inflammatory effect, antidiabetic, anticancer, immunomodulatory and increased improvement in respiratory diseases. Although myriad studies have been conducted to examine the best benefit obtained from the such plant, the legal issue on its utilization is still questionable. Therefore, khat consumption must be maintained with a proper and strong regulation to lessen the negative impacts. However, studies on the potency of khat are still ongoing. The literature review was written based on various books, journals, and search databases in Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane and Google Scholar to show the positive and negative effects of the habit in consuming khat.

Abstract

Abstract

Aedes aegypti is a mosquito species capable of transmitting dengue fever to humans. Vector control aimed at disrupting the mosquito life cycle is an effective strategy for preventing dengue fever. Larvicides are a class of pesticides used to kill insects at the larval stage. Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) contain active compounds such as flavonoids, which have potential larvicidal properties. This study aimed to determine the larvicidal effect of butterfly pea flower infusion (Clitoria ternatea L.). Telang flower tea was prepared at concentrations of 10%, 5%, 2.5%, and 1.25% for the treatment groups, while abate powder was used as the positive control. The study employed a completely randomized design by placing Aedes aegypti larvae into plastic cups divided into six groups with three replications, each containing 25 larvae. The treatment groups received telang flower tea at concentrations of 10%, 5%, 2.5%, and 1.25%. Larval mortality was observed over a 24-hour period. The results demonstrated larvicidal activity, as indicated by larval mortality. The effective concentration causing 50% larval mortality was 10% after 6 hours of observation, and 5% and 10% after 12 hours. In conclusion, telang flower tea (Clitoria ternatea L.) has been proven to exhibit larvicidal activity against instar III Aedes aegypti larvae at concentrations of 10% and 5%. The phytochemical compounds present in butterfly pea flowers—namely saponins, flavonoids, and tannins exert a rapid effect on larval mortality by damaging cell membranes or disrupting larval metabolic processes.

Abstract

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health issue that occurs after childbirth and can negatively impact the health of mothers and the development of their children. Addressing PPD requires a practical approach that includes the use of antidepressant therapy with Telehealth Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), which is expected to enhance post partum recovery. This review explores the comparative effectiveness of using antidepressants and implementing IPT in the recovery process from postpartum depression. Methods: This study reviewed and analyzed scientific articles from databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Springer Link, and Google Scholar using PRISMA-ScR framework. A total of 14 original articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion discussing the effectiveness of antidepressants and IPT. Results: The evidence demonstrated that antidepressant interventions, including conventional antidepressants and newer neuroactive steroid therapies, were generally associated with improvements in depressive symptoms. Telehealth IPT also demonstrated improvements in depressive outcomes and may provide an accessible alternative. However, substantial heterogeneity was observed in study designs, intervention characteristics, treatment duration, outcome measures, and follow-up periods, limiting direct comparison between pharmacological and telehealth-based IPT interventions. Conclusion: Both antidepressants and telehealth IPT effectively reduce PPD symptoms and enhance maternal well-being. However, further research is needed to understand these interventions' long-term impacts and explore the various types of available antidepressants.
