Abstract

Coastal waters are essential to both marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of local communities, yet they are increasingly vulnerable to degradation due to anthropogenic activities. This study aims to evaluate the water quality of the coastal waters in Poja Village, Sape District, Bima Regency, to assess the environmental health and the impact of local human activities on marine ecosystems. A descriptive-quantitative approach was employed, with water samples collected from seven locations to analyze physical and chemical parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and water visibility. The findings revealed that the water quality remains in a favorable condition, with temperatures ranging from 28.3°C to 30.0°C, pH values between 7.3 and 7.8, and salinity within acceptable standards. Nitrate concentrations were recorded between 5 and 10 ppm, indicating some anthropogenic influence, while ammonia and nitrite were undetectable. In conclusion, the coastal waters of Poja Village exhibit good quality, supporting marine ecosystems and local fishing activities. Regular monitoring is essential to ensure the sustainable management and conservation of marine resources.

Abstract

Coastal waters play a vital role in supporting ecological balance and socio-economic activities in island regions such as Lombok, Indonesia. Rapid tourism growth, coastal settlements, and marine transportation have increased environmental pressures on these ecosystems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ecological condition of Lombok’s coastal waters through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of ten scientific articles published between 2014 and 2025. The review follows the PRISMA protocol, focusing on themes of water quality, mangrove and coral reef ecosystems, pollution, and coastal management. The analysis reveals that most coastal areas in Lombok still meet the national seawater quality standards (PP No. 22/2021), with parameters such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen remaining within optimal ranges. However, nutrient enrichment and trace metal accumulation have been detected in high-activity zones like Mandalika and Teluk Kodek. Mangrove and coral ecosystems in Gili Petagan and Gili Matra remain relatively healthy, supporting conservation and eco-tourism potential. The findings emphasize the need for integrated, science-based management involving community participation to maintain ecological stability while promoting sustainable blue economy development toward Indonesia’s 2045 Vision.

Abstract

The Sekotong waters, which serve as a pearl aquaculture center, heavily rely on good water quality but face unseen threats that could jeopardize the sustainability of the pearl farming. This study aims to examine the presence and distribution of five major dinoflagellate genera Dinophysis, Gymnodinium, Prorocentrum, Ceratium, and Protoperidinium in the waters of Sekotong, West Lombok, which is both a conservation area and a center for pearl aquaculture. This research is crucial given the potential impacts of harmful dinoflagellates on marine ecosystems and the sustainability of pearl production. Sampling was conducted at four stations, revealing variations in dinoflagellate abundance. Station 1 was dominated by Protoperidinium (approximately 15%), followed by Gymnodinium (around 11%) and Dinophysis (about 15%). At Station 2, only Prorocentrum was observed with an abundance of around 24%, whereas Station 3 was mainly inhabited by Ceratium (15%) and Gymnodinium (13%). Station 4 was characterized solely by Ceratium with a low abundance of approximately 4%. Oceanographic conditions such as temperature, salinity, nutrient levels, and current patterns are believed to influence the distribution and abundance of these dinoflagellates, supporting various ecological strategies including photosynthesis, mixotrophy, and heterotrophy. The presence of toxin-producing genera like Dinophysis and Gymnodinium poses a risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs), which can adversely affect the ecosystem and pearl farming activities. Therefore, the findings emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring and effective management to prevent the negative impacts of these harmful dinoflagellates. This study provides a strong scientific basis to support conservation efforts and enhance the sustainability of pearl aquaculture in Sekotong, a region with significant ecological and economic value.
