Abstract

Sport and fitness is becoming more and more important in the lives of every human on the earth. Sports should beintegral in a person’s life. This is due to the benefits derived in terms of health and to increase their mastery of natureand the environment (WHO 2010). Sport involves basic human skills which are developed and exercised for theirown sake, in parallel with several advantages and benefits. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (2010),emphasised the risk of insufficient sport and physical activities in adolescents which lead to negative effect on healthand fitness. Malaysia has a long history in sports, unfortunately in recent years; the glory dwindled due to the society’schanging lifestyle. This phenomenon has prompted the government to form a new policy promoting the school PhysicalEducation and sporting activities. Malaysian Education Ministry has launched “One Student One Sport” policy on9th of June 2011, which focused on producing and developing a well balanced student in terms of physical, emotion, spiritual and intellect. The policy is in line with the National Sports Policy to cultivate sports in the community, and wasstarted in schools through two strategies, that is “Sports For All and Sports For Excellence.” One of the aims includenurturing human capital through wholesome participation amongst students in sports throughout the year, cultivatinga sporting culture so that they become a member of the society with an active, balanced and healthy lifestyle, forminggood values and self-discipline and creating a track record towards sporting excellence. The purpose of the policy isto move towards a balanced development of body and mind of our young ones. At the same time, it hopes to instillhealth and vitality into the sports culture in schools. But, the success of “one student, one sport” policy depends onthree factors. First, the Education Ministry must try to meet the needs of sports facilities and equipments. The secondfactor is that the number of sports periods must be increased. Third, the Physical Education curriculum design alsorequires some changes in order to attract the interest of students and make it as a culture in their life.

Abstract

This paper describes the importance of modification equipment and facilities in physical education teaching learning for elementary level. One of the physical education qualities is indicated by the adequate equipment and facilities. The ratio of teachers, students, and the equipment and facilities is important data in preparing quality teaching physical education. Physical education in elementary level is the basic building of the national sport system. The adequate equipment and facilities will bring a foundation for children to enjoy physical activity in physical education programs. By including equipment and facilities for physical education and sport in the law such as National Sports System Acts No. 3, 2005 and Regulation of the Ministry of National Education No. 24, 2007 about equipment and facilities standards for schools, the government has clear authority and regulation. In fact, different school has different capacity to provide adequate equipment and facilities. This can be solved by modification of the games and sport either from number of players, and teaching strategies. It is also necessary that the modification of physical education equipment and facilities is appropriate for elementary students. Winning and losing in games which are part of physical education programs is not the main point but how the children play it. Kata Kunci : Modifikasi, sarana, prasarana, pendidikan jasmani

Abstract

While physical activity can be one of the daily supports for good health that can help the educational process, the present study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement. It was quantitative correlational research involving 1045 students from 21 elementary schools (ESs) selected through proportional random sampling. Physical activity was measured by using the Assessment of Physical Activity Levels Questionnaire (APALQ), and academic achievement was investigated through the average scores of the previous semester's report card. The study revealed three categories of physical activity, namely ‘very active’, ‘moderately active’, and ‘inactive’. Less than 30 ES students (3%) were reported ‘very active’, 460 students (44%) were ‘moderately active’, and more than half (53%) were ‘inactive’. With a percentage of 33%, the overall average result of physical activity gained was 348, meaning that the average increase fell within the moderate range. While having a sig. value greater than 0.05 (0.529), the study suggests that there is no significant correlation between physical activity and academic performance. The study's weak correlation coefficient of 0.020 involves drawing the inference that there is no discernable relationship between physical activity and academic achievement on elementary school students.
