Abstract

Fishermen are an essential group in supporting national food security; however, their lives are still characterized by various social and economic challenges, such as unstable income, low education levels, and high household expenditure burdens. This research aims to provide an overview of the socio-economic conditions and welfare of Bouke Ami fishermen in the Nusantara Fisheries Port (PPN) Muara Angke, North Jakarta, through the Fishermen’s Exchange Rate (NTN) and Fishermen’s Exchange Rate Index (iNTN). The study was conducted in May–June 2025 using a descriptive method with quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and questionnaires distributed to 100 Bouke Ami crew members (ABK). The results showed that the majority of crew members were aged 30–39 years, had completed only junior high school education, received health services through community health centers (puskesmas), had three family dependents, and most lived in their own homes. The average total monthly income of Rp5.733.500 is considered high as it exceeds the 2025 DKI Jakarta minimum wage (UMP) of Rp5.367.381. Meanwhile, the average total expenditure of Rp5.396.761 remains below income, indicating manageable household finances. The NTN value was 1,06 in April and 1,07 in May, resulting in an iNTN of 101%, indicating that Bouke Ami fishermen in PPN Muara Angke, North Jakarta, are at a level of economic welfare classified as prosperous with slight improvement. This increase reflects a modest rise in fishermen’s purchasing power between the two months and can serve as basis for formulating policies aimed at empowering coastal fishermen.

Abstract

The red devil fish (Amphilophus citrinellus) has a rapid breeding nature; its presence is a problem and detrimental to fish farmers. This study aims to examine the reproductive aspects of the fish, which can be seen from several elements: sex ratio, gonad maturity level, gonad maturity index, and fecundity. The research method used is descriptive quantitative. Samples of red devil fish (Amphilophus citrinellus) were collected using purposive sampling at three sampling station locations. We conducted the sampling three times, every two weeks. Each sample collection consisted of 15 fish per station. The equipment used was a gill net with a mesh size of 2.5 inches, a net length of 100 m, and a net height of 1 m. We then place the caught fish into a coolbox and observe them. The research results indicate an imbalance in the sex ratio of the red devil fish population in Lake Batur. The male red devil fish population is larger than the female population. Based on the gonad maturity level (TKG), male red devil fish are most commonly found at TKG III and II, each having 20 individuals, while females are dominated by TKG IV, which has 35 individuals. The average gonad maturity index (IKG) for male fish is 0.25–0.65, while for females, it is 1.58–2.32. The average fecundity of females ranges from 582 to 790 eggs.

Abstract

Purse seine crew members play a strategic role in the success of fishing operations. Skills, experience, and effective coordination directly contribute to the quantity and quality of the catch. Vessel productivity is determined not only by technology and specifications, but also by the socioeconomic conditions of the crew, which are influenced by seasonal factors, profit-sharing systems, and fluctuations in fish prices. These conditions impact income stability, particularly for crew members (ABK), who generally do not receive a fixed salary. This study aims to analyze the socioeconomic conditions and welfare levels of purse seine crew members at Benoa Fishing Port, Bali, based on the fishermen’s Exchange Rate (Nilai Tukar Nelayan/NTN). This study applied a descriptive method with both quantitative and qualitative approaches through interviews and questionnaires, referring to 10 socioeconomic indicators from the BPS, including income, expenditure, home ownership, housing conditions, family health, access to healthcare, family education, access to transportation, security, and social access. The results show differences in welfare levels between caPTains and crew members. These differences indicate significant disparities in income, economic stability, and access to basic necessities. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for stakeholders in formulating policies to improve the welfare of purse seine crew members at Benoa Fishing Port and contribute to scientific knowledge.

Abstract

The capture fisheries landed at the Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN) in Prigi, Trenggalek, East Java, play a strategic role in influencing the social and economic conditions of fishing households. The production of bullet tuna is highly volatile, which in turn impacts these socio-economic conditions. This study aims to analyze the assessment of the social and economic domains in the implementation of EAFM for the bullet tuna fishery at PPN Prigi. It employs a qualitative method using the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM), which integrates social and economic aspects as a potential solution to achieve sustainable fisheries management and improve fishers' welfare. Data collection techniques included field observations and interviews with 98 fishers who use purse seine and Danish seine gear. The findings indicate that the social domain is rated as 'good' with a composite score of 66. This rating is characterized by a low potential for conflict, which is crucial to maintain, although stakeholder participation and the utilization of local knowledge are not yet optimal. The economic domain was classified as "moderate" with a score of 53, attributed to low ownership of productive assets and highly vulnerable income levels, which limit fishers' capacity to save. It is recommended that the government address the socio-economic vulnerabilities of fishers in an integrated manner, by strengthening regulation and mediation to mitigate potential conflicts, while simultaneously initiating productive asset assistance and business diversification programs supported by financial literacy.

Abstract

The lemuru (Sardinella lemuru) fishery at Pengambengan Nusantara Fishing Port (NFP) is vital to the local economy but faces challenges from fluctuating catches, potentially linked to overexploitation. This study evaluates the sustainability status of this fishery using the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) framework. Research conducted from May 2024 to July 2024 employed a mixed-methods approach, including direct observation, surveys, and interviews with 110 fishers, alongside biological data from 2,653 fish specimens. A multi-criteria analysis was used to calculate a composite sustainability index. The overall assessment yielded a score of 73,33 ('good' status), indicating that fisheries management at PNFP is generally satisfactory. However, critical issues were identified: a declining trend in fish size and inadequate management of Endangered, Threatened, and Protected (ETP) species. The study concludes that while the fishery is currently well-managed, urgent interventions are needed. Key recommendations include enforcing regulations on minimum catchable size and net mesh selectivity, alongside strengthening monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and ensure long-term sustainability.
