Abstract

The Kinipan Indigenous Forest is both a livelihood and a vital habitat for indigenous peoples, animals, and plants. However, the presence of corporates has caused issues that have upset the equilibrium of the Kinipan Customary Forest. This research seeks to analyze the pattern of interactions that led to the admission of corporations into customary forests and to identify the resistance of the indigenous Kinipan people. Qualitative approach was employed, including observation collection techniques and data documentation from a Watchdoc Documentary-uploaded documentary video titled "KINIPAN," which is supported by literature studies. The findings of this study indicate the existence of a power relationship between the government and the company regarding the regulation of mining permits and mining roads in the Kinipan Customary Forest, which is carried out without the community's participation, thereby causing social conflict between third parties. As a result of this conflict, indigenous peoples formed multiple communities to defend the forest, including the forester's community, the Dayak Tomun community, and the Borneo Red Army.

Abstract

Indonesia is the second country with a high level of biodiversity and culture from each region. One area that has high biodiversity and culture is the city of Cirebon. The unique culture of Cirebon City which combines aspects of biodiversity and culture is the Panjang Jimat Ritual which is carried out at the Kasepuhan Palace in Cirebon. This ritual is carried out on the night of 12 Rabiul Awwal which aims to commemorate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. However, until now, there has been no research that examines the various types of plants used in this ceremony, even though knowledge of the types of plants used can help to determine the status of natural resources, the distribution of plants, and the interactions between plants and people in the city of Cirebon. Therefore, this study aims to identify various types of plants and their symbolic meanings used in the Panjang Jimat ritual. The research method used is descriptive quantitative by collecting data through interviews and observation. The results showed that there were 18 plants used in this ceremony which included Oryza sativa, Cocos nucifera, Rosa sp., Mangifera indica, Musa paradisiaca, Magnolia alba, Curcuma longa, Syzygium aromaticum, Zingiber officinale, Cinnamomum verum, Jasminum sambac, Styrax japonica, Cananga odorata, Citrus sp., Bambusa sp., Arenga pinnata, Salacca zalacca, and Malus sp. This research is the first time it has been conducted, so ethnobotanical studies are very important to determine the interaction between plants and the local people of Cirebon.

Abstract

The tradition of jamasan pusaka (heirloom washing), or simply jamasan,  in Batang District involves various types of plants initsrituals. Plants, as part of the local cultural heritage, play an important role in maintaining the balance of parallelism and interrelationship between macrocosm and microcosm. Over time, this tradition has evolved, and this article aims to explorethe relationship and changes in ethnobotanical knowledge within the jamasan practice. It also analyzeshow the immanent and the transcendental functions of plantsare interpreted. Using a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach, data were collected through observation, interview, and visual documentation. The study identified 19 types of plants involved in the jamasan tradition. These plants , based on local knowledge, hold immanent and transcendental functions that are important for the continuity of the practice. The plants are categorized into mandatory elementsbased on immanent meaning, symbolic meaning, and non-mandatory elements. Jamasan is not merely the washing of heirlooms, butalso serves as a life guide for living meaningfully. Over time, the tradition has undergone transformations, with shifts from sacred to profane functions and from immanent to transcendental meanings. These changes have reconstructed the practice of jamasan in the present day.

Abstract

Plantations are a vital non-oil and gas sector that contributes to state revenues. However, the potential of plantations in Indonesia has not fully provided welfare for planters due to the complexity of social networks in management and harvesting. This article attempts to describe how social networks are formed in rubber and clove plantations by looking at the context of social structures in society. The focus of the Research on rubber and clove plantations is not to make comparisons but to explore more broadly the forms of social relations in different plantation management systems and commodity types. Data were collected through a qualitative approach using direct observations and interviews with rubber tappers and clove planters. The study results indicate that in managing rubber latex, tappers use sales networks with companies and middlemen, while in clove plantations, harvesting is closely related to the social relations of the community. This situation indicates that the management system and commodity type determine the social ties formed.
