Abstract

The ever growing usage of Instagram among youths and its role in the dissemination of political information is the main focus of this research. This study aims to answer the following question: How does Instagram usage, exposure to political content and feature usage influence political awareness and indirect political participation among youth during political demonstration? This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The data was collected from 120 undergraduate students from Padjadjaran University who are active users of Instagram and was analyzed using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The results of this research showed that exposure to political content on Instagram has a significant influence towards indirect political participation, such as spreading political awareness. On the other hand, Instagram usage intensity and the feature usage of Instagram did not show a significant influence on political awareness nor indirect political participation. These findings indicate that youths’ political engagement on social media is more influenced by the content that they encounter compared to the frequency of the platform usage itself. Therefore, this research highlights the importance of the political content’s role in encouraging indirect political participation among youths through social media. Keywords: Instagram; Social media; Political awareness; Political participation

Abstract

Instagram has increasingly developed as a platform for the dissemination of social–political information, enabling audiences not only to consume content but also to respond and participate through various forms of interaction. This study aims to examine the effects of interactivity cues and media richness on audience engagement with social–political educational content on the non-commercial informational Instagram account @whatisupindonesia. A quantitative explanatory approach was employed using content analysis of 167 posts, with data analyzed through negative binomial regression. Interactivity cues and media richness were treated as independent variables, while engagement, measured by the number of likes, comments, and shares, served as the dependent variable. The results indicate that media richness has a significant and consistent effect on all engagement indicators, particularly in video-based content. In contrast, interactivity cues show inconsistent effects and tend to be non-significant, or even negative, across several engagement indicators. These findings suggest that within the context of social–political educational content, visual and audiovisual richness plays a more dominant role than explicit interactive prompts in driving audience engagement.

Abstract

Climate change necessitates behavioral transformation among Generation Z, who are heavily influenced by TikTok. This study analyzes the impact of TikTok exposure on pro-environmental behavior among Universitas Padjadjaran students using the Theory of Planned Behavior. Data from 310 respondents were processed using SEM-PLS. Results indicate that TikTok exposure significantly is significantly associated with attitudes and subjective norms, driving environmental intentions and actions. A critical finding reveals that attitude (T-Stat 10.761) serves as a stronger mediator than subjective norms (T-Stat 6.943), suggesting that personal conviction outweighs social pressure. The model shows strong predictive power, with behavioral intention demonstrating a strong association with pro-environmental behavior (T-Stat 101.724). In conclusion, TikTok effectively mobilizes environmental action by internalizing personal values rather than mere social conformity.
