Abstract

ABSTRACT This research attempts to improve students’ achievement in reading descriptive text through reciprocal teaching. The instruments for collecting data were multiple choice test as the quantitative data and diary notes, questionnaire sheet, and observation sheet as the qualitative data. In the orientation test the mean scores was 49.17, in the first competence test the mean score was 63.29, and in the second competence test the mean score was 83.69. The improvement also can be seen from the percentage of students’ reading comprehension; in the orientation test 0% (0 students) got 75 points. In the first competence test 21.62% (eight students) got 75 points. It means there was an improvement about 21.62%. In the second competence test 78.37% (twenty nine students) got 75 points. The improvement was 56.75 %. It can be concluded that Reciprocal Teaching could improve students’ reading descriptive text.   Keywords: Achievement, Reading, Descriptive Text, Reciprocal Teaching

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study concerns on improving the students’ ability in writing recount text by applying jigsaw technique. The underlying objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching recount by applying Jigsaw Technique potentially improves students’ skill. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population was the 2011-2012 eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 H.Perak. The number of students was 36, consisting of females and males. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles where each cycle consisted of four meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was the writing of recount test while the qualitative data were gathered by using interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 28.75; for the Test II was 63.88, and for the Test III was 75.83. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the applying of Jigsaw Technique. The conclusion is that the application of Jigsaw Technique in writing recount text improves the students’ ability in writing recounts. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with improving stuudents’ achievement in reading comprehension through natural approach. The objective of this study is to iinvestigate whether there is any significant improvement of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension when it is taught by using natural approach. The subject of the study was Grade XI students of  Nasrani 3 Private Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Swasta Nasrani 3) Medan. There were thirty one students. They were taught by using Natural Approach. The instrument for data collection were teacher made test, observation sheet and questionaire. The techniques of data analysis applied were quantitative and qualitative. In analysing the data, the students were given three reading tests namely, Orientation Test, Test Cycle I and Test Cycle II. The mean of the students’ score for the first reading test as Orientation test was 51.61 the second reading test as Cycle I test was 66.61 and the third reading test as Cycle II test was 76.61. The total percentage of the improvement from the first reading test to the third was 77.41%. the conclusion is that the procedures of natural approach can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The qualitative data shows that the students were enthusiastic and interested in reading comprehension. It is suggested that teachers should apply Natural Approach as one of the media in improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Abstract

   Abstract The main objective of this study is to know how effective the use of Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts is. So this final project mainly aims at determining the effectiveness of using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. This study was conducted under the consideration that the students often get difficulties in describing something. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the writer designed an action research. The population of this study was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 29 Medan. The number of the subjects of this study was 37 students. During the research, the students becoming the subjects were taught by using Collaborative Writing in teaching writing descriptive texts. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle consisted of four phases. Before giving treatments in those two cycles, the students were given pre-test. After each treatment in each cycle, the students were tested. And the last, they were given post-test and questionnaire. The main purpose of conducting it was to find out the validity and the reliability of the test as instrument. The result of this research showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts improved after a series of treatments given in the cycles. It can be seen by comparing the means of their tests. The mean score for the pre-test was 53.92, the mean score for test 1 was 70.27, while the mean score for the post-test was 80.08. It is clear that after applying Collaborative Writing in each treatment, the mean of each test improves and gets better. The use of Collaborative Writing technique is one of the ways to make students interest in studying English especially writing descriptive text. Abstract

This study aims to find out the effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. The population of the study was the first year student at Man 2 Model Medan. In this study the sample is 50 students where 25 students took as experimental group and 25 students rest was control group. The data of this study was collected by oral test . It was applied in pre test and post test, then the scores were analyzes by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis showed that t-observed value is higher than t-table value ( 3>2.00 ) at the level os significant 0.05 with the degree of freedom 48. It means that there was a effect of applying community language learning method on the students’ achievement in speaking. Keywords: Community Language Learning, Students’ Achievement, Speaking

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing features of teacher talk in teaching speaking. The subject of this study were English Teacher and 40 students at first grade of SMA Negeri 20 Medan. The data were collected through the following: observation, and audio recording. In this research, the FLINT is used to identify the categories of teacher talk occur during the learning process. Moreover, this study is conducted in the form of descriptive qualitative research where the researcher as the non-participant observer on the classroom. From the data that has been taken, it is obtained that the categories of teacher talk used by the teacher in teaching speaking in the first grader of SMA Negeri 20 Medan are deals with feeling, praises or encourages, jokes, uses ideas of students, repeats students response verbatim, ask questions, gives information, corrects without rejection, give direction, criticizes student behavior, and Criticize student response. The finding of the study showed that there are eleven features of teacher talk occur in English classroom interaction and the dominant feature of teacher talk was ask questions (40.2%). The feature of teacher talk which is dominantly used by the teacher help students more active in the class because the teacher gave the oppurtunity to the learners to deliver their ideas, and try their ability in speaking skill.

Abstract

This study was about the theme, rheme and thematic progression of students‟ recount text of the eight grade at SMP RK Budi Mulia Pematangsiantar. The aim of this study were (1) to investigate thematic progression pattern used (2) to find out the reason why the students used thematic progression in the way they did. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study were clauses of students‟ recount text. The instrument of collecting data was elicitation technique and interview. The data were analyzed by using interactive model technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The result of this study were the following, (1) There were two patterns of thematic progression used in students‟ recount text, they were Theme Reteration/Constant Theme Pattern (TR/CTP), and Zig- zag/Linear Theme Pattern (Zig-zag/LTP). (2) The reason in use of thematic progression by students, they were: (a) the student‟s lack of knowledge about use of the thematic progression (b) they also less interested in writing, (c) the students got resources from reading material and (d) the students got resources from english teacher‟s explanation.

Abstract

This study focused on the use of tanslation in teaching listening for the eleventh grade. The aim of this study was to describe the use of translation and analyze the reasons of using translation in teaching listening grade eleventh at SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken from one english teacher of SMA Negeri 2 Kisaran. The data were collected by using recording, interviewing and observing the whole processes of teaching listening. The findings of this study showed that there were 34 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. The reasons of using translation in teaching listening were facilitating communication, teacher- student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching listening.

Abstract

This study focused on teachers and students in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model. The aims of this study are (a) to find out the structures that occur in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model, (b) to describe how the exchanges are realized with the structures of the two teachers. This research used qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, recording and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard’s Model (1975). The result of this study were the following, 1) there were three structures that occurred in English classroom interaction. The structures that occurred were initiation, response, and also feedback. There were 88 initiation, 95 responses, and 12 feedback of the overall utterances produced by teacher and students of XI Science 1. There were 111 initiation, 113 responses, and 15 feedback of the overall utterances produced by teacher and students of XI Social 1. 2) It was found that there were six types of exchanges which were realized with the structures between two teachers of two classes. The exchanges, namely: teacher elicit, teacher inform, teacher direct, student elicit, student inform, and check. In XI Science 1, it was found that the teacher inform was three, the teacher direct was three, the teacher elicit was sixty three, the student elicit was four, the student inform was one, and check was fourteen. In XI Social 1, it was found that the teacher inform was four, the teacher direct was fifteen, the teacher elicit was fifty three, the student elicit was three, the student inform was one, and check was thirty five.In teacher inform, teacher direct, teacher elicit, and check is started by the teacher initiate the students by informing, directing, and asking the question of the material to get the students’ response. In student elicit and student inform were started by the students initiate the teacher by informing, and asking the question of the material to get the teacher’s response or feedback.
