Abstract

Foreign languages have a certain role in the context of the life of languages in Indonesia. This function is realized in its use in certain domains, both natural and artificial based on language policy. In the Indonesian context, foreign languages, especially English, have an important role as a means of international communication. Ecologically, linguistic diversity in Indonesia requires a separation of functions and roles between local languages, Indonesian and foreign languages. In the context of language ecology, foreign languages have the potential to dominate Indonesian and local languages. Regarding Indonesian, hegemony occurs because foreign languages tend to have more economic value than Indonesian. Meanwhile, regarding local languages, foreign language hegemony is caused by low interdependence with local languages in terms of structure and lexicon. In terms of language policy and language ecology, there are prescriptive matters that must be adhered to, but there are also descriptive matters related to the function and role of foreign languages that need attention. Thus, foreign languages will remain important in the context of global communication.

Abstract

This study analyze lexical, contextual and symbolic meanings in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer using a semantic approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, focusing on excerpts from the novel that contain dominant and relevant meanings for the study. The analysis reveals that Pramoedya consistently utilizes the power of language to convey social criticism, human values and reflections on identity and struggle through these three layers of meaning. Lexical meaning are evident in the use of words that directly express injustice, racism and gender subordination. Contextual meanings appear in phrases and sentences shaped by the social and psychological situations of the character, while symbolic meanings emerge through symbols that reinforce the ideological and moral messages in the text. These findings demonstrate the complexity of meaning in Bumi Manusia and expand the scope of semantic studies in Indonesian literature, particularly in understanding social and cultural dynamics during the colonial period.

Abstract

this research examines the funnction of nine days in the cosmology of the indigenous Boti people in south central Timor,East Nusa Tenggara. In contrast to the modern linear and mechanical view of time, the Boti people view time cyclically with a nine-day cycle called “Neon”. Ths calendar system is the basis for the implementation of customs, traditions and ritulals in their daily lives, which are rooted in the teaching of halaeka as a sacred ancestral belief. Each day in the nine-day cycle has specific meanings and rules governing community activities, such as Neon Ai (fire day), Neon Oe (water day) and Neon Besi (iron day), which reflect the harmonious relationship between humans, nature and supernatural forces. This cosmological view affirms the importance of time as a gift from the Creator that must be honored through active participation, repetition of sacred events, and totality of action. This study confirms that the local wisdom of the Boti Tribe in interpreting time is a unique cultural heritage and needs to be preserved as a source of religious values and cultural identity of indigenous peoples on Timor Island
