Abstract

The distinctive traits of the conduct of the main character in the Forrest Gump movie, such as being both foolish and quick to understand, diligent, cranky, selfish, and subservient, have piqued the researchers’ curiosity in delving deeper into his character or personality by utilizing an archetypal approach. This research can educate and assist people to understand human character or personality. The purpose of this study is to explore more about the kinds of archetypes found in the main character of Forrest Gump movie. The researchers applied a qualitative descriptive method in which the exact procedure involved in the research process was known as research design: data gathering, classy, identifying, and analyzing some monologues and dialogues in this movie contextually and theoretically. The research subject was the main character of Forrest Gump movie. The result showed that from fifteen samples of data, there were five types of archetypes such as persona, ego, shadow, self, and anima. The most common archetype of the main character in this movie is persona. It shows that Forrest portrayed a different personality in public than he is. Anima is the least archetype in this movie and it indicated that Forrest has a feminine image which his submissive nature.

Abstract

Colloquial words are usually found in the caption or status of social media users. It sometimes creates a confuse for the readers or society because it is just understood by certain community. This becomes a unique and an interesting one to be explored. This research aims to investigate more about colloquial words in Indonesian social media captions those are mainly utilized by young people. It was conducted by a descriptive qualitative method using the theory of colloquial speech, Yule (2010). The data was taken from the captions made by social media users, then identified and classified based on its types. Furthermore, the data analysis of colloquial words was done contextually and theoretically. The research findings showed that from 66 colloquial words data, Coinage had become the highest rate percentage in which it is used to show the uniqueness and a trend or style in a social media caption or status. The unique things and new trends are easier to follow by young people, especially in Indonesian social media. Whereas backformation and derivation become the most rarely percentage used in the caption of Indonesian social media.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out a complete picture of local wisdom on the use of Minangkabau proverbs that have contrast meanings by the Minangkabau society in Medan North Sumatera, Indonesia. The research used descriptive qualitative method, by conducting interview as well as questionnaires distribution on provided proverbs to a total of 60 respondents from different regions of Minangkabau community, namely Kota Matsum I, II, III and IV. The data were collected and classified based on the various fields of Social Culture, Economy, Politics, Law, and Religion which were then analyzed by interpreting the meaning of contrast contained in the proverbs relating to the customs and traditions they practiced in daily life. It was found that despite the strong evidence on philosophy of cultural values and openness toward the modernization, this people have been consistently using the contrasted-meaning proverbs in their almost all-different-contexts of conversation. It also showed that the use of Minangkabau language as local language, has contributed to the field of language and literature studies, especially in the area of ethnical proverb that could enrich the repertoire of Indonesian, as the national language.

Abstract

Background: The development of technology has led to an increase in the interest of teenagers and students towards modern literary works so that literary works based on local wisdom are starting to be neglected. Purpose: This is the basis of this study developed to improve student literacy competence through the making of It-Based Bilingual Book of Folklore Drama Script which also aims to foster students’ interest in local culture. Design and methods: Classroom Action Research Method is used in this study. Results: The improving literacy competence experienced by students can be seen from the evaluation of the performance of the assignments they do. In Routine Task, students have an average score of 86.54. In Critical Journal Review task, the students' average has a literacy competence score of 87.90. In the Critical Book Review task, students have an average score of 89.33. Through the Mini Research task, the average score was 91.90. In the Idea Engineering tasks, the average score of students reached 90.27. In project assignments, it can be seen that the students' literacy competence increases in the aspects of reading, understanding and speaking with an average score of 94.09.

Abstract

Writing bilingual storybooks based on local wisdom is a product of the Prose Appreciation course. The results of the evaluation so far indicate that students' low literacy skills in developing literary works such as short stories, novels, and bilingual folklore books with IT-based ISBN in 8 ethnic groups in North Sumatra. There is also a phenomenon of the influence of globalization from the use of the internet which removes boundaries between countries resulting in the spread of globalization itself which has led to increasing interest among teenagers or students towards modern literary works originating from outside Indonesia such as America, Europe, and from Asian countries. For this reason, this study will be developed to improve st udent literacy competencies through 6 types of Tasks KKNI in making IT-based ISBN-based folklore books for 8 ethnic groups in North Sumatra. Indirectly, this research explores the elements of the existing culture and is also a measure to preserve local culture. This study uses the Classroom Action Research Method (PTK). This activity is carried out through several stages of the process are a. Training in writing folklore literary works based on local wisdom in Taman Budaya. b. Review process by internal reviewers (students (peer review), and lecturers). c.Validation by internal and external expert teams. d. Publishes ISBN books of bilingual folk tales. e. Create a blog about bilingual folklore books.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the Associative Meaning used in Minangkabau song's lyrics. It used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data by using textual analysis to elaborate the song's lyrics and the data was taken from Minangkabau songs such Japuiklah Denai, Kasiah tak sampai, Cinto ka Uda, and Pantai Padang. All songs were popularized by Elly Kasim, concerning individual experiences of her love like what was reported in Dialog Programme YouTube of Edriana Views, dialogue among Elly Kasim, Edriana, and her friends.  The findings showed all types of Associative Meaning were found in such Minangkabau songs. The most frequent type was Social Meaning 41%, Affective Meaning 29.7%, Connotative Meaning 21,8%, Reflected Meaning 4.7%, Collocative Meaning 3,1%. Social Meaning is mostly found to convey or introduce custom aspects of the writer's background of life. One of the Cultural aspects is the use of kinship stated in Minangkabau song’s lyric. Affective Meaning is stated to explore the writer’s feeling in the song's lyrics. Connotative meaning is also found to beautify Minangkabau song's lyrics by stating an indirect meaning and it has artistic values. Reflected Meaning shows the style or existence of harsh meaning in the song's lyrics. Collocative Meaning is found to reveal the song's lyrics in the same environment.

Abstract

Naturalism provides appreciation of the world works and encourages learning through identification of models and application of reasoning to problems. The purpose of this study is to explore scenes and dialogues of naturalism, in the movie The Florida Project.  The researchers applied the qualitative descriptive research method with the theory of the aspects of naturalism according to Vernon L. Parrington (1927). The subject was the story of The Florida Project. The researchers collected and identified scenes concerning the aspect of naturalism in the movie as the technique. The result showed several aspects of naturalism such as Objectivity, Flippant Disposition Toward Material, Determinism, Inclination Toward Negativity in Choice of Detail, Characters Are Liable to Specific Enticements, Frankness, and Pessimism. Science of naturalism can help humans see reality of life deeply and have broader understanding of the consequences occur in life. The most common aspect is Inclination Toward Negativity in the Choice of Detail. It shows that Halley, the main character tends to show her angry side more often than her calmness. Characters are Liable to Specific Enticements and Pessimism is the least aspect of this movie. Both are related to each other in terms of Halley's recklessness and unseriousness in her life.

Abstract

This research was aimed to explain the indices in evaluating English Summative test based on item analysis. In addition, this research was also aimed to find out the quality of the English Summative test for Ninth Grade Students of SMPS Letjen S Parman Medan based on item analysis, which covers item facility, item discrimination, and distractors efficiency. This research was descriptive-quantitative research. The data were taken from the English Summative Test, answer key, and the students’ answer sheets. The data were collected by documentary technique. There were three indices in evaluating English test based on item analysis, they were: item facility, item discrimination, and distractor efficiency. There was 0% very difficult item, 76% moderate item, and 24% very easy item. Item with negative discrimination were 2.22%, zero discrimination were 6.67%, low discrimination were 20%, moderate discrimination were 60%, and high discrimination were 11.11%. Items with functioned distractors were 42% and items with non-functioned distractors were 58%. The quality of English summative test for ninth grade students of SMPS S Parman was moderate. There were 11.11% good items, 57.78% moderate items, and 31.11% bad items.Keywords: Test, Item Analysis, Item Facility, Item Discrimination, Distractors Efficiency.

Abstract

In this social conditions, it is undeniable that cases of discrimination still dominate actions that are still widely felt by individuals, or groups of people.  This discriminatory attitude is still often found in social, cultural, school and work life. This study aimed at identifying the kinds of racial discrimination in Illustration and dialog of script and movie biographies about Harriet Tubman and what are Nigger's resistance toward those discriminations in the movie.  This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were taken from the script. The research instrument was the researcher herself by using a tool including laptop and books. The results of this research showed that in Harriet movie, there were five types of discrimination with the total of verbal antagonist (37,037%), avocation (18,518%), segregation (37,037%), physical attack (7,4071%). Racial discrimination is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, and finally discrimination found as the most dominant thing that the depict racism in the movie.

Abstract

The Butler movie explored discrimination between white and black people that created social grade which lead to the conflict. This became a very interesting one to explore. The purpose of this study was to find more about the racism in such movie. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method, and the research material was a dialogue from the movie "The Butler". The analyse was done by using the theory of racism, "three types of racism”, Michel Wieviorka (1995). The dialogue of the movie accompanied by picture as the sample of the data in analysis done by contextually and theoritically. The result of the study showed attitudes racism was the most prevalent, which means there are discriminations occured to black people in The Butler movie. Attitudes is a pattern of thinking or feeling about something or someone, generally represented in a person's behavior. While prejudice and opinions racism are the most rarely occured in such movie. Prejudice rarely occured in the social life because black people can not express their feeling and they struggle welfare, which was hard to achieve in the movie. Opinions rarely occured in the movie because white people grade was higher than black people in such movie.
