Abstract

This article addresses a significant gap in studies on regional identity, which often emphasize consumption while neglecting the role of production in shaping local identity. In response, this study investigates how local identity in Bondowoso is co-constructed through coffee production and consumption, particularly through the Kampung Kopi Pelita initiative. The research examines how historical legacies, state interventions, and everyday entrepreneurial practices intersect in making Bondowoso's Republik Kopi identity. This study used a qualitative Grounded Theory approach to examine the co-construction of local identity in Bondowoso. Data were collected through 25 semi-structured interviews with key actors in Kampung Kopi Pelita, including coffee entrepreneurs, Pokdarwis members, and community leaders. To complement the interviews, an FGD with 20 participants was held. These methods enabled a rich analysis of identity formation's symbolic, economic, and political aspects, with data reaching thematic saturation. The findings challenge dominant consumption-based perspectives by Arslan & Coskun, which underplay the productive agency of local actors. Instead, the study develops a model of identity co-creation where producers and consumers mutually shape symbolic meanings and regional imaginaries. Theoretically, it enriches Giddens' concept of reflexive identity by embedding it in local economic practices. Practically, this research provides insight into how rural branding initiatives can be more inclusive by involving grassroots entrepreneurial actors. In conclusion, Kampung Kopi Pelita emerges not merely as a commercial space but as a cultural arena where local identity is contested, negotiated, and collectively imagined.

Abstract

This study explores negotiation behavior between dragon fruit farmers and middlemen in Buluagung Village, Siliragung, Banyuwangi. Their social interactions form a system of mutual trust, as middlemen not only purchase harvests but also provide production capital. Negotiations occur before and after harvest to achieve fair pricing and mutual benefit. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through purposive sampling from key informants via observation, interviews, and documentation. The study applies George Homans’ Social Exchange Theory to interpret reciprocal relations based on trust, profit, and social ties. Findings show that negotiations are influenced by trust, kinship, professionalism, and profit motives, while conflicts or denial from either party hinder the process. Overall, the farmer–middleman relationship reflects a social exchange system balancing economic rationality with moral and familial values, demonstrating how local economic practices are embedded within community-based trust networks.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of online gaming has raised concerns about potential challenges facing students, particularly regarding mental health, financial stability, and economic implications. For Generation Z, online games have become a significant avenue for engaging in the informal economy, with gambling emerging as a prominent aspect facilitated by technological advancements. This study investigates how Generation Z navigates the allure of online gaming, resists temptations, and manages associated risks. Drawing upon Ulrich Beck's Risk Society theory and employing ethnographic methods, the research examines the decision-making processes of Generation Z players. Data collection involved interviews with respondents in various settings, supplemented by existing research in the field. The findings highlight several key issues, including the temptations of social media integration, peer influence, and financial gains, as well as the risks of accumulating debt and developing dependencies on gaming for entertainment and monetary rewards. These challenges pose significant implications for the mental well-being of Generation Z individuals.

Abstract

This study explores the leisure activities of young urban migrants in cafés, examining coffee as both a commodity and a modern mode of consumption within the framework of the culture industry. The choice of coffee and cafés is an inherent part of the identity of young people who want articulation space for cultural tastes and preferences. Thus, coffee culture and youth identity become crucial to elaborate the utilization of time conceptualized as determined by the capitalist production system. This research uses critical phenomenology to study urban migrant youth in Surabaya. It purposively determined eight informants consisting of university students from regencies in East Java, baristas, and café owners. Using mass culture analysis from the Frankfurt school, this research found that there is a standardization of space, either claimed as new or authentic, to emphasize the difference with existing cafés. Consequently, the subjectivities of young urban migrants in coffee culture settings are constructed in pursuit of novelty, popularised as ‘FoMO’. The study argues that the differentiation of cafés between urban and non-urban areas does not provide a clear distinction. Then, consumers and those who formulate the existence of cafés are faced with the need to create uniqueness or innovate to multiply profits. Instead of enjoying leisure, young urban migrants are absorbed and actively reproduce the existence of socially and virtually organized social systems.

Abstract

The use of intimate language in public spaces is a phenomenon that emerges in the interactions of economic actors in traditional markets. Therefore, language intimacy deconstructs social norms that should not be displayed in public spaces. However, language intimacy has emerged in traditional markets for a long time in the interactions of economic actors, including sellers, buyers, porters, parking attendants, and the social gathering community. This research explores how intimate language is articulated in an economic space closely related to the ethnic identity of economic actors in traditional markets in the Jember region. The ethnic diversity in question includes Javanese, Madurese, Chinese/Chinese, and Arab. This phenomenon was researched qualitatively using a post-structuralist approach and applying Julia Kristeva's theory of intertextuality. Data analysis uses two Kristeva concepts, namely intertextuality and suprasegmental. The data is processed by looking at the text production process originating inside and outside the text. The research results show that the intimacy of language, usually used in the private sphere, has succeeded in breaking down the rigidity of language in the public sphere, besides dissolving social relations between economic actors with various ethnicities and social classes. Thus, the use of greetings in intimate language closely related to ethnic identity is experiencing development and merging with the space of familiarity and closeness built by economic actors in traditional markets.
