Abstract

Genre-based Approach (GBA) is a teaching method that has long been implemented in the English learning context as well as other foreign language learning contexts. In this study, we examined the application of GBA in an online BIPA (Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing or Indonesian for Foreign Language Speakers) class by observing the classroom interaction patterns. The objective of this research is twofold. It is to investigate the extent to which the genre-based approach is applied and to discover the application of genre-based stages Building Knowledge of Field and Modelling in one online BIPA class. This study employed a qualitative discourse analytic method, specifically classroom discourse analysis following pedagogic register framework from systemic functional linguistics. The data were collected from the recordings of online BIPA class in two sessions, focusing on the stage of Building Knowledge of the Field and Modelling. The results indicate a variety of learning activities and a tendency of classifying a language skill to a specific stage from the GBA. These variations of activities and the classification of language skills suggest that there is a modification of the stage of genre-based approach in online BIPA class which is distinctive to that of other offline implementations.

Abstract

This paper aims to survey the implementation and the implication of Reading to Learn (R2L) for improving students' writing to inform future teaching practices. Reading to Learn (R2L) is a teaching methodology based on a language theory, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which has been reported as a successful program to improve students' literacy in different classroom contexts across the globe. This paper systematically reviews 14 studies on the implementation of R2L and its implications on students’ writing development from 2012 to 2023. This review indicates several key findings: 1) Most studies on R2L applied R2L to teach writing an argumentative genre, given that this genre is widely considered the most formidable genre for students; 2) The implementation of R2L exhibited various modifying strategies from the R2L cycles. Most studies modify the first layer of the cycles; 3) The final result shows the impact on students’ writing development. Thirteen out of the fourteen studies reviewed reported an increase in students’ textual organization, written literacy skills, students’ engagement in the classroom, and critical thinking.

Abstract

Editorial is an important part of newspapers since the opinions expressed can influence the reader's point of view. The two major Indonesian news media that publish editorials in their newspapers are Kompas and Tempo. This study explores the potential differences in editorial characters between Kompas and Tempo regarding the 2024 election issue. To achieve this goal, the organizational structure of editorial texts is examined and their attitudinal tendencies are investigated. The method used in this study is analytical discourse framework by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in particular genre (Iedema, et al., 1994) and APPRAISAL framework (Martin & White, 2005). Based on the findings of genre and APPRAISAL in the text, it is revealed that the editorials of Tempo tend to be explicit in showing their position against 2024 election issues. Tempo uses the genre of media exposition and built their attitudinal tendencies by using negative evaluations. Unlike Tempo, Kompas tends to be implicit in showing their position against the said issue. They adopted media discussion genre and their attitudinal tendency is built using positive evaluations. The results of this study reveal that in examining the character of a media, an analysis of editorial text genres needs to be carried out before investigating its attitudinal tendencies. Keywords: APPRAISAL, genre, discourse analysis, newspaper, editorial

Abstract

This paper investigates the implementation of note making from the Reading to Learn (R2L) program where students make notes from their reading texts and at the same time learn to read.  R2L is known to support literacy development but one specific phase, note making during the Joint Construction stage particularly in Indonesian EFL classrooms, remains largely unreported. This case study examines how the note making phase serves as a learning scaffold to teach reading. The study employs a pedagogic register to analyze classroom interactions and teacher-student relationships. The data were drawn from the classroom interaction recordings during the Joint Construction stage of R2L instruction. The findings indicate that pedagogical interaction during note making was characterized by explicit instruction, guided participation, affirmative scaffolding, and collaborative engagement between teacher and students. The assignment of reciter and scribe roles, along with prompting, checking, correction, and continuous affirmation, effectively encouraged active student participation in collaborative note construction. Note making activities helped students develop their awareness of vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, and how texts are organized. This study provides both theoretical and practical insights by showing how systematic R2L note making can strengthen and improve literacy skills in EFL settings.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate roasting as an interactive humor genre by examining differences in exchange structures and evaluation strategies between male and female comedians. The study employed two interpersonal systems of discourse semantics from Systemic Functional Linguistics—Negotiation and Appraisal. The data were drawn from an Indonesian political-themed roasting show featuring two comedians delivering humor related to Indonesian presidential election issues. The findings revealed several key results. First, roasting as a comedic genre can be realized through either immediate or delayed success, where joke effectiveness is indicated by different evaluative responses. Failure in delivering jokes is indicated by audience silence. Second, there are differences in the choice of evaluation strategies between male and female comedians. The male comedian tended to use a direct emotional strategy targeting concrete subjects, which resulted in more immediate comedic success. In contrast, the female comedian employed an analytical and layered strategy that produced more sophisticated humor, although it carried a higher risk of failure. These differences highlight distinct gendered approaches to comedic performance and humor construction

Abstract

This study examines the state-funded BIPA textbooks by applying Kress and van Leeuwen's (2021) visual grammar and Unsworth's (2006) typology of intersemiosis patterns to identify how verbal and visual modes construct curricular objectives and instructions. The dataset comprised the Sahabatku Indonesia Level 1 and Level 2 textbooks, published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture for novice and elementary foreign learners of Indonesian. The analysis was conducted in two stages. It firstly mapped verbal and visual elements according to their pedagogical roles across 20 units (10 per level). It then categorized their relationships as interrelated, complementary, or integrated. Findings reveal that interrelated relations dominate peripheral sections (cover, pre-activity, cultural insight), while integrated relations characterise core instructional sections where visual and verbal modes are functionally interdependent. Across levels, visual density decreases and modality shifts from cartoon-style illustrations toward realistic photographs, reflecting systematic scaffolding withdrawal. However, writing sections lack adequate multimodal scaffolding for modelling and joint construction. The study demonstrates that the multimodal design of the Sahabatku Indonesia series is systematically structured yet unevenly realised across language skills, with writing sections requiring the most significant compositional improvement.

Abstract

Implementing translingual practices that involve foreign, national, and local languages in EFL classrooms remains challenging for many EFL teachers. Close observation of teachers’ actual classroom implementation is thus necessary to better understand how such practices are enacted. This study aims to show how translingual practice is done by a teacher using a local dialect and how different languages construct meaning during her teaching in the classroom interactions. The study employed a qualitative approach to examine the teacher’s translingual practice, specifically using Canagarajah’s (2013) negotiation strategies. The participants were thirty Grade 7 students and an English teacher at a public junior high school in the Brebes District. The data were drawn from three lessons of classroom interactions before the final-year assessment. The results showed that the teacher used English, Indonesian, Javanese, and Javanese in Brebes Dialect to support the students’ EFL learning. They are used for constructing meaning in classroom interactions by elaborating Envoicing, Recontextualization, and Interaction negotiation strategies.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian local perfume advertisements on Instagram construct visual meaning using Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar framework. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes 25 Instagram posts (53 images in total) from three Indonesian perfume brands, focusing on representational, interactional, and compositional dimensions. The findings indicate that perfume advertisements predominantly foreground the product through a combination of narrative and conceptual representations, indirect audience positioning, and visually salient composition. This study shows that visual grammar plays a key role in shaping how advertising messages are structured and interpreted within the visually driven context of Instagram.

Abstract

Social media has changed how public policy issues are communicated to young, English-proficient audiences, yet few studies explain how alternative English-language media reconstruct domestic policy discourse. This study focuses on What Is Up, Indonesia? (WIUI), an Instagram alternative media account that discusses Indonesian public policy issues in English for diaspora audiences, international school students, and English-proficient Generation Z/millennial readers specifically, it analyzes the account's verbal and visual strategies in framing the Free Nutritious Meal program. Using a qualitative-descriptive design, this case study examines the verbal and visual strategies by using Discursive News Values Analysis and visual grammar respectively. The data were drawn on a purposively collected carousel corpus (September 2025) focusing on the news about the Free Nutritious Meal Program. The results in verbal strategies indicate negativity as the most dominant news value constructed through pejorative lexicons, evaluative language, and emotional references. This negativity is legitimized through actor fame and source authority. The visual strategies indicate that representational meaning shifts between conceptual symbolism and vectorial narrative, while compositionally maximum salience through green highlights consistently directs attention to data and authority failures. The study suggests that there is a typical model of public policy recontextualization as a cross-lingual multimodal practice in citizen journalism which integrates meme aesthetics and data-driven reporting for English speaking generation Z and Millennials audiences.
