Abstract

Many students find it difficult to learn mathematics. This is partly due to the view that mathematics is far from real-life and culture. Whereas, in real life, mathematics is very closely related to the reality of life, one of which is culture. In Lampung's culture, mathematics is presented in many ways such as buildings and others. This research was conducted to increase awareness that the concept of mathematics is very close and related to the cultural value of the community through the exploration of the ethnomathematics concept which has been practiced by the Lampung community, especially on Tapis and traditional houses. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the concept of Tapis and traditional houses of Lampung have used the concept of mathematics, such as a flat structure. The concept of mathematics in Lampung cultural values is expected to be used as a source of learning mathematics in school as well as being expected to increase students' love for local culture.

Abstract

Mathematics learning at MTs Ma'arif 02 Kotagajah still relies on textbooks. As a result, students' performance in quadrilateral and triangle material is low, and their learning motivation is lacking. This research aims to develop ethnomathematics-based video teaching materials using cultural objects from Lampung—such as traditional houses, tapis cloth motifs, floor patterns and movements of the Sigeh Pengunten dance, and the shape of the Siger Tower—to help students better understand the concepts of quadrilaterals and triangles. The study evaluates the materials in terms of their validity and practicality. This research is classified as research and development (R&D). It follows the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. During the Implementation stage, only a limited trial was conducted. The instruments used in this study included validation questionnaires completed by media and material experts to assess validity, and a student response questionnaire to assess practicality. The results show that the quality of the developed product falls into the "very feasible" category. This is supported by an average score of 3.38 from the material expert and 3.45 from the media expert. In terms of practicality, based on the responses of nine students, the product falls into the "very practical" category with an average score of 3.58.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore mathematical concepts embedded in six traditional cultural objects and to examine how these concepts can contribute to contextual mathematics learning through an ethnomathematical perspective. Method: This research employed a qualitative ethnomathematical approach to identify mathematical elements contained in selected cultural artifacts. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature analysis of six traditional cultural objects. Each object was examined to identify implicit mathematical structures, including geometric forms, symmetry, spatial relationships, numerical patterns, and proportional reasoning. The analysis focused on interpreting how these mathematical ideas are represented within the design, structure, and functional aspects of the cultural objects. Findings: The results reveal that the six cultural objects contain various mathematical concepts such as geometric shapes, symmetry, measurement, patterns, and proportional relationships. These concepts are reflected in the structural composition, decorative motifs, and spatial arrangements found within the artifacts. The analysis demonstrates that cultural objects can represent mathematical ideas in a concrete and meaningful way, making them relevant resources for mathematics learning. Significance: This study provides evidence that cultural artifacts contain valuable mathematical knowledge that can support culturally responsive mathematics education. The findings highlight the potential of ethnomathematics to bridge cultural knowledge and formal mathematics learning, thereby enhancing students’ conceptual understanding while fostering appreciation for local cultural traditions.
