Abstract

Allergy is a change of reaction or bodys defense response to substances that are actually harmless. An estimated 10-20% of the population had been or are suffering from the disease. The purpose of this study was to thoroughly observe allergic patients on Allergy Clinic Immanuel Hospital Bandung from January 2013–January 2014 based on allergen, clinical sign, age and gender. This study use descriptive methods with retrospective data retrieval from medical record. We gathered 206 skin prick test (SPT) results and found that the highest incidence of allergy was between 31-40 years (22.33%), 64.54% were women, 43.20% of patients with dermatitis as the major clinical signs, 70.59% of patients allergic to house dust mite as a common environmental allergens, 24.84% of patients allergic to shrimp as the most common food allergens. In conlusion, allergic patients with SPT positive common at the age of 31-40 years, women, Dermatitis as a major clinical signs. The most common environmental allergens that cause allergy was house dust mite. The most common food allergens that cause allergy was shrimp. Keywords: allergy, dermatitis, Immanuel Hospital Bandung, skin prick test

Abstract

THE EFFECT OF MUSIC BACH’S WORKS ON COGNITION FUNCTION: ATTENTION AND SHORT-TERM MEMORYABSTRACTIntroduction: A student who has a myriad of activities on and off campus, besides being required to have the ability to manage time efficiently, they are also required to have a good cognitive function, especially for academic activities. Many factors can interfere with learning activities, including attention problems and difficulty remembering. Some studies say that Bach’s rhythmic and soft music influences the ability to absorb information and remember.Aims: Knowing the effect of listening to Bach’s music on attention and short-term memory. Methods: The study design was experimented with pre- and post-test designs. This research  was conducted on 30 student choir members who met the research criteria. The measured data are the time needed to write the Stroop test correctly and the number of words that can be remembered from the memory recall test before and after listening to Bach’s music “Largo Ma Non Tanto”. Statistical analysis used paired parametric t test and Wilcoxon nonparametric test with a significance limit of 5% (p<0.05).Results: The average Stroop test was faster in the post-test (17.56±3.82 seconds) than at the pre-test (20.25±3.66 seconds), with a p value <0.01 and the average recall memory test at at the post-test (14.13±1.43), compared to the pre-test (11.93±2.30), with p<0.01.Discussion: Bach’s “Largo Ma Non Tanto” improves attention and short-term memory.

Abstract

Metabolic abnormalities caused by the accumulation of human, environmental, genetic and lifestyle variables can be found in diabetes mellitus (DM). An increase in blood glucose carried on by a reduction in insulin production can also result in DM. Insulin resistance often occurs as a result of obesity and a lack of physical activity and aging. Telang flower extract (Clitoria ternatea L.) is reported to have several qualities such as being able to treat DM, chronic bronchitis, goiter, mucosal disorders and leprosy. This study’s objective was to elucidate anti-dibetic effect of C. ternatea extract (CTE) in rats with diabetic complications related to dyslipidemia. Rats suffering from diabetes will be examined after being given oral doses of Simvastatin 0.9 mg/kg BW, Glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg BW, and 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW CTE, model induced by streptozotocin. The expression of the insulin gene (INS-1) was investigated by qRTPCR, Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α), and Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) pancreatic DM rats model using the Immunohistochemistry (IHC) test. Both descriptive and quantitative data were acquired for the data. After utilizing ANOVA to evaluate quantitative data, the Tukey post hoc test was used to analyze the data, the expression of TNF-α and IL-1β was found to decrease while INS-1 expression increased in response to CTE. This effect was attributed to the modulation of TNF-α, IL-1β, and INS-1 expression. These findings suggest that CTE possesses antidiabetic properties.

Abstract

Aging is influenced by several factors, including Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). An imbalance of higher ROS and lower antioxidants may lead to oxidative stress in cells that is manifested as wrinkles, dark spots, and fine lines. Antioxidants can prevent the effects of ROS. Safe and abundant sources of antioxidants can come from natural ingredients. One of the natural ingredients widely studied is Clitoria ternatea flower extract (CFE). This study aims to report the CFE potential as an anti-aging and antioxidant agent. Gallic acid and quercetin standards were used to measure the total flavonoid and phenolic content. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by hydroxyl (OH) and Nitric Oxide (NO) scavenging, while anti-aging activity was evaluated by collagenase and elastase inhibition tests. CFE showed high phenol and flavonoid content (14.49 μg GAE/mg and 9.00 μg QE/mg). CFE also has OH and NO scavenging activity with IC50 18.39 and 31.11 μg/mL, which exhibited antioxidant potential. CFE also showed potential to inhibit collagenase (IC50 = 177.48 μg/mL) and inhibit elastase (IC50 = 30.88 μg/mL). CFE may serve as a promising candidate with antioxidant and anti-aging properties.
