The development of New Yogyakarta International Airport is expected to increase the number of inbound tourists. The inbound tourists will bring their cultures into contact with the local culture. A contact between global and local cultures has potential to cause cultural shock and change of values to the local community. Consequently, the local community needs to be aware of the adverse effect of cultural contact, such as the vulnerability of the local values and identity to the hegemony of global culture and identity. Multiculturalism with proper understanding may reduce the adversity the local community faces and in the long run strengthen their local identity and values. Cultivating multicultural understanding can be initiated at the grassroot level among youth by means of exposure to cases of cultural contact. Community engagement program applying simulation is a better model to to build multicultural competence among youth since it brings a closer-to-reality contact situation that stimulates sensible responses to cultural contact.===================================================================Pembangunan New Yogyakarta International Airport diharapkan akan meningkatkan jumlah kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara ke Yogyakarta dan daerah-daerah sekitarnya.

AbstractThe rapid development of technology triggers attitudes and behaviors of consumerism. The two things have a cause and effect relationship that cause multiple pressures on the environment in the form of resource exploitation to support innovation, and waste from innovation products of short use duration to meet consumer desires. Therefore, it is necessary to be aware of consumerism behavior that is triggered by the innovation of various technology products and their impact on the environment. With this awareness, it is expected that the community can develop a wise and environmentally friendly lifestyle as an effort to reduce the rate of exploitation of natural resources and increase the uncontrolled waste of technological innovation products. The interdisciplinary approach by combining cultural sciences and psychology provides a formulation of conceptual and practical solutions to environmental problems due to consumerism that is increasingly rampant both in urban and rural areas. This interdisciplinary approach applied in the community service program for the labor force group provides sustainable benefits because it increasingly empowers this group in disseminating wise and environmentally friendly lifestyles to the living environment and work environment.-----------AbstrakPerkembangan teknologi yang pesat memicu sikap dan perilaku konsumerisme.

The present article attempts to describe the shifting use of formal and informal styles in usage instruction discourse of food, beverage, and pharmaceutical products in Japanese. The aim is to explain the background of style-shifting from a formal style, indicated by -desu in adjectives and nouns and -masu in verbs, into an informal style without any -desu or –masu forms in place. The background is reviewed through the perspectives of both sociolinguistics and pragmatics. The data were collected from various food, beverage, and pharmaceutical product packages containing usage instructions in Japanese. Study results indicate that style-shifting does not only occur through spoken language (orally) but via written discourse, which maintains unchanging external factors or definite contexts. Style-shifting is not only affected by the status of the speech partner but also more likely affected by the content of the information delivered to the consumers. Aside from occurring within a single discourse, style-shifting is also observed at a narrower level, namely within one element of discourse conveying a relatively homogenous information.

This study used qualitative descriptive for analyzing cultural presuppositions and translation strategies. The data used are utterances that contain cultural presuppositions found in the Game of Thrones television series season 1. This study shows that four types of sub-systems of cultural presupposition were found such as techno-economic, social, and linguistic system. The ideational system in the form of religion, ideology, values, ideas dominate the most compared to other sub-systems. Existential presupposition is the most frequent presupposition which appear followed with factive presupposition. Meanwhile, the translation strategy that frequently used is literal translation followed by borrowing and transposition translation strategy. This study emphasizes that some cultural words such as those belonging to the linguistic sub-system, in their translation to target language require an understanding of the cultural concept of the source language adapted to the cultural concept of target language.

Mass media plays an important role in our lives and society to a greater degree. As a primary source of information that people tend to go for, the kind of information mass media provides matters. The problem is that every message we see in the media is constructed and that even texts like news reports are not entirely authentic. Previous studies have shown that news media do have their own tendency in writing their news reports, through which the minority communities are usually the ones to receive the short end of the stick. On that account, this study, through conducting critical discourse analysis, attempts to see the media framing in Mauree Turner’s 2020 Oklahoma state legislative election news reports and find an underlying motive behind such framing. The finding shows that in general, the media framed Turner positively in their reports and that this positive frame implies an inherent gender bias and religious discrimination within American society.

Colonization is a process of the colonizer who dominates the colonized people. The colonizer applies their rules to the colonized people. Colonized people unconsciously act these rules, copying the culture of colonizer people who were considered superior, showing their inferiority feelings to their original culture which is considered inferior, or even copying the colonizer's way of life. Imitating is a way to escape their repressed situation. The objectives of this research are: 1) to describe the scene of cultural identities of mimicry portrayed by Jay Gatsby in the film The Great Gatsby using Homi K. Bhabha's perspective, and 2) to explore the scene of cultural identities of hybridity portrayed by Jay Gatsby. This paper can be categorized into library research and applies the descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through words, phrases, and sentences of events contained in The Great Gatsby Movie. The findings are: first, Jay Gatsby mimics the colonial culture and tried to apply it in his life. Second, the personality of Gatsby is a blend: a mixture of two different cultures is said to be a hybrid, and his personality is dominated by an eternal struggle.

The current article discusses a linguistic phenomenon, particularly, the use of bikago beautified style, which has been classified as being separate from teineigo since 2007. The discussion covers the forms of this particular linguistic style and the background of its emergence. This research was conducted because, to date, Japanese language studies pertaining to this specific style mostly consisted of researches that are based on spoken data analysis. This is a descriptive-qualitative study. Data were collected from instruction labels of food, beverage, and pharmaceutical products in Japanese provided on the packages of relevant products. Data were gathered based on the content of bikago style element found within a speech. Speeches that do not contain any bikago style element were not included as research data. Research results shows that the number of bikago terms being used on relevant products is very scarce, only consisting of a few words, yet they are distributed in various elements of usage instruction discourse.

On Instagram, Teenagers’ captions in English do not always describe the picture but symbolically express their feelings to their friends as a whole. In this case, English captions enhance status and authority and reveal the attitudinal evaluation related to feelings and values. This paper aims to discuss the self-presentation between Indonesian female and male teenagers on their emotional, critical and evaluative stance reflecting on English captions on Instagram when the captions talk about friends and their relationship. Appraisal theory proposed by Martin and White to reveal the attitudinal evaluation is applied in this study. From 500 English captions, 90 captions deal with 155 appraising items about friends. They are 112 female appraised items and 43 male appraised items. Caption's screenshots are used to collect the data. The invoked attitude data are coded by examining posted photos. The result of the research is (1) male and female teenagers prefer to express their attitude by using inscribed attitude rather than invoked attitude, (2) male teenagers expresses moreattitude through Affect, while female teenagers express more through Judgment, (3) negative appraisal is to used to emphasize the positive values in the form of a counter concession, for male teenagers to highlight togetherness, while for female teenagers are more focused on empathy, (4) both female teenagers and male teenagers use negation to show a positive attitude related to judgment propriety (ethical Judgment). Therefore, writing captions on Instagram provide an opportunity for male and female teenagers to express their attitudes as they imagine to show their strength without physically confronting the interlocutor.
