Abstract

Abstract

Educational institutions around the world have closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic endangering the academic agendas. Educational institutions have to shift to online learning platforms to keep the educational activities working. Nonetheless, the questions about the educational leadership strategies and policies of online learning are not clearly understood yet, principally for a developing country like Indonesia, where the technical constrictions like access to the Internet have become a serious issue. In this study, we focused on finding out the leadership strategies and policies of the heads of the postgraduate study programs and looking at the entire cycle in the learning process by looking at the implementation and evaluation of the goals of online learning during the pandemic. The study design was qualitative in the case study approach. Seven participants were willing to get involved in this study. The primary data sources were in-depth interviews with seven participants who are the heads and secretary of the postgraduate program at one public university in Jambi. We examined our interviews data by using within-case and cross-case displays and analyses. We categorized our analysis and discussion about our participants’ perspectives and the contexts in which leadership strategies and policies of online learning they managed emerge. The analysis of our texts revealed that major issues related to the causes and covid-19: the rapid, unpredictable and 'forced' transition from face-to-face teaching to distance or online teaching, leadership strategies and policies in online learning, and evaluating teaching and learning processes: “assessing its achievements and improving upon its effectiveness.” Future education research and implications are also discussed.

Abstract

This study was aimed to explore EFL teachers' strategies in teaching reading comprehension through an e-learning platform at one public senior high school in Jambi. This study employed a qualitative research design which was a case study. The study utilized two data collection techniques: observation and interview. Two teachers of English were involved in this study. All of the data were analyzed using four significant stages of analysis: coding, data reduction, data display and concluding. The frequency of observations was grounded on reading teaching material taught by participants. This study revealed that the teachers used three strategies to teach reading comprehension through virtual e-learning. The strategies were translating, SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) and QARs (Question-Answer Relationships). The findings also revealed teachers' reasons for selecting those strategies. Generally, their reasons were (1) to help the students to comprehend the text and (2) to relate students' real-life experience and prior knowledge with the text. The time limitation of lesson hours caused by COVID 19 also affected teachers' decisions in selecting the strategies.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the perception of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students regarding the utility of TED Talks in improving their speaking proficiency. Through interviews and documentation analysis, the study addresses the central query: "How do EFL students perceive the use of TED Talks for enhancing speaking skills?" Findings reveal a positive consensus among participants, indicating that TED Talks serve as a valuable resource for honing speaking abilities. The research highlights that TED Talks stimulate students' enthusiasm for speaking practice, with a preference for engagement during TED Talks sessions over conventional speaking exercises. However, certain challenges such as limited mobile phone access, constrained internet packages, and poor signal conditions hinder optimal utilization of TED Talks. Despite these obstacles, EFL students perceive TED Talks as conducive to speaking skill development, evidenced by observed enhancements in their speaking proficiency. This study underscores the potential of TED Talks as an effective tool for fostering English speaking skills among EFL learners.

Abstract

This paper investigates how Indonesian English language and science teachers in Jambi municipality perceive the relationship between national identity and local culture in English and Science teaching. Through thematic analysis, the study explores teachers’ understanding toward the role of national identity in English and Science teaching as well as the challenges and strategies teachers encounter in integrating national identity into their teaching practices by the inclusion of local culture, emphasizing the importance of Jambi cultural context in the teaching. The research results reveal a number of findings such as teachers’ beliefs that exploring national identity in the classroom can help students develop a sense of belonging and awareness of their place in a multicultural world. However, they express varying degrees of emphasis on national identity, with some advocating for a bigger portion of context of local culture, while others may prioritize students’ development of English mastery no matter what culture is embedded. Teachers also report challenges and strategies employed, for instance the conduction of collaborative learning to help students learn from each other’s perspectives, designing inclusive teaching materials to include diverse perspectives of national identity, and enhancing teachers’ understanding of cultural sensitivity and identity issues. To conclude, it is recommended to build adequate support for a balanced English and Science teaching designs that respect and celebrate national identity while, at the same time, be able to prepare students for global engagement. By fostering the integration of local and global perspectives, English and Science education in Indonesia will be able to create English and Science teaching environment that empowers students as both national and global citizens.
