Abstract

This study aims to reveal deeper and different meaning of an inanimate object, specifically umbrella, from naked eye's perspective in The Blue Umbrella Film. The Blue Umbrella Film, an animated short film directed by Saschka Unsled, employs inanimate objects as the characters as seen through the distinct human's facial expression painted on the black, blue, and red umbrellas To pursue the aim of this study, qualitative method was conducted together with Saussure's semiotic theory. The results showed that the black umbrellas signified as the majorities, while the blue and red umbrellas signified as the minorities. The black umbrellas also signified as a group of office workers as well as members of Sexual and Gender Majority. On the other hand, the blue and the red umbrellas signified as the members of Sexual and Gender Minority.  In short, the movie highlights an encouraging message that it  is  okay  to  be different from the majority's choice.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of women in the mass media in a movie Under the Silver Lake (2018). This study used a qualitative method and Saussure’s semiotic theory to analyze women in the mass media in the movie, particularly on the connection between the portrayal of women and its meaning based on social conception. There are two types of mass media in the movie that are analyzed: print ads and magazines. The first focuses on the 1969 Tipalet print ads, and the second is from the 1970 Playboy magazine. The findings indicate that women in mass media are not merely portrayed as models or figures to promote a product. Instead mass media is inclined to use their portrayal as a medium to promote the ideas of women objectification. The portrayal of women in those mass media; thus, they often appear objectified, exploited, and undervalued. They are depicted in their most sexual appearance, which does not account for them as equal human beings. Such portrayals of women in conventional mass media provide the most harmful and unequal representation of women.

Abstract

This study aims to examine objects as symbols in Opal (2020). It is one of the animations that applied inanimate objects as symbols to support its theme. This animation delves into the theme of child neglect inside of a dysfunctional family and it uses cigarettes, mirrors, and pills as symbols to deliver the theme. To understand this utilization of symbols, Saussure’s semiotics theory signifier and signified is applied. By employing the semiotics theory, researchers found out that those objects are signifiers that signified ignorant, narcissistic, and abusive human behavior. Cigarettes symbolizes the  ignorant  grandfather  who is  an  active  smoker  despite  of  his health problem; mirrors symbolize the narcissistic father who is excessively obsessed with himself regardless of the harmful things he has done; pills symbolize the abusive mother who abuses her drug use just like how she abuses her daughter for her own pleasure. Therefore, this animation successfully applied objects as symbols that symbolize human behavior to support the theme of child neglect and give the impression how such harmless things can lead to bigger problems that cause harm to ourselves and others.
