Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction is a common procedure in dentistry after which the residual ridge will no longer receive stimulus leading to volume, height and width loss. These anatomical changes can then result in difficulties with future denture fabrication and implant placement. Preservation of the alveolar ridge, therefore, assumes considerable importance after tooth extraction. Moringa oleifera, on the other hand, can enhance bone formation. Type-1 collagen is a marker of osteoblast formation. Purpose: This research aimed to analyze the effects of Moringa oleifera leaf extract combined with DFBBX on type-1 collagen expressions in tooth extraction sockets. Methods: 56 Cavia cobaya subjects were divided into eight groups. Their lower left incisors were then extracted prior to the sockets of the first and fifth groups being filled with PEG, those of the second and sixth groups with DFBBX, those of the third and seventh groups with Moringa oleifera leaf extract and a combination of DFBBX and Moringa oleifera leaf extract in those of the fourth and eighth groups. The sockets were then examined on days 7 and 30 by means of an immunohistochemical technique. The data collected was subsequently subjected to analysis by One Way Anova and Tukey HSD tests. Results: There were significant differences between the control group and the treatment group administrated with Moringa oleifera leaf extract combined with DFBBX. On days 7 and 30, the groups treated with the combination of DFBBX and Moringa oleifera leaf extract had the highest number of type-1 collagen expressions. Conclusion: A combination of DFBBX and Moringa oleifera leaf extract is effective in increasing type-1 collagen expressions in tooth extraction sockets.

Abstract

Background: During the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic, many people were afraid to go to the dentist, which affected their dental and oral health conditions. Dental cavities may hamper children's growth and development; if this condition continues, it will affect the children's dietary intake, which may impact their quality of life and, if allowed to, cause stunting. Although in this condition, we still have to take preventive precautions with dental health education in school-age children. This required increasing dental health knowledge and understanding of dental disorders, particularly. Purpose: To describe oral and dental health knowledge improved following dental health education at Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School, which is located in Pucang, Surabaya City, East Java. Methods: Two surveyors were responsible for data collecting. This study's sample size was 105 people ranging from third to fifth grade. The seminar covered dental and oral health via a hybrid method. The participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire form for the pre-and post-test to determine the improvement of oral and dental health knowledge for the dental health education evaluation. Results: Most oral and dental health participants understood the presentation on oral and dental health education. The post-test percentage was higher (89.14%) than the pre-test rate (60.29%). Conclusion: The program findings demonstrated that oral and dental health education with a hybrid method effectively increased elementary school children's understanding of dental and oral health status.

Abstract

Background: The use of plants for medicinal purposes continues to expand rapidly across the world. Up to 80% of the world's population is estimated to rely heavily on herbal medicines for their primary health care. Graptophyllum pictum leaves (GPL) have long been used as herbal medicine for several diseases or health conditions. However, until now, there have been only limited studies regarding laboratory experiments and the pharmacological effects of GPL. Purpose: To summarize the phytopharmacology aspect of GPL used for medical and dental purposes. Review(s): Based on the 36 articles included, GPL is widely used in medicine and dentistry, such as for treatment of hemorrhoids, periodontitis, and candidiasis, due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifungal properties. However, the current research study designs are still in vitro and in vivo experiments. Continuing experiments and clinical tests are needed to explore the essential use of the GPL. Conclusion: GPL can be used for medical and dental purposes due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

Abstract

Background: Immediate complete overdentures are designed for placement denture immediately following the extraction or decapitation of natural teeth. This procedure overcome the challenges associated of esthetic problems, including functional difficulties and psychological issues. Purpose: The article aims to highlight the advantages of endodontic-prosthodontic approach through immediate overdenture, such as the preservation of alveolar bone and improvement in patient’s psychological well-being and quality of life. Case: A 60-years-old female came into Universitas Airlangga Dental Hospital with the chief complaint of missing multiple teeth with upper front teeth becoming loose and desire to replace them because of difficulty in chewing food. Case Management: Diagnostic impressions were taken using irreversible hydrocolloid material, then poured in the dental stone to create final impression. The treatment plan included endodontic treatment, scaling and root planning for 11. The vertical dimension of occlusion was established using a bite rim and mounted on an articulator. Then, the immediate overdenture was created by arranging artificial teeth. Before the denture insertion, 11 was decapitated and filled the orifice with glass ionomer cement. Extraction of 21, 22, 23 was carried out and after ensuring hemostasis, the immediate overdenture was inserted. To finalize the denture insertion, occlusion was assessed using articulating paper. Control was done after day 1,3 and 7 after denture insertion. Conclusion: This case report describes the effectiveness of immediate overdentures as a valuable treatment option through endodontic-prosthodontic approach. By providing a functional and aesthetic solution while minimizing the edentulous period, immediate dentures significantly enhance patient’s quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health education is conducted with the aim of changing the habits of a person, group of people, or society so they can gain knowledge, attitudes, and habits to behave in a healthy way in the field of dental and oral health. Elementary school age is the right time for teachers to introduce and instill healthy living habits. A dental and oral health education for Little Doctor students is assumed to help improve the dental and oral health of other students, teachers, and other staff of the school, as well as the people around the student outside of school. Purpose: To describe the effect of interactive dental health education on knowledge improvement. Methods: This study’s sample size was 31 Little Doctor students in the third through sixth grades. The activity in general adopted two-way communication; interactive speaking was performed to stimulate the students attentiveness to the topics, allowing students to engage with the speakers. To assess the students’ knowledge level of oral and dental health, a pre-test questionnaire was filled out prior to starting, and the same questionnaire was filled out as a post-test after completing all the agenda. Results: There were significant differences between pre-test and post-test results (P-value < 0.05), with the mean rank of the post-test group (45.56%) being significantly higher than the pre-test group (17.44%). Conclusion: The interactive education method in elementary school was found to be efficacious and more preferable as it matches the level of growth and development in school-age children.

Abstract

Background: Poor bone quality, sometimes caused by osteoporosis, can lead to dental implant failure. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) can differentiate into osteoblasts and offer an alternative therapy for poor bone conditions. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effect of hUCMSCs induction on the extent of osseointegration by the new bone formation area of dental implants in osteoporotic animal models. Methods: The samples were divided into two groups, i.e., control and induced hUCMSCs groups at different times. An ovariectomy was performed to assess the osteoporosis condition. The control group was injected using gelatin, and the treatment group was administered hUCMSCs. Terminations were conducted at 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. The collected samples were then subjected to histological examination to analyze new bone formation and its proportion. In addition, alkaline phosphatase staining was also performed to evaluate the mineralization area. The data was analyzed using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Both for new bone formation area as well as the proportion of new bone, it was observed that the best results were in the group with induction of hUCMSCs at 2 weeks. Alkaline phosphatase staining also confirmed that the highest mineralization was observed in the same group. Conclusion: hUCMSCs induced new bone formation in the implant placement in osteoporotic animal models.
