The research design is pre-experimental research with one group pre-test – treatment – post-test design. The sample of the research was 30 students VIII 1 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by giving the writing test about recount text (pre-test and post-test) to the students. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of posttest was higher than the mean score of pretest (60.05 > 53.72). The value of t-test was 12.441 while the value of t-table in significance level 5% df = 29 was 2.045. Since the value of the t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that Alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Abstract: The research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Rengat with a purpose of examining the effect of storytelling technique in enhancing the students speaking skills. The method used in executing the research was pre-experimental design, specifically one-group pre-test post-test design. The tenth grade students that include 32 students were taken as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The procedures in conducting the research were started by delivering the pre-test, followed by applying the treatment, and then deploying the post-test as the last step. The treatment was conducted by teaching with storytelling method through an online platform (Zoom). The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the pre-test is 67.5 and the average score of the post-test is 85.5. Moreover, the value of the t-test is higher than the t-table (8.44 > 1.670), which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, whereas the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The difference between the mean score of the pre-test and the post-test as well as the hypothesis testing result clearly point out that there is a significant effect of storytelling in improving the students speaking skills.Key Words: Speaking, Speaking Skills, Storytelling.

Abstract

Conducting an assessment is a part of teachers' roles and responsibilities. Assessment is a process by which teachers can get feedback for their teaching and students' learning. It can provide data about teachers' teaching effectiveness as well students' learning progress and achievement. Among many alternative authentic assessments suggested in the latest 2013 Curriculum, the portfolio is one of the recommended types of assessment used by teachers at schools lately. However, the reality shows that this portfolio assesment is not used effectively yet in the field. Instead, many teachers still rely on some kinds of traditional tests to assess students' learning. This paper discusses theoretical foundations of this portfolio assessment, followed by a discussion on how to make use of it in the field. Some challenges and possible solutions are also addressed in this paper.
