Abstract

The covid 19 pandemic has led the Indonesian government to carry out distant learning. This study aims to give an overview of a potential Instagram platform that can be used in teaching writing for ESP university students during the pandemic. Besides, social media is part of technology advancement to improve students' motivation and the efficacy of learning a language (Nugroho & Rahmawati, 2020). The present study sheds light on the effect of the use of Instagram on ESP students writing ability. The pre-experimental research will be conducted in eight meetings, including the writing pre-test and post-test. The students will be assigned to write a descriptive essay using Instagram as the instructional medium. Moreover, a questionnaire will be given to reveal their perceptions toward the use of Instagram to practice writing. The finding of this study is expected to provide a significant contribution to the realm of English for specific purposes (ESP) teaching in Indonesia.

Abstract

GenPI is the implementation of the "go digital" tourism promotion program that is being intensively carried out by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia as one of Indonesia's tourism marketing strategies, including in West Sulawesi. Instagram content writing training for GenPI administrators is an effort to advance tourism with the hope that promotions through the @genpi_sulbar account will be maximized and have a broader reach to foreign countries. This activity contains 1) forum group discussion; 2) provision of creative writing material; 3) human resource management and social media marketing material; 4) descriptive text and structure material; 5) vocabulary games; 6) introduction to deepl, grammarly and quillbot and 7) mentoring that will always be done through WhatsApp groups and zoom meetings. Based on the results of the Community Service activities that have been carried out, the following conclusions are obtained: 1) partners understand how human resource management and social media marketing, in this case, tourism promotion; 2) Partners understand how the creative process in writing, which includes how to find writing ideas, plan, edit, draft and publish; 3) Partners understand descriptive text material and descriptive text writing structure, 4) Addition of English vocabulary for partners; 5) Partners understand how to use deepl, quillbot and grammarly 6) Partners can write English Instagram captions as tourism promotions.

Abstract

Theprogramof gamifies fabulor learning using mentimeter was supporting the students and teachers’ skill and creativity in designing IT-Based learning. The method employed utilizied the fabulous learning with Mentimeter. Based on the outcomes of the initial community empowerment activities, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) participants demonstrated high interest and motivation in learning English and actively participated in English lessons through applications like Mentimeter, Duolingo, Memrise, Quizlet, Quizizz, Kahoot, and Quizwhizzer; 2) participants developed an understanding of using Mentimeter synchronized with gamified English learning to improve students’ vocabulary, speaking, and reading skills; 3) participants successfully applied IT-based English learning applications via Mentimeter, Duolingo, Memrise, Quizlet, Quizizz, Kahoot, and Quizwhizzer; 4) participants grasped the concept of enjoyable learning, which helped increase students’ interest and English language proficiency; and 5) participants were able to develop teaching modules in the form of gamified e-modules.

Abstract

Generasi Pesona Indonesia (GenPi) Sulawesi Barat yang tersebar di setiap kabupaten Kota menjadi representasi pariwisata sebagai pemandu wisata bagi wisatawan yang berkunjung baik lokal maupun mancanegara. Sayangnya, kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris sebagai bahasa internasional yang dimiliki oleh mitra masih sangat minim. Saat memandu wisatawan mancanegara, kadangkala mitra hanya menggunakan bahasa isyarat dan bantuan google terjemahan. Tim pengabdian memberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris selama 2 hari berupa tour guide untuk peningkatan Speaking dan Listening dari penutur asing. Metode pengabdian ini menggunakan pre-experimental method dengan pre dan post test instrument dengan materi Got Talent, Fun English, Simple Present Tense for Speaking and Asking Direction, serta Role Play menjadi Tour Guide. Capaian kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan yang dirasakan oleh mitra mengenai kemampuan bahasa inggris mereka. Hal ini juga ditunjukkan melalui pre test dan post test yang telah diberikan berupa Pemberdayaan dan peningkatan keterampilan mitra dalam berbicara bahasa inggris khususnya ketika menjadi pemandu wisata.

Abstract

The government has taken policy by circular letter number 4 2020 about the implementation of educational policies in the emergency period of the Covid-19. It means all of the learning processes are conducted from home or it called distance learning (PJJ). Unfortunately, not all school can implement online learning due to internet connection limitation. SMP Negeri 3 Totikum, Banggai Kepulauan is one of an example. The school that did not have an internet connection conducted the learning process by distributing modules and apply self-study to all the students. This causes the learning motivation of students were decrease. In learning activities, motivation is needed to improve students' enthusiasm for learning so that learning activities can run well. This research aims to highlightthe impact of home visits on students’ motivation of the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Totikum in learning English during Pandemic Covid-19. This research method used qualitative approach. The data collection was processed by questionnaire. The result show that almost students the Eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Totikum were strongly and agree with that statements that shows the indicators of motivation. In conclusion,home visit can give impact on students’ motivation in learning English, specially in the school or area that did not have an internet connection

Abstract

The Muhammadiyah University of Mamuju has been using LMS since the beginning of the pandemic, called SIMAK UNIMAJU. Learning processed can be accessed with an internet connection via mobile phones, notebooks, or by visiting internet cafes. In face-to-face learning after the pandemic, University lectures of ESP need to rethink student motivation strategies). This study combines the talking stick learning method and SIMAK UNIMAJU LMS technology in teaching reading. The objective of the research are the talking stick combine LMS Simak Unimaju improve the students ability, create students activity in acquiring intellectual skills and attitudes besides motor skills. Mix method design applied by using triangulation by one group pre-test and post-test design. The quantitative data were obtained by students' scores in English reading pre-test and post-test of recount text. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained from classroom observation and interviews. The study was conducted at Class F Management Students in Universitas Muhammadiyah Mamuju, which involved 24 students. The findings showed that the hypothesis testing proved that t count ≥ ttable 14,29 ≥ 1.714. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. It means using LMS and the talking stick method could improve students' ability in English reading comprehension. Another finding also showed that students' responses were positive. They responded that combining LMS and talking sticks is more enjoyable, motivating them to study. Furthermore, it helps them understand recount text and LMS combine talking stick method could be applied as one of the teaching readings to be implemented in the following semester.

Abstract

Background. The urgency of this research is developing an interactive media HOTS e-book based on the local wisdom in West Sulawesi. It is collaborative and participatory of interactive media HOTS e-book will improve interest in learning and motivate ESP students to master English skills. Purpose. The purpose of this research is to improve English language skills students orally and in writing, develop learning media with Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) combined with local knowledge of West Sulawesi. Method. The method of R&D was applied by using the DDDE (Decide, Design, Develop, and Evaluate) model which was chosen to develop this HOTS interactive e-book for ESP learners based on local wisdom at West Sulawesi. The small-scale trial of the HOTS E-book was carried out by experts of teacher, lecturers and also a large-scale trial was carried out by 46 students. The test subject was determined using the purposive sampling technique. The collecting research is carried out by providing questionnaire tests that have been collected descriptively. Results. Results shows that the ESP interactive HOTS e-book based on local wisdom, developed using the DDD-E model, meets the validity criteria with an average score of 3.89, is deemed practical with an average score of 3.67, and shows the effectiveness with 86.8% from the score test results of the ESP students at Unimaju. Conclusion. The ESP interactive HOTS e-book based on local wisdom in West Sulawesi, developed using the DDD-E model, is valid, practical, and effective. It equips lecturers and other educators with innovative tools to enhance critical literacy and critical thinking and promoting better learning outcomes for the local culture of West Sulawesi.
