Abstract

Developments in all fields demand changes in learning, including at university level. Various skills for successful life in the future must be trained in students, including information literacy. This study aims to get an overview of students’ information literacy proficiency based on their experience during high school, the main source of information ever used, and the students’ perception of information literacy capacity. This study used a survey method, with an information literacy questionnaire distributed to 89 first-year students of the Biology Education Study Program, Universitas Tidar. The collected data were analyzed descriptively. Based on the results of the study it was found that students already had the experience of accessing information for completing assignments during high school. Information obtained by students is mainly obtained from Google and books. However, the use of Google as a search engine has not been directed towards finding quality sources. Students are still have low capacity in information literacy skills, especially those relating to the use of information effectively and ethically. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for establishing information literacy training programs in Biology Education Study Program Universitas Tidar, both integrated in the subjects and on their own.

Abstract

Antacids are weak bases that are used to treat gastrointestinal conditions caused by increased gastric acid secretion. Calcium carbonate is a common antacid (CaCO3). As is well known, the golden snail shell is almost entirely composed of calcium carbonate. As such, we tested the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content in the shell of the golden snail (Pomaceae canaliculata) as an antacid substance in this study. The study was conducted empirically in four stages: preparation, XRF test, XRD test, and antacid simulation test. As a result, the golden snail's shell (Pomaceae canaliculata) contains up to 50.4161 percent calcium oxide (CaO), which has the potential to be used as a starting material for calcium carbonate extraction (CaCO3). The XRD diffractogram at 500 degree celsius shows that pure CaCO3 was produced with a typical diffraction pattern at 2 theta: 26.16 degree and 27.12 degree. Additionally, it is well established that the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) found in gold snail shells can neutralize acid. However, additional research on the use of calcium carbonate in golden snail shells (Pomaceae canaliculata) as an antacid is necessary to determine the optimal dose for successful stomach acid neutralization.

Abstract

Evolution is considered the central and unifying theme of the discipline of Biology. Yet, some debates refusing the theory of evolution raise and lead to a problem in understanding the evolution process. This study aimed to examine the relationship between acceptance and understanding of the concept of evolution in pre-service biology teachers with solid religious and educational backgrounds. A correlational design was employed in this current study. The study subjects were students of the Biology Education Department of Universitas Islam Madura, which has implemented NOS (Nature of Science)-based learning. All subjects are Muslims, and 86.84% pursued their education in Islamic boarding schools. The data was measured using MATE (Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution) and ECK (Evolution Content Knowledge). The study’s findings indicate a significant relationship between acceptance and understanding of the concept of evolution. In addition, the acceptance of the concept of evolution contributed 63.6% towards the understanding. These findings suggest that acceptance of evolution is essential to understand it and that teaching evolution by implementing NOS-based learning is a necessary step to improve students’ acceptance and understanding of the concept of evolution.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning model conducted via online (e-PjBL) on the concept understanding of evaluation in the biology learning. A quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent pre-test and post-test group design is chosen in this study. The research is carried out at the Biology Education Study Program of Universitas Tidar in March - June 2021. A total of 63 college students become the sample in this research which are divided into experimental class and control class. The instrument used to collect the data is in the form of a concept understanding test about the evaluation of biology learning. Then, the results of the data are analyzed by quantitative. The results show that there is no difference in the use of online Project-Based Learning models on the concept understanding of evaluation in biology learning. This is indicated by the results of hypothesis test which is 0.184 > 0.05. Meanwhile, the average N-Gain in the experimental class is 0.2083 which belongs to the ineffective category. Next, several factors become obstacles to the online Project-Based Learning that causes this learning model to be ineffective.
