Abstract

Scaffold in the form of nanofibers in bone tissue engineering applications continues to be developed. In this study, nanofibers are composed of PVA/CS/HAp with characteristics that can support medical applications such as bone tissue engineering. Vacuum plasma treatment was carried out to modify the nanofiber surface. The results of the morphological analysis showed that the vacuum plasma treatment of oxygen gas caused the surface of the PVA/CS/HAp nanofibers to become rougher with a change in diameter. Before the oxygen gas vacuum plasma treatment, the diameter of the nanofiber had a range of 83–365 nm. After the oxygen gas vacuum plasma treatment, the diameter had a size range of 105–293 nm. Furthermore, the vacuum plasma treatment carried out showed increased hydrophilic properties. The average contact angle values before and after oxygen gas vacuum plasma treatment were (39.0 ± 0.0005)° and (10.3 ± 0.0005)°, respectively.DOI: 10.17977/um024v7i22022p108

Abstract

Among various types of energy storage, the supercapacitor is regarded as the most promising device due to its long cycling life, good cycling stability, and high power density. A supercapacitor is generally composed of electrodes, electrolytes, and a separator. The separator is one of the most important components, serving to prevent internal short circuits between the anode and the cathode. Herein, a nanostructured-based separator in a PAN/PVDF nanofiber scheme is introduced for improving the electrochemical performance of the supercapacitor. Briefly, the membranes were produced via the electrospinning technique. All of the raw materials were blended in various compositions of PVDF for optimization purposes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were carried out to identify the microstructure of the nanofibers. The electrochemical properties of the membrane were measured using galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD). Based on GCD, it was shown that the PAN/PVDF 20 wt% membrane exhibited the optimum gravimetric capacitance at 54.104 Fg-1 as evidenced by a high porosity percentage. Thus, the PAN/PVDF nanofiber has good potential as a separator for application in supercapacitors.

Abstract

Calcium is one of the essential minerals for the body, especially in the elderly and pregnant women. Using natural materials containing calcium is very important, especially natural materials that are only used as waste, such as watermelon rind. Watermelon rind has a calcium of 31 mg. Therefore, it is very efficient to be used. The manufacture of this osteoporosis drug does not refer to calcium from watermelon rind extract alone. However, it is supported by other herbal ingredients such as rhizomes (ginger, curcuma, turmeric, and fingerroot). The method of extracting calcium from watermelon rind used the destruction method. After being extracted, the extraction and some mixed with the rhizomes were tested, such as calcium levels, XRF, XRD, and FTIR tests. The result of the study showed that all samples were confirmed to have calcium. High calcium content of 13.30 percent was found in the watermelon rind extract sample from watermelon fruit measuring 6 kg mixed with rhizomes. All samples' calcium level test results had a dominant value of 495 ppm.DOI: 10.17977/um024v8i12023p001
