Abstract

This study comparatively examines the exegetical methodologies of Tafsir al-Kasyaf by al-Zamakhsyari and Anwar al-Tanzil wa Asrar al-Ta’wil by al-Baidhawi, while proposing a conceptual model of the methodological reconstruction employed by al-Baidhawi in responding to his predecessor’s interpretation. This library research employs a qualitative comparative-hermeneutical approach: the comparative dimension is operationalized through six indicators (linguistic structure, argumentation, use of transmitted reports, theological orientation, ta’wil technique, and use of hadith), while the philosophical-hermeneutical dimension draws on Palmer’s (1969) framework to read the methodological intent behind each exegete’s redactional choices. Primary data were drawn from the two classical commentaries; secondary data came from relevant literature on exegesis, Islamic theology, and scholarly articles. This study proposes a new conceptual model—built inductively from close reading rather than adopted as a fixed classical term—describing al-Baidhawi’s tahdzib strategy through three patterns: hadzaf (elimination), talwin (redactional modification), and ta’kid (theological reinforcement). The findings show that Tafsir al-Kasyaf is characterized by a rational-linguistic approach grounded in Mu’tazilite theology, while Anwar al-Tanzil integrates al-Zamakhsyari’s linguistic sophistication with Ash’arite theological principles and a more proportional use of transmitted reports. The relationship between the two works is not mere textual reproduction but a systematic process of tahdzib. As an exploratory model still grounded in two verses, these findings should be tested on a broader corpus of mutashabihat verses, yet they already indicate that Anwar al-Tanzil represents a methodological transformation enriching the classical Sunni exegetical tradition.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the thought of Fadhil Shalih al-Samarra’i, a contemporary scholar of Arabic linguistics and Qur’anic linguistic interpretation (at-ta‘bir alQur’ani), regarding the phenomenon of hadhf (ellipsis) in the Qur’an. The study addresses the limited systematic discussion of al-Samarra’i’s concept of hadhf by analyzing his understanding of ellipsis not merely as a grammatical feature of Arabic syntax and rhetoric, but as a means of revealing the precision and rhetorical excellence of Qur’anic expression. This research aims to analyze al-Samarra’i’s concept of hadhf and to identify its methodological implications for linguistic Qur’anic exegesis. A qualitative descriptive-analytical method with a library research approach was employed through an examination of al-Samarra’i’s major works, supported by classical Arabic rhetorical literature and contemporary studies on linguistic exegesis. The findings reveal that al-Samarra’i considers hadhf an essential aspect of the Qur’an’s rhetorical beauty (bayani), whose interpretation must be based on textual context (siyaq), rhetorical coherence, and communicative purpose rather than on speculative interpretation. Furthermore, this study systematizes three methodological principles underlying al-Samarra’i’s approach, namely contextuality, rhetorical coherence, and the rejection of forced interpretation. These principles contribute to the development of linguistic Qur’anic exegesis by integrating Arabic grammar, rhetoric, and contextual analysis in interpreting omitted elements of the Qur’anic text.

Abstract

The transition from a home environment to a boarding school environment requires new students to adapt to various aspects of life, ranging from strict rules and limited social interaction with family to a busy daily routine. This adaptation process presents a unique, multidimensional challenge that requires systematic intervention from mentors. This study aims to explain the methods used by mentors to provide guidance on adjustment for new students at the Yuhana Four Dalle Islamic Boarding School in Manuju Subdistrict, Gowa Regency. The research design is descriptive qualitative, employing approaches from da’wah, communication, and psychology. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving mentors and students. The data analysis technique adopted the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the methods used by instructors to guide new students in adjusting to their new environment include: (1) building communication through “sharing time,” (2) individual counseling, (3) habit formation and extracurricular activities, (4) setting a good example (uswatun hasanah), (5) providing advice, and (6) administering discipline or tazkirah. These six methods are applied in an integrated manner while upholding religious values, and are carried out from when students wake up until they go back to sleep. This study offers a novel perspective by exploring the mentor's role as a key figure in students’ daily lives, rather than merely as a formal counselor. The practical implications of this study are that it contributes to the development of a more effective and contextually appropriate guidance model aligned with the characteristics of traditional Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

The growing volume of audiovisual content has made documentary subtitling a demanding form of translation. Among the terms that require particular attention are political and military expressions, which often carry ideological, cultural, and historical associations. This study examines how political, military, and combined political-military terms are translated in the Indonesian subtitles of Joe Hattab’s Arabic documentary al-Maḥallīyah al-Sūrīyah, using Molina and Albir’s taxonomy of translation techniques. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis. Nineteen specialized terms were taken from the 16-minute, 10-second documentary through repeated viewing and coding, before being classified according to the framework. The results show a clear pattern: established equivalent was the most frequently used technique (8 of 19, 42.1%), followed by literal translation (7 of 19, 36.8%), borrowing, and modulation (2 of 19 each, 10.5%). The selection of techniques was largely shaped by contextual considerations and the need for clarity in the Indonesian subtitles. The findings highlight the relevance of cultural awareness and a functional view of equivalence when rendering sensitive political-military terminology in subtitles, offering a practical reference for audiovisual translators and translator-training programmes.
