Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is an important food crop in Indonesia with high potential to support food diversification, improve nutrition, and develop functional food products. The purple-fleshed variety (Ayamurasaki) is used as the female parent in breeding programs due to its high anthocyanin content. This study aimed to analyze the vegetative morphological characteristics, yield potential, and chemical composition of open-pollinated sweet potato lines using Ayamurasaki as the female parent. This study was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of five lines, namely A19, A23, A39, A74, A84, and the Ayamurasaki variety as a control, with three replications. Observations were made on vegetative morphological parameters, tuber weight per plant, and chemical composition analysis. The results showed significant variations among the tested genotypes for all observed parameters. The A23 line showed superior performance, characterized by larger leaf size, larger stem diameter, high yield, and the highest anthocyanin content. Meanwhile, the A84 line showed potential for industrial use due to its relatively high carbohydrate and starch content. These findings provide valuable information for the further development of superior sweet potato lines with high productivity and better nutritional value to support future breeding programs.

Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the alternative commodities in food diversification. Apart from being a source of carbohydrates, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes contain lots of beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A) and antioxidants that contribute greatly to health. Efforts to improve the quality of orange sweet potatoes in quantity and quality are still very much needed, one of which is by crossing. The study aimed to obtain high-yielding orange-fleshed sweet potato lines from free crosses between female parent Beta-2 and male parent local sweet potato Lampung (LPG-01, LPG-03, LPG-06, LPG-11), Cilembu, Ayamurasaki. The method used in this selection is a single planting selection method by looking at the morphological characters of each line. Single planting selection is the initial selection after successful crossing. The results showed that of the 79 lines that were crossed by a female parent of Beta-2, there were 19 lines with orange flesh and high yields, namely Beta2 OP1, Beta2 OP3, Beta2 OP4, Beta2 OP6, Beta2 OP8, Beta2 OP19, Beta2 OP25, Beta2 OP30, Beta2 OP33, Beta2 OP34, Beta2 OP36, Beta2 OP38, Beta2 OP42, Beta2 OP43, Beta2 OP54, Beta2 OP58, Beta2 OP63, Beta2 OP73, Beta2 OP77

Abstract

Efforts to maintain rice production in the future face many challenges, including the availability of increasingly narrow land, attacks by plant pest organisms, and declining land fertility due to improper cultivation systems. More than 70% of rice fields are in a disturbed ecological status due to cultivation technology that could be more environmentally friendly, which can interfere with the sustainability of rice self-sufficiency. An environmentally friendly rice cultivation system needs to be developed. This study aims to measure the agronomic and physiological responses of 3 rice genotypes in sustainable cultivation systems. The experiment used a Group Random Design on 3 rice genotypes (black, red, and white) in both conventional and sustainable cultivation systems. The research was carried out in the experimental garden of Polinela Organic Farm, Lampung State Polytechnic, from September 2020 to September 2021. The results showed that the plant, leaf greenery, number of tillers, number of panicles, grain weight per panicle, and biomass weight were not significantly different between conventional and sustainable cultivation. At the same time, the harvest and production indices per hectare were significantly different. The physiological responses to the photosynthesis and transpiration rates differed markedly in conventional and continuous cultivation. In contrast, the conductance of stomata did not differ significantly in both cultivation systems. The red rice genotype is the best, and it has a broader adaptation to conventional and sustainable cultivation systems. Keywords: agronomy, conventional sysem, physiology, rice genotype, sustainable system

Abstract

Dewi R, Utomo SD, Kamal M, Timotiwu PB, Nurdjanah S. 2019. Genetic and phenotypic diversity, heritability, and correlation between the quantitative characters on 30 sweet potato germplasms in Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 380-386. Local food commodities such as sweet potato is an alternative rice substitute food which has high nutritional content. Estimating the value of genetic diversity, heritability and correlation between quantitative characters with the weight of large storage root per plant, is needed in the selection program for the development of quality sweet potato varieties. The purpose of this study was to find out information about genetic diversity, heritability, and correlation between quantitative characters with the weight of large storage root in 30 local Lampung sweet potato germplasm, introduction and national superior genotypes. The study was carried out in the Politeknik Negeri Lampung experimental garden from September 2017 to January 2018. Using 30 genotypes of sweet potato germplasm. The study was arranged in a randomized block design (RBD) with two replications. The results showed that all characters (weight of large storage root, number of large storage root, storage root length, storage root diameter, vines length, segment length, vines diameter, and weight of vines) had a value of genetic diversity, whereas wide phenotypic diversity and has a high value of heritability. Genetic factors more influence all characters in this study compared to environmental factors. The results of the correlation analysis showed that the characters of the weight of large storage root, storage root length, and storage root diameter were positively correlated with the weight of the storage root. Whereas, the length of vines is negatively correlated with the weight of large storage. The character of the segment length, vines diameter and weight of vines did not correlate with the weight of large storage root. The character of the segment length, vines diameter and weight of vines did not correlate with the weight of large storage root. Cluster analysis results from 30 sweet potato genotypes were grouped into 13 clusters. Based on similarity of character and provenance. The germplasm of 30 Sweet potato genotypes found in Politeknik Negeri Lampung can be selected and crossed to create the desired superior characters.

Abstract

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith) is a major invasive pest that threatens maize production in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of nanoemulsions of citronella and garlic essential oils, both individually and in combinations at ratios of 1:1, 2:1, and 1:2, against third-instar larvae of S. frugiperda. The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation and formulated into nanoemulsions using Tween 80. Toxicity was assessed via contact assays and analyzed with POLO-PC software to determine LC50 and LC95 values. The citronella–garlic ratio of 2:1 was the most promising, yielding the lowest LC50 (0.1 % at 96 hours) and consistently exhibiting strong synergistic effects at the LC50 level compared with the 1:1 and 1:2 ratios, which more frequently showed additive or antagonistic interactions. The citronella nanoemulsion displayed the smallest particle size (97.8 nm) but the highest polydispersity index (PI) (0.406), indicating lower physical stability. In contrast, the garlic nanoemulsion exhibited a particle size of 185.9 nm with a PI of 0.270, reflecting a more stable system. The citronella–garlic combination at a 2:1 ratio produced the largest particle size (204.9 nm) but the lowest PI (0.239), suggesting superior stability and a more uniform particle distribution. These findings support the potential of nanoemulsified essential oils as eco-friendly botanical insecticides.

Abstract

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a functional food commodity that has the potential to support food diversification because it has a high content of beta-carotene as a provitamin A and a natural antioxidant. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological character, yieldability, and content of beta-carotene, dry matter, and sugar content in orange fleshy sweet potato clones assembled by female broodstock Beta-2. The study used a single-factor Group Random Design (RAK) with six clones, namely BOP 36, BOP 42, BOP 73, BOP 77, Beta-2, and Sari, which was repeated four times so that 24 experimental units were obtained. The data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by a BNT test of 5%. The results showed that there were significant differences in morphological characteristics, productivity, beta-carotene content, dry matter, and sugar content between clones. The BOP 73 clone produced the highest productivity with an average tuber weight of 234.37 g/plant, followed by BOP 36 of 205.87 g/plant. The two clones also have a higher content of beta-carotene, dry matter, and sugar content than the Beta-2 and Sari comparison clones. The BOP 36 clone which has a deep orange tuber has the potential to be developed as a new superior clone that supports food diversification, improving the quality of community nutrition, and strengthening food security through the provision of productive and provitamin A-rich local food.

Abstract

Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.) with orange flesh are a leading crop with the potential to serve as both a source of carbohydrates and a functional food due to their high beta-carotene content. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of sweet potato clones developed from the female parent Beta-2. The study was conducted from November 2025 to March 2026 on agricultural land located in the village of Bawang Sakti Jaya, Banjar Baru Subdistrict, Tulang Bawang Regency, Lampung Province, using a one-factor randomized block design (RBD) with six clones: BOP 36, BOP 42, BOP 73, BOP 77, Beta-2, and one control clone, namely the National Superior Variety (Sari). Each treatment was replicated four times, resulting in a total of 24 experimental units. The observed parameters were vine length, stem diameter, internode length, cluster weight, leaf length, leaf width, and petiole length. The obtained data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post-hoc tests (BNT) at the 5% significance level. The results of this study showed that BOP 36 and BOP 77 exhibited dominant quantitative traits that surpassed those of the female parent Beta-2. The study provides a crucial foundation for selecting high yielding, orange fleshed sweet potato clones with optimal bioactive content.
