Abstract

Teeth are known as organs made up of the hardest mineral tissue that is resistant to decay and physical, thermal, mechanical, chemical or biological damage. Tooth crown dimensions are reasonably accurate predictors of genders especially to young individuals whose secondary skeletal characteristics are yet developed. This research aims to analyse the influence of genders to the width of maxillary central incisor Minangkabaunese. The study was conducted using cross-sectional method in Luhak Agam, Luhak Tanah Datar and Luhak Lima Puluh Kota, West Sumatra using simple random sampling technique to a total of 120 samples. Teeth width was measured in mesiodistal dimension with 0.01 mm calibrated sliding digital caliper. The measurement was done on a tooth mould at ⅓ incisal as the position of mesial and biggest distar. T-test independent statistic test was done to determine the relationship between the 2 variables. Sexual dimorphism was determined with Garn formula. The research shows significant difference (p=0.001) between the width of left and right central incisor in males and females. The average width of the male and female right maxillary incisor is 8.545 mm and 8.370 mm, while the left central incisor width is 8.877 mm in male and 8.283 mm in females. Sexual dimorphism on the right central incisor is 2.09% and 3.43% on the left side. The conclusion of the study is that maxillary central incisor width can distinguish different genders in the identification process.

Abstract

AbstrakKaries gigi dan penyakit periodontal dapat dicegah dengan mengontrol pembentukan plak secara teratur. Penggunaan pasta gigi herbal dapat memberikan efek kimia untuk mengontrol pembentukan plak. Studi terdahulu mendapatkan bahwa pasta gigi herbal dapat mengurangi jumlah bakteri utama pada rongga mulut yaitu Streptococcus mutans. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti perbedaan daya hambat beberapa pasta gigi herbal (mengandung siwak, cengkeh, dan daun sirih) terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans. Metode penelitian adalah eksperimental dengan meletakkan cakram yang sudah direndam dengan pasta gigi ke medium agar darah yang mengandung koloni Streptococcus mutans. Uji daya hambat bakteri dilakukan dengan metode difusi. Terbentuknya zona bening di sekitar koloni bakteri menunjukkan adanya penghambatan pertumbuhan bakteri uji. Hasil uji satu arah ANOVA menunjukkan adanya perbedaan daya hambat yang bermakna antar pasta gigi herbal yang digunakan (p<0.05). Ketiga pasta gigi didapakan memiliki kemampuan antibakteri kuat dengan rata-rata zona hambat 16.075 mm, 13.375 mm dan 11.080 mm. Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa pasta gigi herbal mempunyai efek anti bakteri terhadap pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans dengan efek anti bakteri terkuat di tunjukkan oleh pasta gigi mengandung cengkeh.AbstractDental caries and periodontal disease can be eliminated by regularly control plaque formation. The usage of herbal toothpaste is able to give chemical effect toward plaque control. Previous studies shown that the usage of herbal toothpaste was able to reduce the growth of Streptococcus mutans, the main bacteria in the mouth. The study aimed at investigating the difference of zone of inhibition of several herbal toothpastes (siwak- , cloves- , and betel leaves- contained) toward the growth of Streptococcus mutans.This study was experimental research using disc that had been immersed and subsequently put it onto Blood agar medium that contain Streptococcus mutans. Inhibition test of the growth of bacteria was done by using diffusion method and was said as positif result when clear zone surrounding the colony of Streptococcus mutans was identified. One way ANOVA test result showed there was a significant difference of inhibition effect among those three herbal toothpaste (p<0.05). The average diameter of zone of inhibition of clove- , siwak- , and betel leaves-containing toothpaste were 16.075 mm, 13.375 mm and 11.080 mm respectively. Hence, it can be concluded that herbal toothpaste has shown anti-bacterial effect toward the growth of Streptococcus mutans in which the strongest anti-bacterial effect were shown by clove-containing toothpaste.

Abstract

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the soft tissues inoral cavity that invade the free gingival. There are two kinds of etiologies that can cause gingivitis, they are plaque and non-plaque. Pregnant women will have some maternal physiological changes during pregnancy, one of them is the increasing of estrogen and progesterone. It will cause the gingival tissue to react to irritant such as plaque excessively. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between gestational age and gingival index in pregnant women. This analytic correlation research used cross sectional approach. The gestational age were observed from Mom’s and Kid’s Health Book. The Gingival Index was observed by using Loe and Silness index to each pregnant woman’s oral cavity. Data was analysed by using Chi –square. The study took place in Andalas Public Health Center, from 16th February 2-15 until 26th February 2015. Most of the pregnant women had mild gingivitis, no pregnant women were found with healthy gingiva or severe gingivitis. The result showed that there was no significantly relationship between gestational age and gingival index in pregnant women (p>0,005).

Abstract

Malocclussion is one of the most common case in oral health and taking of third position after dental caries and periodontal disease. Malocclusion is a deviation form from normal occlussion. Malocclussion may caused problems in oral function, psychosocial problems and oral health problem, one of them is caries. Many of malocclusion character associated with severity of caries. The aim of this study was to know the association between severity of malocclussion with caries among adolescents students in SMKN 3 Pariaman. This study use observasional analytics with cross sectional approach. Sample were adolescents (16-19 years old) in SMKN 3 Pariaman.The sample were 75 students consisting of 15 students in each of grade complexity of malocclusion. The severity of malocclusion were identification based ICON (Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need) and caries was assess use DMF-T Index. The data were analyzed by Kruskal Walis test and Mann-Whitney test. Mean DMF-T students of SMKN 3 Pariaman was 3,00±1,716 (medium category). DMF-T indeks of malocclusion Easy was 1,466±1,407 (low category), Mild is 1,933±1,222 (low category), Moderate was 3,133±1,125 (medium category), Difficult was 4,066±1, (medium category), and Very Difficult was 4,400±1,298 (medium category). Mean of DMF-T indeks increased with increasing ICON of malocclusion. Statistical test result obtained by the p-value (p<0,05). There were association between severity of malocclussion with caries among adolescents students in SMKN 3 Pariaman. Key words : malocclussion, ICON, caries, DMF-T index

Abstract

Dental plaque plays main important role in cause of caries and periodontal disease. The one of control is to chewing gum containing xylitol. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of chewing gum containing xylitol in reducing the plaque index scores in smoker. The method of this study was quasi experiment with pretest-posttest design involved smoker sample total 35 people. Examination plaque index score was conducted over 2 days using PHP-M plaque index. Data analysis is conducted using Paired t-test. Average plaque index prior to chewing gum containing xylitol is 37,9714±8,62106 and average plaque index after to chewing gum containing xylitol is15,2000±4,96340. After chewing, it shows that mean percentage plaque index prior and after is 22,77143±9,49330 with p<0,05. So, chewing gum containing xylitol are equally effective reducing the plaque index scores in smoker. Keywords : Chewing gum containing xylitol, plaque index, smoker.

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis are one of teeth and mouth disease with prevalence is 50% of adult. Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition that cause damage to connective tissue and alveolar bone. Porphyromonas ginggivalis is one of anaerob gram-negative bacteria that cause periodontitis, these bacteria can withstand host’s defenses mechanism by utilizing a virulence factor panel that cause derived innate immune and inflamatory responses. Apple Manalagi or known as apple Malang is one of the herbal plants in Indonesia. Some studies represented inhibitory effect for bacteria from its substance. Objective: The objective of this study were to determine inhibitory effect of apple manalagi (Malus sylvestris) for Porphyromonas ginggivalis. Method: Experimental laboratory. In this study Apple Manalagi will be Juiced, Juice Apple Manalagi will divide by 4 concentrate 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. This study use diluusion method, juice apple Manalagi will aplicated to 5 samples agar MHA for 5 times. The inhibitory effect will calculated with sliding calipers, and then data will process with one way anova. Result: The result didn’t show any inhibision zone in MHA to Porphyromonas ginggivalis so data analysis cann’t be done. Conclusion: Apple Manalagi doesn’t have inhibitory effect for Porphyromonas ginggivalis.

Abstract

Candida albicans merupakan jamur flora normal bersifat opportunistik didalam rongga mulut yang dapat menyebabkan terjadinya denture stomatitispada daerah rongga mulut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menetapkan potensi hambat ekstrak daun jarak pagar terhadap pertumbuhan Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) pada permukaan akrilik. Desain penelitian eksperimental laboratorium dengan  Post test only with control group. Sampel  20 buah pelat resin akrilik heat cured yang dikontaminasikan dengan suspensi Candida albicans (0.5X108 cfu/ mL) dan diinkubasi secara aerob, selama 24 jam. Sampel  dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok dan direndam selama 8 jam dalam ekstrak daun jarak pagar konsentrasi 10% (G1), 15% (G2), 20% (G3) dan akuades (G4).  Ekstrak daun jarak pagar dibuat secara maserasi dengan etanol 96%. Koloni  masing-masing sampel dihitung dengan  Tally counter. Data dianalisis dengan  One Way Anova (p0,05).  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jumlah koloni Candida albicans terkecil ditemukan pada kelompok konsentrasi 20% dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Hasil analisa One Way Anova menunjukkan adanya perbedaan jumlah koloni Candida albicans antar kelompok (p0.05). Hasil Uji Least Significance Different terdapat perbedaan bermakna antara kelompok kontrol dengan kelompok konsentrasi 15%, dan 20% (p0.05).
