The Strategy To Translate Metaphor Yunita Widiyantari

Metaphor is called as part of comparison figure of speech. It compares two thing implisitly without using any comparison words such as, like, resemble to, etc. As a figurative expression, metaphor requires a special treatment to translate. The ability of the translator is very much influence to the result of metaphorical translation. He is not only have to empower himself with both source and target languages but also he better has a deep cultural understanding especially about metaphor. There are four types of metaphor on Ullmann version (1972: 213 - 216), namely: Antropomorfis etmaphor, animal metaphor, the abstract to concrete transfer and vise versa, sinaestetic metaphor. Furthermore, there are three criteria that should be fulfilled to value the quality of a translation viz the accuracy, the acceptability, and the text readability.Keywords: Translation; Strategy; Metaphor

The research focuses on the translation of proper names in the novel entitled Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of Four. The objectives of this research are to obtain the kinds of proper names, the way they are translated into Indonesian, and the impacts of the translation techniques on the quality of translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with single embedded-case study. To collect the data, the researcher applied purposive sampling technique. The primary data were obtained by using content analysis and the secondary data were obtained through questionnaires. In content analysis, the researcher collected the data by listing and classifying proper names found in the novel and its translation. The researcher found 239 data in the novel.This research finding shows that the kinds of proper names found are 66 personal names (consists of 48 gender specific names, 2 real person names, 11 nicknames and titles, 2 relationship noun, 1 title used without name and 2 pet names), 104 geographical terms (consisting of 97 names of continents, islands, countries, states, cities, towns, mountain and rivers and 7 names of institutions and departments), 46 names for things (consists of 19 names of nationality and tribe, 6 names of community, 7 religious names, 6 names of dates and 8 names of art works and literatures), 23 other names (unidentified names). Those are translated into Indonesian by using 7 techniques of translation: copy, rendition, transcription, calque, deletion, addition, substitution. Besides that, the translator also applies the combination technique of those single techniques into 6 combinations. From the 239 data of proper names, 233 data (97.48%) are accurate, a datum (0.41%) is less accurate, and 5 data (2.09%) are inaccurate. Meanwhile, from the acceptability level, there are 214 data (89.52%) are acceptable translation, three data (1.25%) are less acceptable, and 22 data (9.20%) are unacceptable.

The purpose of this research is to find out the comparison of translation quality produced at online translation of Google Translate, SDL Free Translation and Tradukka. In consequence with the existence of this research, is expected to give positive contribution to the users of online translation services in particular and translation researchers generally in providing information about the quality of translation produced. Google Translate, SDL Free Translation and Tradukka both have pages that are quite simple but have different levels of translation quality. Thus research is to compare between Google Translate as one of the sites that often opened and produced translation quality more accurate, acceptable and has a high level of readability with two other sites. In addition, there is still much doubt about the quality of a translation machine in producing translations of quality.

Literature and linguistics stand oppositely. They almost cannot be related, but nowadays Linguistics and Literature can stand in one field of study called Stylistics. From stylistics, literature can be interpreted in linguistic ways and otherwise. This research aims to know the influences of foreground features in the interpretation of modern poems written by Lang Leav (Clocks, Dear Love, and Patience) and analyze the properties of particular linguistic construction metaphors in the three poems. This research is descriptive qualitative research because it analyzed the foreground features, classified the metaphor structure, and described the interpretation of all foreground and metaphors found in the three poems. The source of data for this research is the poems entitled Clocks, Dear Love, and Patience. Meanwhile, the data is all clauses from the selected poems. This research applied total sampling as a technique of sampling data because the population of the sample is less than 100 data.The results found in this research are the foreground features affect the interpretation and could lead to a new perspective that cannot be reached by Literary Criticism and the mapped metaphor in the poems leads to a different perspective from where it first appeared.

Dubbing makes the audience understand the storyline of a film more easily. The moral, cultural, and meaningful messages that the film wants to convey can be expressed and absorbed well by the audience. The study aims to observe the types of change from expressive speech acts in English to those in Indonesian. Apart from that, another aim is to assess the level of translation quality, especially regarding the acceptability of the translation of expressive speech acts in the animated film The Toy Maker and His Daughter. The data collection method is carried out by watching films and translations, identifying expressive speech act data, classifying them into types of speech, and assessing the quality of the level of acceptance of the meaning of the expressive speech. The research revealed eight types of expressive speech acts in this film, namely praising, thanking, insulting, complaining, congratulating, regretting, pitying, and blaming. The most data was praised namely 14 data. In terms of translation acceptability level, 89.58% of the data obtained a score of three. This means that the translation is considered to feel natural. The terms are commonly used and familiar to Indonesian viewers.

This study aims for (1) analyzing the kinds of category shifts found in the movie of The Adventure of Tintin “The Secret of Unicorn” into Indonesian Subtitle, (2) explaining the dominant category, and (3) describing the influences of those category shifts on transferring the messages of the source language. The data in this research were all of the sentences spoken by the actors in The Adventure of Tintin “The Secret of Unicorn“ movie, whose translations (subtitles) contain any type of category shifts This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The process of collecting data is by taking all data that are suitable to the criteria and supported the research. There are four types of category shifts occured in the subtitling text of the The Adventure of Tintin “The Secret of Unicorn” movie. They are structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. The structure shift has the highest frequency, that is 289 cases or about 50.7 %. The occurrence of category shift in this movie can make the translation’s result more natural, accurate, and communicative.

This study investigates how Grammarly, an automated writing feedback tool, supports the development of learner autonomy in grammar correction among EFL students; uncovers students’ perceptions of Grammarly’s role in grammar correction, their self-perceived responsibility in revision, and the challenges they face in becoming autonomous writers. This qualitative case study research involved ten students from the English Education Program at UIN Walisongo Semarang, representing both fifth and seventh semesters. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis of student writing samples. The findings reveal that Grammarly contributes to learner autonomy by providing real-time, non-judgmental feedback that encourages revision and raises grammatical awareness. Students demonstrated increasing responsibility for their learning by combining Grammarly feedback with self-editing and peer consultation. However, challenges such as tool over-reliance, limited grammar knowledge, and emotional barriers were also evident. The study concludes that while Grammarly has significant potential to support grammar learning autonomy, its effectiveness depends on students’ critical engagement and reflective use. Pedagogical guidance is needed to help learners maximize the tool’s benefits and avoid passive dependence
