Abstract

This study aims to examine how the integration of local wisdom into the Islamic education curriculum can strengthen religious moderation in school settings. Using a qualitative approach with a socio-cultural perspective, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, document analysis, and focus group discussions involving teachers, school leaders, and students. The findings show that religious moderation can be effectively strengthened when local wisdom is systematically integrated into curriculum content, learning practices, school culture, and institutional policies. Cultural traditions, community values, and local religious practices function as contextual learning resources that help students understand moderation as a lived experience rather than an abstract concept. Teacher role modeling, dialogical learning, and habituation through daily activities also play a significant role in shaping tolerant and balanced attitudes. The study contributed a local wisdom–based model consisting of curriculum integration, teacher example, school culture, and institutional support as key components for strengthening religious moderation in Islamic education.

Abstract

Despite growing interest in English-language education in faith-based institutions, limited attention has been given to how language policy and strategic leadership shape communicative competence in religious educational settings. This study investigates the strategic management of English language programs in an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Indonesia, focusing on the integration of language policy, institutional leadership, and Islamic values in developing students’ communicative competence. Employing a qualitative single-case study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis involving 15 participants, including institutional leaders, teachers, language coordinators, and students. The findings reveal that English language programs are strategically managed through value-based language policy, leadership alignment, environmental language regulation, and Islamic moral education. English is positioned not merely as an instructional subject but as an identity-compatible communicative practice embedded within the institution’s religious mission and daily social life. Institutional leaders play a central role in sustaining communicative practices through policy reinforcement, symbolic participation, and structured language environments extending beyond classroom instruction. The study contributes to language policy and communicative competence scholarship through the concept of value-based strategic language management, demonstrating that communicative competence in faith-based educational settings is socially and ideologically mediated rather than culturally neutral. The findings also provide insights for educational leaders seeking to balance global communicative demands with institutional religious identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the instructional strategies used in teaching fiqh mawarits (Islamic inheritance law) at Maktab Nubdzat al-Bayan (Maktuba), a pesantren-based institution within the Syafi‘i tradition. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, collecting data through observations, analysis of primary teaching texts (Nadhm al-Rahbiyah and Khulashat al-Kalam), and documentation of assessment procedures. The findings reveal that Maktuba's curriculum is systematically structured based on classical texts, covering topics such as heir classification, computational methods, and exceptional cases. Pedagogically, Maktuba combines traditional pesantren methods (sorogan, bandongan, memorization, musyawarah, and i‘lan) with contemporary instructional theories like scaffolding, explicit instruction, and cognitive load management. Additionally, its evaluation system includes written and oral exams, memorization assessments, and performative i‘lan, measuring cognitive, procedural, and communicative competencies. This study highlights that the pedagogical model at Maktuba integrates classical Islamic scholarship with modern educational methods, demonstrating that pesantren-based teaching can maintain epistemic rigor while adapting to contemporary needs in Islamic legal education.
