Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of mandor (foreman) in recruiting contract workers at the oil palm plantation of PT. Bumi Pratama Khatulistiwa (BPK). They have a strategic role in the recruitment process so their presence is very important. For residents living surrounding the plantation, their opportunity to work in the company lies in the hands of the foreman. This research applied a descriptive analytic qualitative method. Informants for this research are foremen, contract workers, and local community leaders at PT. Bumi Pratama Khatulistiwa. The data were collected through observations and interviews. The study found that (1) palm oil plantations, especially PT. Bumi Pratama Khatulistiwa, has opened up quite broad opportunities for employment opportunities and has become a solution to economic problems for residents living surrounding the plantation; (2) foremen have power in recruiting workers through their access and network to workers; (3) contract workers or casual workers need cultural, social, economic and social capital, as well as symbolic capital with foremans and use each of those different capital in order to get a job in the palm oil plantation. The social capital and symbolic access at PT. BPK are the most influential factors in recruitment by foremen.

Abstract

Background: Traditional medicine is a form of treatment that has been culturally tested for hundreds of years globally to provide good health for the community, which is an essential business in the form of creative efforts made by the community to achieve good for the health of by preserving the archipelago's herbal plants. Objective: To fully describe the efforts made by the Sundanese people as a creative endeavor to develop traditional herbal medicine, especially in improving public health in the Cimenyan area, West Java. Methods: The method used is a qualitative method by conducting interviews and observing the community in the Cimenyan District, West Java. Results: Creative efforts made by the community in institutions and efforts made by the community in the Cimenyan District Area, West Java in carrying out maintenance of herbal medicines that exist in the community, which provide an essential meaning for health so that people are healthy and also obtain essential health for the low-income communities and provide usefulness for the community concerned with a fit body by eating herbal medicinal plants. Latar belakang: Pengobatan tradisional merupakan sebuah bentuk pengobatan yang telah teruji secara budaya selama ratusan tahun, dalam rangka memberikan kesehatan yang baik bagi masyarakat, yang merupakan sebuah usaha yang sangat penting dalam bentuk usaha kreatif yang dilakukan masyarakat untuk mencapai kebaikan bagi kesehatan masyarakat yang ada dengan melakukan pelestarian tanaman herbal nusantara. Tujuan: Untuk menggambarkan secara utuh mengenai bagaimana usaha yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Sunda sebagai sebuah usaha kreatif dalam rangka membangun pengobatan tradisional herbal, khususnya dalam meningkatkan kesehatan masyarakat di daerah Cimenyan, Jawa Barat. Metode: Metode yang dilakukan adalah metode kualitatif dengan melakukan wawancara dan juga dengan melakukan observasi kepada masyarakat yang dilakukan di daerah Kecamatan Cimenyan, Jawa Barat. Hasil: Usaha kreatif yang dilakukan masyarakat dalam lembaga-lembaga dan usaha-usaha yang dilakukan masyarakat di Kawasan Kecamatan Cimenyan, Jawa Barat dalam melakukan pemeliharaan terhadap obat-obat herbal yang ada di dalam masyarakat, yang memberikan arti yang penting bagi kesehatan sehingga masyarakat sehat dan juga diperolehnya kesehatan yang hakiki bagi masyarakat dan memberikan daya guna bagi masyarakat yang bersangkutan dengan tubuh yang bugar dengan makan tanaman obat herbal.

Abstract

This study examines the knowledge that is understood by generation Z in Kelurahan Pondok Karya, Kecamatan Pondok Aren, South Tangerang City. This is something interesting because masuk angin, a disease with a folk-natural thinking concept and doesn't exist in modern medical science, actually can still be felt by generation Z whose stereotype is a generation that grew up with the internet and technology, making this urban settled generation more exposed to more information than previous generations. This study aims to find out how the knowledge of urban communities, especially Generation Z, regarding masuk angin. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and literature studies. Interviews and field observations to determine the characteristics of informants were carried out in Pondok Jaya Bintaro housing. In-depth interviews were conducted with six youth IRPJ members who belong to the z generation at Perumahan Pondok Jaya Bintaro. The results of this study show an overview of Generation Z's knowledge about masuk angin including definitions, sources of knowledge, and ways to prevent and treat colds. The results of the study concluded that generation Z in Perumahan Pondok Jaya Bintaro saw masuk angin as a term to describe one or more early symptoms of various diseases.Abstrak: Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang pengetahuan yang dipahami oleh generasi Z di Kelurahan Pondok Karya, Kecamatan Pondok Aren, Kota Tangerang Selatan. Hal ini menjadi sesuatu yang menarik karena masuk angin, suatu penyakit yang konsepnya merupakan sebuah folknatural thinking dan tidak ada dalam ilmu medis modern, ternyata tetap dapat dirasakan oleh generasi Z yang stereotipnya adalah suatu generasi yang tumbuh bersama internet dan teknologi, menjadikan generasi ini lebih terpapar banyak informasi daripada generasi-generasi sebelumnya. Terlebih lagi, lokasi tempat tinggal yang berada di wilayah perkotaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengetahuan masyarakat perkotaan khususnya generasi Z mengenai masuk angin. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi, wawancara dan studi literatur.  Wawancara dan observasi lapangan untuk mengetahui karakteristik informan dilakukan di perumahan pondok jaya Bintaro. Wawancara mendalam dilakukan pada enam remaja anggota IRPJ yang termasuk dalam generasi z di perumahan pondok jaya Bintaro. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan gambaran pengetahuan generasi Z mengenai masuk angin termasuk definisi, sumber pengetahuan berasal, serta cara-cara pencegahan dan pengobatan masuk angin. Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa generasi Z di perumahan pondok jaya melihat masuk angin sebagai suatu istilah untuk menggambarkan satu atau lebih gejala awal dari berbagai penyakit.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and has a strong stigma, but a group of women in East Kutai Regency, have decided to become TB cadres for dozens of years. The TB Cadre's actions are not only to provide counseling to various groups of people, but they also conduct contact investigations and accompany patients until they recover. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnography method by first conducting a census of 67 TB cadres. After that, conducting participatory observations in the field and in-depth interviews with several TB cadres to TB patients. This study aims to 1) Find out the formation of TB cadres in East Kutai, 2) See the socio-cultural aspects that play a role in the formation of the meaning of women becoming TB Cadres. The results of this study, of the 67 TB Cadres, all are women, dominated by the Bugis and Javanese tribes, and most are housewives. There is a paradigm shift, that East Kutai women currently do not limit their space for action and are more freedom to contribute to the progress of government programs, especially health. The results of observations and interviews also show that there are deep meanings and reasons why women become TBC Cadres, both in terms of religion, beliefs, and family. Factors that play a role in the formation of collective action meaning consist of cultural values, symbols, personal experiences, and gender construction. The formation of meaning is also a process between individuals and groups in interpreting and giving meaning to their experiences, symbols, and cultural practices.

Abstract

The everyday lives of people living with HIV/AIDS are often filled with challenges stemming from physical, mental, and socio-cultural aspects. Among them, many are able to face these challenges, while some struggle to do so. Women living with HIV face even greater challenges due to their gender roles in society, whether as single women, mothers, wives, or daughters-in-law. This study describes the dynamic challenges faced by women living with HIV in Bandung City in their daily lives. These challenges go beyond biological aspects and include the ways they confront them. The research employs a phenomenological method, with data collected through in-depth interviews and participant observation involving women with HIV/AIDS who are either housewives or workers. The findings reveal that the everyday lives of women living with HIV/AIDS in Bandung are marked by issues related to their physical, mental, socio-cultural, and economic conditions. After being infected, their physical health often deteriorates, requiring them to adapt to these conditions to maintain their daily activities. They also experience mental pressure due to the need to hide their health status because of societal stigma. Some women fail to manage these challenges and experience stress, while others successfully cope with them. Remarkably, some women manage to empower themselves and live fulfilling lives.

Abstract

The rise of short-form video platforms, specifically Instagram Reels, has transformed social media into a crucial, highly strategic stage for individuals to perform and negotiate their identities. This study critically analyzes the self-representation and personal branding strategies employed by Fani Rahmawati, a beauty content creator, on Instagram Reels to build a public image that is both credible and emotionally relatable. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach and virtual ethnography, the research delves into the subtle symbolic, social, and performative dynamics inherent in digital identity construction. Data collection relied on participative observation of Fani's Reels content (March–April 2024) and in-depth interviews with the creator, her videographer, and an active follower. Trustworthiness was ensured through source triangulation and member-checking. Thematic analysis, informed by Goffman's impression management and Jones and Pittman's strategic self-presentation, revealed five interconnected themes: visual consistency, an intimate communication style, constructed authenticity, emotional audience engagement, and the significant role of the production team. The findings indicate that Fani successfully fosters a "friendly older sister" persona by deliberately mixing aesthetic consistency, the use of informal, engaging language (ingratiation), and the calculated disclosure of personal narratives to establish high credibility. This branding process is shown to be less about individual spontaneity and more about a collective practice negotiated among the creator, her team, and the platform’s algorithmic demands. This research contributes to digital anthropology and media studies by arguing that personal branding on visual short-video platforms is a complex social performance rooted in strategic impression management, the cultivation of parasocial relationships, and crucial production collaboration. Abstrak: Meningkatnya popularitas platform video pendek, khususnya Instagram Reels, telah menjadikan media sosial sebagai panggung strategis yang penting bagi individu untuk menampilkan dan menegosiasikan identitas mereka. Penelitian ini menganalisis secara kritis strategi representasi diri dan personal branding yang dijalankan oleh Fani Rahmawati, seorang beauty content creator, di Instagram Reels guna membentuk citra publik yang kredibel dan memiliki kedekatan emosional. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dan etnografi virtual, penelitian ini menggali dinamika simbolik, sosial, dan performatif yang tersirat dalam konstruksi identitas digital. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi partisipatif terhadap konten Reels Fani (Maret–April 2024) dan wawancara mendalam dengan tiga informan kunci: kreator, videografer, dan pengikut aktif. Keabsahan data dijamin melalui triangulasi sumber dan member-checking. Analisis tematik, yang berlandaskan pada kerangka impression management Goffman dan strategic self-presentation Jones dan Pittman, mengidentifikasi lima tema utama yang saling terkait: konsistensi visual, gaya komunikasi akrab, autentisitas terkonstruksi, keterlibatan emosional audiens, serta peran signifikan tim produksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesuksesan Fani dalam membangun persona "kakak bersahaja" bersumber dari perpaduan strategis antara konsistensi estetika, penggunaan bahasa informal yang menarik (ingratiation), dan pengungkapan narasi personal yang diperhitungkan untuk menciptakan kredibilitas tinggi. Proses branding ini membuktikan bahwa ia bukan sekadar spontanitas individu, melainkan praktik kolektif yang dinegosiasikan antara kreator, timnya, dan tuntutan algoritmik platform. Studi ini berkontribusi pada kajian antropologi digital dan studi media dengan menegaskan bahwa personal branding di platform video pendek visual merupakan performa sosial yang kompleks, didorong oleh manajemen kesan strategis, pembentukan hubungan parasosial, serta kolaborasi produksi yang krusial.
