Abstract

The author conducts discussions with the Management of the Baiturrahim Mosque Prosperity Council (DKM) regarding what media needs are needed. DKM Baiturrahim needs to make visual media to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. DKM needs attractive persuasive media, to attract residents to come to the mosque. Based on the needs of DKM Baiturrahim, the author created a Rontek Banner design that contains an invitation to come to the mosque and optimize worship in the holy month of Ramadan. At the stage of the work-making process, the author uses the Design Design Thinking method for the work-making process. Design Thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that consists of five iterative stages: empathize, define, ideate, process and test. Each stage plays an important role in developing solutions that effectively address user needs. As a result, the team created a rontek design with the topic of congregational prayer and the virtues of fasting in the month of Ramadan. The author produced 10 designs that were submitted and installed in the inner and outer areas of the mosque. Keywords: rontek banner dakwah; visual dakwah; visual media ramadhan

Abstract

This study examines how the cover design of the 2017 softcover edition of Leila S. Chudori's Laut Bercerita represents the novel's narrative of political violence, loss, and collective memory. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study applies Roland Barthes's Rhetoric of the Image, with particular attention to the linguistic message, uncoded iconic message, coded iconic message, and anchorage. The primary data consist of the front cover and its dominant verbal and visual units, while the secondary data are drawn from design studies, semiotic studies, and studies on the novel's historical-fiction context. The findings indicate that the cover constructs a tightly integrated verbal-visual system in which the title and author line frame an underwater scene dominated by chained feet, fish, coral formations, and blue tonal fields. In the discussion, these elements are interpreted as a rhetoric of suppression and remembrance, through which the sea shifts from a decorative setting to a symbolic archive of disappearance and historical trauma. The study concludes that the cover functions not only as a marketing surface but also as a visual argument that condenses the novel's humanitarian and ideological concerns.

Abstract

This study deconstructs the visual representation of 19th-century French social identity through a Peircean semiotic analysis of Claude Monet’s masterpiece, Woman with a Parasol (1875). While traditional art criticism often views the work as a spontaneous impression of light, this research reveals a deliberate semiotic construction of bourgeois femininity. Using Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model—specifically the Proposition → Indexical → Legisign framework—the study examines how visual elements such as the parasol, the white summer dress, and the low-angle perspective function as signs of social status and gender roles. The analysis finds that the painting serves as a visual claim for the 'leisure class' identity, where the female figure (Camille) is elevated both physically and psychologically as a symbol of domestic harmony and modern urbanity. By mapping the interaction between spontaneous brushstrokes (index) and rigid social conventions (legisign), this research concludes that Monet’s impressionism is not merely a formal innovation but a manifestation of the cultural ideology of the 19th-century French bourgeoisie. These findings provide critical insights for visual communication design in understanding how aesthetic choices can be used to construct and communicate complex social identities.
