Abstract

This study examine the idea of after gravity as the basis of an architectural design method. After gravity is defined as the condition of weightlessness and disorientation that creates unrestricted body movement. Gravity determines the direction of architectural spatial orientation and gives weight to subject and object in architectural space, creating boundaries of possible body movements. This paper analyzes the development of a design method based on that appropriates gravity through the analytical study of ten gravity-defying body movements such as hanging, flying, or spinning. The study identifies three gravity-based relations; happening between bodies, between body and object, and between body and space. The design method of architecture after gravity highlights the spatial experience of the moving body in receiving stimuli and responding to the context. Understanding architecture after gravity widens the potential of architecture that sees the relations of forces in a context with the body in a dynamically built environment.

Abstract

Abstract_ This article investigates unconditional architecture, which is a form of design with space and architectural elements with disordered characters that arise in an unplanned way. Engagement with the community provides potential variation in developing space and architectural elements that value non-conformity, enriching the urban space. Architecture no longer focuses on aesthetics within the final form of the design but provides maneuvering opportunities for the community to develop an adaptive urban space. This article focuses on the design method of unconditional architecture through case studies of participatory architecture in Amiriya Complex restoration, Code river development, and Puebla traditional dwellings for the community in Mexico. The analysis of these case studies demonstrates how community participation changes function and emphasize material localities that are unconditioned that generate new urban identity. Understanding the mechanism of unconditioned architecture aims to expand architectural knowledge that values architecture beyond its orderliness, and highlights possibilities of the community as the main actor in the production of everyday urban space. Keyword: Uncoditional Architecture; Non- Conformity; Paritipatoru; Urban.

Abstract

This study investigates the embodied sensorial performance in material exhibition design as a way to enhance visitors’ experience about local cultures. Exhibitions and installations designed in museum or gallery context often incorporate a sensorial approach to increase engagement and to cater specific needs of society. This study takes particular interest in expanding such discussion, highlighting how a sensorial approach can be used in a more active way to experience localities, particularly in relation with food material. The study explores such sensorial aspects through reflecting towards an exhibition event conducted by the Indonesian Architect Association Central Java titled Rumarasa, an exhibition that explores the sensorial narrative of Indonesian spices. The exhibition consists of three particular stages that activate the overall senses that construct the experience of spices in Indonesia. The first stage consists of the visual stages of the spices, displaying the form and origin of spices in an interactive way. The next stage requires the visitors to touch the spices, inviting the visitors to experience the spice using their tactile, olfactory, and auditory senses. The third stage highlights how the spice can be used as a medium of creative play, transforming the spice as colouring material with different gradients. Through these stages, the sensorial journey constructs the overall local narrative of Indonesian spices, understanding the origin, building the intimacy, and enabling transformation of material. In conclusion, this study contributes to expanding the sensory experience as an approach to design cultural exhibitions, enabling an active and deep experience of locality.

Abstract

This paper discusses the dynamic value of objects that influence the spatial organization of a home-based workspaces. Spatial organization of workspace at home becomes significant with the emerging work-from-home arrangement during and post COVID-19 pandemic. The physical and psychological needs of working from home require adaptations on the domestic setting through the use and placement of objects in relation to how humans produce and experience space. This paper examines the value mechanism of remote workers with regards to their everyday objects and how such mechanism affects the overall workspace organization them. The study explores the workspace of 3 remote workers with different activities and preferences. The study shows that the dynamic value of objects shapes the workplace arrangements, enabling better accessibility, supporting the need for comfortable and pleasant qualities of space, as well as demonstrating self-identity. The study expands discussions on the spatial adaptation driven by dynamic system of objects.

Abstract

Architecture exists in flux, shaped by the rapid social, cultural, and environmental transformation in current society. The articles in this edition of ARSNET explore various contexts and design methodologies that emerge amidst such rapid and often disruptive changes. The study discusses different conditions produced by such changes, from the inevitability of time that leads to deterioration, environmental pressures that create separation from nature, to high rates of urbanisation that led to limitation of living space and changes to users' livelihood. Discussions elaborated in this edition outline how architecture in flux may lead to alternative design approaches. These approaches range from construction practices that celebrate impermanence; design operations that value neglected, incomplete, and hidden areas; architecture that calls for reconnection with nature; to exploration of adaptive and inclusive objects and spatialities for multiplicities of users. In doing so, this edition highlights the changing processes and relationships of the built environment in the state of flux, towards architecture that continuously evolves and celebrates change.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the idea of context as the basis for developing creative workshops for children in disaster-stricken communities. We argue that creative learning should not be seen merely in terms of artistic expression and abstract thinking. Instead, it should become a platform for celebrating local contexts and cultures through the learning process. This study was based on reflecting on two creative workshop activities that were held in post-disaster schools in Cianjur, West Java. The school is part of the Sekolah Indonesia Cepat Tanggap (SICT) program—a fast-track school construction initiative for communities affected by disasters throughout Indonesia. The creative workshops were conducted to engage and familiarize students with their new school environments and build their sense of ownership of their new schools based on the idea that creative workshops for communities can be informed by the richness of local food, agriculture, local events, and experiences in context. This contextual information was embedded in the workshops, enabling the children to produce creative works that highlighted individual and collective layers of locality. The relationship between the creative media used in the workshops and the context allowed the students to produce works that freely expressed their identities, reflecting their belongingness and roles within society. The students’ work was later exhibited in the schools, enabling them to interactively engage with the school spaces. This article outlines context-based learning strategies that can be used in creative workshops to enable communities to situate and express aspects of their everyday localities.

Abstract

This paper investigates the concept of ‘passage territories’ (Sennett, 2006), as living spaces constructed from one’s passage of movement from one separate space to another, and how it extends the discussion of interiority in contested contexts. Through observations of living spaces and the narrative accounts of dwellers’ in Kampung Pulo and Manggarai neighbourhoods of Jakarta, this study draws attention to the interiority of dispersed and layered spaces occupied by the kampungs’ dwellers. In this context, passage territories are driven by a) a limitation of space that, in turn, triggers the need to acquire more space; b) the occupation of a dweller that necessitates different types of space; and c) the limited access to infrastructural resources that influence the extent of a living space’s dispersal. Through the use of drawings, this study reveals the complete interiority of living spaces consisting of spaces with diverse spatial ownerships and scales. The boundaries of passage territories tend to be defned by the frequency and length of time needed for an activity instead of the relative proximity between certain spaces. Furthermore, the way objects are placed also shapes the boundaries of passage territories, both for permanent and temporary use of space. This paper then discusses the impact of this knowledge on the interiority of passage territories, proposing to use mechanisms of ‘patches’ and ‘corridors’ to shape the interior of territory that cross, share, and change into one another.
